    Notes: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the treatment of tumor tissue with a photosensitizer and light to effect the delineation and/or eradication of the tumor. PDT is a two step process: (1) incorporation of photosensitizer into the cell where it must be retained by tumors in vivo; and (2) illumination of the tumor cell with light to effect cell death. Hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) is a complex mixture of porphyrins currently used for PDT in the clinical setting. Hematoporphyrin-based oligomers of up to five subunits were determined using fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry of the high-molecular-weight fraction of the drug. Reduction of this fraction with LiAlH4 permitted determination of the covalent bond linking the monomers in these oligoporphyrins. Application of these analytical procedures to the determination of the composition of different preparations of HPD will be described.

    Notes: Transmission-line models (TLMs) for nonlinear reactive components and mutual inductances are derived. The model for nonlinear reactive components is shown to be an improvement on the previous one. TLM results with the mutual inductance model are compared with the exact solution, and good agreement is found.

    Notes: The multigrid technique, which is mainly used in the finite difference method, is applied to the TLM (transmission-line matrix or modeling) procedure. In the multigrid TLM, the field region is covered with sets of regular transmission-line matrices of different mesh sizes. The finer grid pattern, which overlaps the coarser grid, fills the region with high field gradients. Data obtained in the coarser grid are transferred to the finer grid through an interpolation process and used as boundary conditions for the latter. The finer grid data are then transferred back to the coarser one, thus improving the coarse grid values. The method is applied to several diffusion problems and significant improvements in accuracy and efficiency are shown.

    Notes: The dynamic behaviour of a saggy suspension cable under a moving load was investigated. First of all, the updated Lagrangian formulation and the finite element method were used to derive the property matrices of a saggy suspension cable in order to define the discretized equations of motion. Then, the Jacobi method was applied to the determination of the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of the suspended cable. The moving-load-induced dynamic responses of the saggy suspended cable were obtained by using the Newmark direct integration method incorporated with the Newton-Raphson iteration technique. The influence of some pertinent factors, such as speed of moving load, ratio of axial rigidity to total cable weight (AE/0m̄g0L) and ratio of moving load mass to total cable mass, is the key point of the dynamic analysis.

    Notes: The observation that protonated molecules are present in solvents utilized for fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometric studies has been demonstrated using visible absorption spectrometry. Addition of porphyrins to thioglycerol, a solvent used for FAB analyses, results in partial protonation of the molecule. This reaction can be monitored by observing the shift in visible absorption maxima associated with the molecular transition from free base to protonated structure. A good correlation is observed between the degree of protonation indicated by the appropriate absorption bands and the abundance of the [M + H]+ ion in the FAB spectrum of the corresponding solution. Addition of certain non-polar porphyrin molecules to thioglycerol does not result in the protonation of the molecule in solution; in these cases, analyses of the corresponding solutions by FAB do not yield [M + H]+ ions. Subsequent addition of trifluoroacetic acid to the solvent has proved sufficient to protonate the analyte molecule, as indicated by the visible absorption spectrum; FAB analyses of these non-polar porphyins in acidified solvent result in the observation of [M + H]+ ions. These experiments demonstrate that analyses of these analyte molecules requires that they be present as ions in solution prior to analysis by FAB. This study provides experimental evidence for the presence of ions in solutions employed for FAB analysis, suggesting that these ions are essential for the generation of the protonated molecules observed during FAB mass spectrometric analyses.

    Notes: The paper is concerned with the solution and determination of the optimum shape of a retaining wall modelled by the co-ordinates of a set of points which belongs to a certain permissible space.An optimum design method is formulated as a non-linear multiobjective optimization problem. The following two objective functions, which are mutually conflicting and non-commensurable with each other, are considered: (a) to minimize the total weight of the wall, (b) to maximize the structure stability.A set of Pareto optimum solutions is derived numerically by adopting a logical algorithm, and a Pereto optimum solution is obtained by investigating the trade-off relationships among design objectives.

    Notes: An adaptive grid generation technique based on modified variational principles coupled with an exponential clustering has been developed and tested successfully for the computation of steady inviscid transonic projectile aerodynamics. The isoperimetric problem for adaptive gridding is to extremize a grid smoothness functional subject to grid orthogonality and resolution functionals; however, the Lagrange multipliers have been assumed to be variables with zero variation and are properly chosen as functions of local grid size to enhance locally the grid resolution as well as to maintain the weight of three grid characteristics the same over the entire flow field. With computed pressure gradient as the control function for grid adaptation, the resulting Euler equations cannot provide sufficient grid resolution in the boundary layer region of the projectile geometry; hence, a clustering technique is needed to redistribute the points along the normal grid lines. A grid generation code has been developed and coupled to an axisymmetric thin-layer Navier-Stokes code for self-adaptive grid generation. For the three transonic flow cases considered, M∞ = 0.91, 0.96 and 1.10, the distribution of surface pressure calculated from the inviscid option of the Navier-Stokes code is indeed in excellent agreement with published measured data.
