Notizen: Summary The importance of selectivity in the capillary gas chromatographic analysis of the cellular fatty acids of micro-organisms is underestimated. The analysis on apolar silicone phases can lead to erratic elucidation of the fatty acid structure. Qualitative errors have been detected in commercially available standards on which computer matching identification techniques are based. Using highly polar capillary columns of the cyanopropyl silicone type, the errors could be elucidated. The exact identification of the hydrolysis products of bacteria is a must for chemotaxonomic studies applying chromatographic techniques. The fatty acid methyl ester profiles can also contain other chemical components which are very important taxonomic markers. Fatty aldehydes, for example, are main components in someClostridium species. Fractionation techniques are described for selective enrichment of fatty aldehydes and hydroxy fatty acids.

Notizen: The analysis of triglycerides on FSOT columns coated with a phenylmethylsilicone gum opens up new perspectives in fat and oil characterization. On phenylmethylsilicone, besides a “carbon number” or CN separation, the triglycerides are also separated according to the different combinations of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in the triglycerides.

Notizen: Narrow bore columns (100 μm) have successfully been applied in the analysis of commercial lemon oils. On these columns, high resolution is obtained in a short analysis time. Different Brazillian lemon oils are characterized qualitatively and quantitatively.

Notizen: Due to their high polarity and unique selectivity, cyanopropyl silicones are basic stationary phases for high resolution capillary gas chromatography. Different OH-terminated cyanopropyl silicones, containing a high cyanopropyl content, were synthesized and chromatographically evaluated. Special attention was paid to the degree of immobilization of the phases in FSOT columns. Depending on the problem at hand, a choice has to be made between immobilization and maximum selectivity.

Notizen: Modification of the Carlo-Erba cold on-column injector for (automated) analysis of high molecular compounds at high oven temperature is described. The secondary cooling tube of the cold on-column injector is replaced by a lengthened tube through which a high air flow is directed. The injection site is maintained at 65-70 °C while the oven is at high temperature (≷ 300 °C). For automated injection, a short deactivated precolumn of 22 to 30 cm × 0.53 mm i.d. is coupled to the analytical column via a butt connector with make-up gas supply. For a triglyceride mixture, automatically injected at 300 °C, the mean % deviation for all peak areas was 1.8% and the mean % deviation for all retention times was 0.09 % for five consecutive runs.

Beschreibung: Two computational techniques are developed analytically to generate global approximation vectors for use in the nonlinear large-deflection analysis of symmetric structures with asymmetric boundary conditions. One method is based on linear combinations of FEM-generated symmetric and antisymmetric vector components, while the other employs a preconditioned-conjugate-gradient technique. The derivation of the procedures is explained in detail, and their effectiveness is evaluated in sample computations for an elliptic toroid and a cylindrical panel; the results are presented in tables and graphs and characterized.

Beschreibung: A simple computational procedure is presented for reducing the size of the analysis model for a symmetric structure with asymmetric boundary conditions to that of the corresponding structure with symmetric boundary conditions. The procedure is based on approximating the asymmetric response of the structure by a linear combination of symmetric and antisymmetric global approximation vectors (or modes). The key elements of the procedure are (1) restructuring the governing finite-element equations to delineate the contributions to the symmetric and antisymmetric components of the asymmetric response, (2) successive application of the finite element method and the classical Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The finite-element method is first used to generate a few global approximation vectors (or modes). Then the amplitudes of these modes are computed by using the Rayleigh-Ritz technique. The effectiveness of the computational procedure is demonstrated by means of numerical examples of linear static problems of shells, and its potential for solving nonlinear problems is discussed.

Beschreibung: The development of efficient techniques for calculating sensitivity derivatives is studied. The objective is to present a computational procedure for calculating sensitivity derivatives as part of performing structural reanalysis for large-scale problems. The scope is limited to framed type structures. Both linear static analysis and free-vibration eigenvalue problems are considered.

Beschreibung: A computational technique is developed to reduce the size of the dynamical model of a large complex quasi-symmetric structure prior to free vibration analysis. The structure is discretized using a two-field mixed FEM model; the response vectors are decomposed into symmetric and antisymmetric components; the eigenvectors of the quasi-symmetric structure are approximated by a linear combination of a few preselected sets of symmetric and antisymmetric modes generated by the reduced-size model; global approximation vectors are selected and generated; and the resulting eigenvalue problem is significantly reduced via a classical Bubnov-Galerkin procedure. Numerical results for a shallow laminated anisotropic panel of quadrilateral planform are presented in extensive tables and graphs, demonstrating the effectiveness of the method.

Beschreibung: Global-basis-vector approximate reanalysis techniques for use in automated structural optimization schemes are developed and demonstrated. The vibrational response of a modified structure (MS) is estimated by lumping the design variables into a single tracing parameter, applying an operator splitting procedure to express the FEM equations of the MS in terms of the original-structure equations plus correction terms, and reducing the MS equations via a classical Bubnov-Galerkin scheme. The sensitivity of the vibrational response to structural modifications is evaluated, and the relationship between this method and the preconditioned conjugate-gradient method (Noor and Peters, 1988) is explored. Numerical results for linear static and free vibration problems involving beamlike lattices, double-layered hexahedral grids, and structural gridworks are presented in tables and graphs and briefly characterized.
