    Notes: Summary T-DNA circularization is one of the molecular events specifically induced in agrobacterial cells upon their infection of dicotyledonous plant cells. We developed a seedling co-cultivation procedure to determine whether or not monocotyledonous plants have the ability to induce T-DNA circularization and vir gene expression. Co-cultivation of Agrobacterium tumefaciens with seedlings of dicotyledonous plants showed that the circularization event takes place efficiently. The exudates and extracts of the seedlings also effectively induced T-DNA circularization and vir gene expression, indicating that dicotyledonous seedlings contain diffusible factors capable of inducing these molecular events. In contrast, neither T-DNA circularization nor vir gene expression was detectable when Agrobacterium was incubated with seedlings of monocotyledonous plants. Supplementing with acetosyringone, a known inducer of vir gene expression and T-DNA circularization, resulted in the induction of circularization during co-cultivation with monocotyledonous seedlings. These results indicate that the seedlings of monocotyledonous plants have no detectable amounts of diffusible inducers, unlike dicotyledonous seedlings. Therefore, it is unlikely that the vir genes are expressed in Agrobacterium inoculated in monocotyledonous plants. This may be one of the blocks in tumorigenesis of monocotyledonous plants by Agrobacterium.

    Notes: Permeation and separation characteristics of methanol/water and ethanol/water mixtures by evapomeation and pervaporation through unelongated and biaxially elongated polystyrene membranes were investigated under various conditions. All polystyrene membranes predominantly permeated water molecules in both methods. Permeation rates in the case of evapomeation were smaller than those of pervaporation, but the separation factors in the former case were greater than those in the latter. The separation factors through the biaxially elongated polystyrene membrane were larger than those of the unelongated polystyrene membrane, this value being ca. 1500 for an azeotropic mixture of ethanol/water. Permeation and separation mechanisms through these polystyrene membranes involved in both membrane separation techniques are discussed from the viewpoints of solution-diffusion of permeating molecules and of the membrane structure.

    Notes: Yeasts capable of fermenting both D-xylose and cellobiose to ethanol were screened. Of 213 species of yeasts surveyed, Kluyveromyces cellobiovorus sp. nov., a new species belonging to genus of Kluyveromyces, was selected as the sole strain. This strain accumulated 32, 22, and 19 g/L of ethanol from 8% glucose, D-xylose, and cellobiose, respectively. It was also shown that this strain produced ethanol from the enzymatic bagasse hydrolysate containing hexoses and pentoses more efficiently than Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

    Notes: Conversion distribution in particles of chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC) is conceptually described based on balance equations involving mass transfer and chemical reaction. In the physical sorption of chlorine in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) as measured by the constant volume cell method, equilibrium concentration and diffusion rate obeyed Henry's law and Fick's law. The rate process of photo chlorination of PVC, which was investigated by the gravimetric method, could be well predicted by theoretical calculation of chlorine diffusion in PVC accompanying the infinitely fast chemical reaction. In a free grain of PVC synthesized by suspension polymerization, the chlorination rate was governed by the polymer-phase diffusion within agglomerates of coalesced primary particles.To produce homogeneously chlorinated PVC, a periodic photo-irradiation method was theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The effect of the periodic operation on the thermal property of CPVC was evaluated by DSC.

    Notes: Cultured preadispose 3T3 cells are able to undergo a process of differentiation through which they are converted into adipose cells. Growth hormone induces this conversion in resting cultures but not in growing cultures. It was of interest to determine the period of cell sensitivity to the hormone and the timing of the induction of glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, a key enzyme in lipogenesis. It was found that 3T3-F442A cells became highly sensitive to rat growth hormone at confluence but that high sensitivity remained for only 3 days; thereafter, the responsiveness to the rat growth hormone declined rapidly. Refeeding of the cells with fresh medium did not lead to the recovery of the hormone sensitivity, indicating that the decrease in sensitivity was not due to exhaustion of medium components but that it seemed to be a specific property of F442A cells. As glycerophosphate dehydrogenase activity was detected at nearly the same time as its mRNA was measurable, it is likely that the mRNA is translated immediately after its synthesis.

    Notes: Various polymeric materials were combusted in a small-scale box model equipped with an air supply system to determine the evolution of toxic gases and evaluate the toxicity of the environment containing these gases. There were cases where concentrations of HCN, acrolein and formaldehyde were higher in terms of potential toxicity than that of CO. Overall experimental results indicate that small-scale experiments are useful in evaluating combustion toxicity of materials.

    Notes: Flow visualization of a scaled down rubber compounding process in an internal mixer is described. The mastication of scaled down rubber bales, and the addition of carbon black and oil were studied. The times required for rubber bale ‘pickup’ by the rotors as well as bale homogenization time were determined for various elastomers. The times required to incorporate black and oil were measured.
