Notizen: Polymandelide was prepared in 77% yield by reaction of α-bromophenylacetic acid and triethylamine. The product was characterized by 1H- and 13C-NMR and IR spectra and isolation and identification of mandelic acid from hydrolysis of the polymer. The NMR spectra indicate the presence of tacticity at CH in the polymer. Molecular weights were determined by GPC and viscosity measurements; n values of 12-20 are comparable to those reported for polymandelides prepared by other methods. The x-ray powder diffraction pattern showed the product to be completely amorphous. Thermal decomposition was studied using DSC.

Notizen: Agricultural products have considerable potential for conversion to valuable oxychemicals. Analyses by ether extraction, titration, and anion-exchange classification of the alkaline degradation products of totally converted starch and cellulosics showed that the product compounds are mainly organic acids. Almost all the organic acids are monocarboxylic in nature, with an average equivalent weight in the range 76-84. The organic acids identified thus far by HPLC and GC are formic, acetic, glycolic, lactic, 2-hydroxybutyric, 2-hydroxyisobutyric, and 2-hydroxyvaleric acids. Together, these compounds represent 41-46% of the starting material weight.

Notizen: The interaction of lithium-doped polyimide films with water has been investigated. Contact angle and water absorption/desorption measurements have been performed to obtain an idea of the hygroscopic nature of these lithium-doped films. Contact angles were found to decrease as the amount of surface lithium increased. Film water content was also found to increase as the weight percent of total lithium content in the film increased. This phenomenon has been used to rationalize the electrical resistivity-temperature profile of certain lithium films which display an increase in electrical resistivity upon drying.

Beschreibung: Two computational techniques are developed analytically to generate global approximation vectors for use in the nonlinear large-deflection analysis of symmetric structures with asymmetric boundary conditions. One method is based on linear combinations of FEM-generated symmetric and antisymmetric vector components, while the other employs a preconditioned-conjugate-gradient technique. The derivation of the procedures is explained in detail, and their effectiveness is evaluated in sample computations for an elliptic toroid and a cylindrical panel; the results are presented in tables and graphs and characterized.

Beschreibung: A simple computational procedure is presented for reducing the size of the analysis model for a symmetric structure with asymmetric boundary conditions to that of the corresponding structure with symmetric boundary conditions. The procedure is based on approximating the asymmetric response of the structure by a linear combination of symmetric and antisymmetric global approximation vectors (or modes). The key elements of the procedure are (1) restructuring the governing finite-element equations to delineate the contributions to the symmetric and antisymmetric components of the asymmetric response, (2) successive application of the finite element method and the classical Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The finite-element method is first used to generate a few global approximation vectors (or modes). Then the amplitudes of these modes are computed by using the Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The effectiveness of the computational procedure is demonstrated by means of numerical examples of linear static problems of shells, and its potential for solving nonlinear problems is discussed.

Beschreibung: The development of efficient techniques for calculating sensitivity derivatives is studied. The objective is to present a computational procedure for calculating sensitivity derivatives as part of performing structural reanalysis for large-scale problems. The scope is limited to framed type structures. Both linear static analysis and free-vibration eigenvalue problems are considered.

Beschreibung: A computational technique is developed to reduce the size of the dynamical model of a large complex quasi-symmetric structure prior to free vibration analysis. The structure is discretized using a two-field mixed FEM model; the response vectors are decomposed into symmetric and antisymmetric components; the eigenvectors of the quasi-symmetric structure are approximated by a linear combination of a few preselected sets of symmetric and antisymmetric modes generated by the reduced-size model; global approximation vectors are selected and generated; and the resulting eigenvalue problem is significantly reduced via a classical Bubnov-Galerkin procedure. Numerical results for a shallow laminated anisotropic panel of quadrilateral planform are presented in extensive tables and graphs, demonstrating the effectiveness of the method.

Beschreibung: Global-basis-vector approximate reanalysis techniques for use in automated structural optimization schemes are developed and demonstrated. The vibrational response of a modified structure (MS) is estimated by lumping the design variables into a single tracing parameter, applying an operator splitting procedure to express the FEM equations of the MS in terms of the original-structure equations plus correction terms, and reducing the MS equations via a classical Bubnov-Galerkin scheme. The sensitivity of the vibrational response to structural modifications is evaluated, and the relationship between this method and the preconditioned conjugate-gradient method (Noor and Peters, 1988) is explored. Numerical results for linear static and free vibration problems involving beamlike lattices, double-layered hexahedral grids, and structural gridworks are presented in tables and graphs and briefly characterized.
