    Description: The fragmentation of a 225 MeV/n O-16 beam was investigated at the Bevalac. Preliminary cross sections for mass = 13, 14, 15 fragments are used to constrain the nuclear excitation functions employed in galactic propagation calculations. Comparison to cosmic ray isotonic data at low energies shows that in the cosmic ray source C-13/C approximately 2% and N-14/0=3-6%. No source abundance of N-15 is required with the current experimental results.

    Description: The discovery of broad emission features between 3.2 and 3.6 microns were reported in the spectrum of Nova Cen 1986 (V842 Cen) some 300 days following outburst and remaining prominent for several months. The general characteristics of these features are similar to those attributed to polycyclic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules in other dusty sources, although the relative strengths are different, and these observations provide the first clear evidence for molecular constituents other than graphite particles in the ejecta of novae.

    Description: The problems found in an attempt to adapt an automated scanner of astronomical plates, the Minnesota Automated Dual Plate Scanner (APS), to locating and measuring the etch pits produced by ionizing particles in plastic nuclear track detectors (CR-39) are described. A visual study of these pits was made to determine the errors introduced in determining positions and shapes. Measurements made under a low power microscope were compared with those from the APS.

    Description: The potential of the Space Station as a platform for cosmic-ray and high-energy gamma-ray astronomy is discussed in reviews, reports, and specific proposals. Topics examined include antiparticles and electrons, science facilities and new technology, high-energy nuclear interactions, nuclear composition and energy spectra, Space Shuttle experiments, Space Station facilities and detectors, high-energy gamma rays, and gamma-ray facilities and techniques. Consideration is given to universal-baryon-symmetry testing on the scale of galactic clusters, particle studies in a high-inclination orbit, balloon-borne emulsion-chamber results on ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus interactions, ionization states of low-energy cosmic rays, a large gamma-ray telescope for point-source studies above 1 GeV, and the possible existence of stable quark matter.

    Description: The energy loss mechanism for slowly moving magnetic monopoles in helium provides a means of extending the search for such particles by ionization techniques to velocities approximately 3 X 1 million cm/sec (beta approximately equals 0.0001). Other gases (e.g., CH2 or CO2) mixed with helium will be ionized with high efficiency by collisions with excited helium atoms, thus allowing the use of large proportional chamber systems for the detection of the monopoles. The first reported results utilizing this mechanism was the experiment of Kajino, et al., using a detector with an area-solid angle product alpha time delta alpha of 24.7 square meters sr. They set a limit on the flux of monopoles of 7.2 x 10 to the 13th power cm(-2) sr(-1) sec(-1) at a 90% confidence level for beta 3x 0.0001. Here, the results of a He:CH2 proportional tube array designed to extend the velocity limit down to beta approximately 0.0001 are reported. The detector which has been operating at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) since last summer, is a prototype for a larger array currently under construction at UCSD. The data presented here is from 200 days of live time with the prototype detector.

    Description: The only two firmly identified galactic gamma-ray sources in the second COS B catalogue are the pulsars PSR 0531+21 (Crab) and PSR 0833-45 (Vela). In the region between 100 keV and 10 MeV the detailed shape of the emission is particularly important, since one expects a turn-off which is related to geometry of the source. A marginal evidence of such a turn-off just below 1 MeV has been reported for the Vela pulsar. In order to study sources with a well marked time signature in this energy band, the FIGARO - French Italian Gamma Ray Observatory was designed. The first version was launched in November 1983 from the Sao Manuel base (Brazil), and was destroyed in a free fall following a balloon burst at an altitude of 50 mbar. A brief description is given of the new improved version of the experiment, FIGARO 2, which is nearly completed and whose launch is scheduled before summer 1986.

    Description: Wolf-Rayet stars figure prominently in astrophysical research. As a bonus, they seem to offer, in the recent past, an interesting connection between classical astronomy and high energy astrophysics due to their unusual composition and their huge mechanical power. The material flowing from WC stars (carbon-rich WR stars) contains gas which has been processed through core-helium burning, i.e., considerably enriched into 12C,16O, 22Ne, and 25,26Mg. This composition is reminiscent of the cosmic ray source anomalies. Encouraging agreement is obtained with observation in the mass range 12 A 26 assuming acceleration of wind particles at the shock that delineates the WR cavity, and adequate dilution with normal cosmic rays, but silicon poses.

    Description: The order of the Galactic cosmic ray source (GCRS) composition in terms of first ionization potential (FIP) was examined. For most elements, the degree of volatility is (positively) correlated with the value of the FIP, so that it is not easy to distinguish a correlation of GCRS abundances anomalies with FIP from a correlation with volatility. Only a few permit to distinguish between the two kinds of ordering: if they are depleted relative to refractory metals, volatility must be relevant, if not, FIP is relevant. Among them Cu and Zn would seem to favor FIP. Among the best indicators are Ge and Pb. The abundance anomalies in GCRS are defined relative to a standard which, for the heavy elements concerned, is commonly taken as C1 Carbonaceous Chondrites. Photospheric abundances are more directly representative of the protosolar nebula, and hence of ordinary local galactic (LG) matter. The Ge and Pb reference abundance determinations in the Photosphere and in C1 meteorites are examined and their relevance to the problem with FIP vs. volatility in GCRs is discussed.

    Description: Using a propagation calculation with energy dependent parameters, including the depletion of short pathlengths, and incorporating experimental nuclear excitation functions, the variation of the Be-10/Be9 ratio with the matter densities in two nested confinement regions is investigated. It is shown that there is no unique correspondence between a Be-10/Be9 measurement at low energy and the density of matter in the galaxy. Be-10/Be9 measurements at both low and high energy are needed to fully specify the matter densities.
