Notes: The augmented BACK equation of state for polar fluids is extended to mixtures by introducing mixing rules separately for the nonpolar and polar interactions. Fluid phase equilibria are calculated for polar + nonpolar, and polar + polar mixtures including mixtures of hydrogen-bonding substances. Enthalpy calculations are illustrated with enthalpy of H2S + N2 and heats of mixing of steam mixtures, and carbon dioxide mixtures.Cross interaction coefficients are adjusted for the correlation of data on binary mixtures. Both phase equilibrium and enthalpy data are correlated at the same time with two such coefficients for each binary. The cross interaction coefficients are constants, invariant with temperature, density, or phase state.

Notes: The pressure of water is decoupled into a polar pressure and a nonpolar pressure, the latter being obtained from the BACK equation based on the size and nonpolar energy of the water molecule determined by Jorgensen and coworkers. The polar pressure is obtained upon subtracting the nonpolar pressure from the total pressure given by the steam table equation of Keenan et al. The polar pressure function thus obtained for water is generalized to augment the BACK equation for the general description of polar fluids.Equation constants are reported for 26 substances. Calculated vapor pressure, liquid molal volume, and pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) behavior are compared with data. Mixing rules are introduced to express poles interacting with poles and dispersion modes interacting with dispersion modes, but not poles interacting with dispersion modes. PVT relationship, vapor-liquid equilibrium, and liquid-liquid equilibrium in mixtures of water and nonpolar substances are calculated.

Notes: The electroreduction of nitrobenzene in deoxygenated acid solution generates predominantly either p-aminophenol or aniline via the common electrochemically generated intermediate, phenylhydroxylamine. Square wave current control increases the reaction selectivity for p-aminophenol, which is produced in a chemical pathway from the intermediate over that obtained at the average current of the oscillation. Data collected under electrokinetic-controlled reaction conditions on a planar copper electrode in a water-propanol-sulfuric acid medium show an order of magnitude increase in selectivity at 100 Hz over that measured at the average direct current. The electrode is depolarized under periodic current control which results in lower rates of undesired electrochemical reactions with a consequential increase in chemical product selectivity. Implications and limitations of periodic electrochemical reaction rate control are discussed.

Notes: Measurements of solids motion in a fluidized bed have been made in a computer-aided particle tracking facility. A radioactive tracer particle, dynamically identical to the solid particles to be studied, was mixed with the solids in the bed. The gamma radiation from the tracer was continuously monitored by a large number of scintillation detectors located around the bed, providing information on the tracer's instantaneous location. Prudent use was made of the purposely introduced redundant distance data to achieve improved accuracy. The recognition of the existence of secondary emission due to the interaction of the primary radiation and other system materials and the subsequent devising of a scheme to mitigate its effect contribute much to the success. Results for a bed with a uniform air distributor plate show the existence of two counter-rotating toroidal vortices whose relative sizes and strengths vary with the fluidizing velocity. Fluctuating motions at low frequencies ranging from 1.6 to 16 Hz have been observed at various locations in the bed.

Notes: A second-generation capped deep-UV portable conformable masking system Is described. Two major improvements of this system are; (1) The replacement of the PMMA bottom layer with the PMMA-MA-MAN terpolymer which has a higher thermal stability and a higher deep-UV sensitivity. (2) The application of the mold hardening process to eliminate the “wings” protruding from the novolac-terpolymer interface, to facilitate a better choice of developers for the bottom layer, and to provide a better refractive index match between the novolac image lines.
