    Notes: The comproportionation reaction of the oxidized and reduced forms of both riboflavin and lumiflavin to form their respective radicals is studied over a range of pHs in aqueous solution and in the aprotic solvent methylene chloride. The comproportionation equilibrium constant is reported for basic solutions reduced at an amalgamated Au electrode, where adsorption does not interfere with equilibrium measurements, with both Na+ and Ca2+ as the counterion. The basic and nonaqueous solution voltammetries of riboflavin and lumiflavin are shown to be similar by measuring the radical concentration by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) during an in situ electrolysis as a function of potential. In both solvent systems the first of the two reduction waves corresponds to a two-electron reduction with the radical present formed by comproportionation.

    Notes: In spite of the fact that the first polysilane derivatives were probably prepared in the mid 1920's, there was little scientific interest until recently. The synthesis of the first soluble homo and copolymers about 10 years ago has stimulated an explosive development of this class of materials. This brief review traces the historical development of the polysilanes and focuses on recent studies of polymer structure, electronic properties, photochemical reactions and mechanisms and finally on new applications.

    Notes: The emulsion copolymerization of styrene and sodium styrene sulfonate has been shown to be a feasible preparative route to ionomeric sulfonated polystyrene. The properties of these copolymers are reported elsewhere. The copolymerization rate was found to be dramatically enhanced when compared to that for the emulsion copolymerization of styrene under identical conditions. This copolymerization was studied in detail and two mechanisms were proposed to account for these rate differences. An increase in the number of polymerizing particles in the copolymerization with consequent rate enhancement was substantiated by electron microscopy. However, the data indicate that the rate differences cannot be fully accounted for by this effect. In addition, a gel effect is proposed as a second contributor to the enhanced rate. This gel effect is believed to result from the intermolecular association of the incorporated metal sulfonate units in the growing polymer particles. When a third monomer that plasticizes the ionic interactions is used the polymerization rate decreases. This supports the gel effect hypothesis.

    Notes: Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and electron loss spectroscopy (ELS) have been performed in order to investigate a (100) InP surface subjected to argon ion bombardment at low energy. It has been found that preferential sputtering of phosphorus-impurities species during the cleaning stage results in the formation of a In0.57P0.43 disordered layer. Within the sampling depth of the In MNN Auger electrons, about 1/4 of the total In atoms are of metallic type. Our experimental results are not consistent with the formation of pure In islands over a stoichiometric InP surface. If In clusters are present in the disordered surface, they are associated with adsorbed phosphorus. Prolonged ion bombardment increases the surface roughness as detected by ELS and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

    Notes: An experimental program is described in which the capacitor-discharge initiation characteristics of a detonator containing a vacuum-deposited thin-film chromium bridge were studied. The objective of the effort was to define the conditions that would result in overall function times of 10 μs or less. The threshold initiation energy of the detonator was in the range of 11.5 mJ-20.0 mJ. Consistent performance was obtained from a firing energy of 54 mJ, which was achieved by a 5-μF capacitor charged to 147 V. Under these conditions, the average overall function time was 4.2 μs, with a standard deviation of 0.2 μs. Other tests showed that at higher capacitances and lower voltages the function time increased substantially and became more nonreproducible, even though the stored energy was considerably above the threshold value.
