Notes: A functional has been developed for the finite element solution of diffusion - convection problems. This functional is suitable for the application of the variational principle on discretization schemes in the space - time domain. This algorithm has shown to be computationally efficient over the conventional finite element discretization in the space domain alone. Numerical examples on one-dimensional energy transport have been included to illustrate the merit of this technique.

Notes: A functional in the form of a convolution of the temperature variation in the space-time domain has been derived. It has been used as the basis for a finite element formulation of heat conduction in solids. Numerical illustrations have indicated that the space-time finite element algorithm provides a more rapid convergence to the exact solutions than the usual finite element analysis with discretization in space only.

Notes: A mixed explicit-implicit numerical integration algorithm for creep stress analysis is presented in this paper. This method allows simultaneously use of, and thus benefit from, both these integration schemes. The continuum damage constitutive model is also implemented in this algorithm. The present method is suitable for the prediction of creep crack growth in solids using the continuum damage approach.Numerical examples using different constitutive equations have been included to demonstrate the high efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Notes: Percolation and effective-medium theories are applied to model the transport and elastic properties of perfluorinated ionomers. The composite nature of these polymers is emphasized. The effective-medium theory is generalized to track continuously the evolution from lamellar to fibrillar morphology. The predicted dramatic difference in ion selectivity between lamellar and spherical morphology is verified quantitatively in perfluorinated ionomer blends. The limitations and potential improvements of the effective-medium theory and its relationship to percolation theory are discussed. Applications of these theories to other multiphase polymer systems are also discussed.

Notes: Infrared spectroscopy has been used to determine the relative amount, location, and orientation of residual water and acid molecules in poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) films. By analyzing the relative absorbance of reflected polarized infrared radiation from highly oriented films, the indices of refraction parallel and perpendicular to the chain axis were also obtained.

Notes: An adaptive grid generation technique based on modified variational principles coupled with an exponential clustering has been developed and tested successfully for the computation of steady inviscid transonic projectile aerodynamics. The isoperimetric problem for adaptive gridding is to extremize a grid smoothness functional subject to grid orthogonality and resolution functionals; however, the Lagrange multipliers have been assumed to be variables with zero variation and are properly chosen as functions of local grid size to enhance locally the grid resolution as well as to maintain the weight of three grid characteristics the same over the entire flow field. With computed pressure gradient as the control function for grid adaptation, the resulting Euler equations cannot provide sufficient grid resolution in the boundary layer region of the projectile geometry; hence, a clustering technique is needed to redistribute the points along the normal grid lines. A grid generation code has been developed and coupled to an axisymmetric thin-layer Navier-Stokes code for self-adaptive grid generation. For the three transonic flow cases considered, M∞ = 0.91, 0.96 and 1.10, the distribution of surface pressure calculated from the inviscid option of the Navier-Stokes code is indeed in excellent agreement with published measured data.

Description: In 1979, a mass poisoning occurred in Taiwan from cooking oil contaminated by thermally degraded polychlorinated biphenyls. Because these chemicals persist in human tissue, children born to female patients after the outbreak were exposed in utero. In 1985, 117 children born to affected women and 108 unexposed controls were examined and evaluated. The exposed children were shorter and lighter than controls; they had abnormalities of gingiva, skin, nails, teeth, and lungs more frequently than did controls. The exposed children showed delay of developmental milestones, deficits on formal developmental testing, and abnormalities on behavioral assessment. These findings are most consistent with a generalized disorder of ectodermal tissue. This syndrome is one of very few documented to result from transplacental exposure to pollutant chemicals.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Rogan, W J -- Gladen, B C -- Hung, K L -- Koong, S L -- Shih, L Y -- Taylor, J S -- Wu, Y C -- Yang, D -- Ragan, N B -- Hsu, C C -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1988 Jul 15;241(4863):334-6.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, Research Triangle Park, NC 27709.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3133768" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
