Notes: The intrinsic rate constant for the rate of reaction of SO2 with porous CaO in an excess of O2 to form CaSO4 has been determined from SO2 sorption data on a wide range of particle diameters (1 μm- 1mm), SO2 partial pressures (60 Pa to 5 kPa), and temperatures (973- 1,478 K). An intrinsic SO2 reaction order of unity has been validated through current fixed-bed experiments in the 60 to 300 Pa SO2 partial pressure range, while fluidized-bed data were used to validate the reaction order from 500 Pa to 5 kPa SO2 partial pressure. The absolute value of the rate constant and the activation energy was derived from data on small (1 μm) particles, which approach the limit of kinetic control. While analysis of this data base does minimize the role of intraparticle diffusion through the porous sorbent particle, the filling of the small pores by the product deposits and the associated loss of internal surface area is critical to the data reduction. It is believed that the intrinsic rate constant is known to the accuracy to which the reactivity and the BET surface area may be measured.

Notes: The mathematical model outlined in Part I is recast in a form suitable for numerical computation. The spatial derivatives are replaced by finite-difference expressions, which leads to a set of ordinary differential equations coupled to a set of nonlinear algebraic relations. This system is solved using existing integration techniques. The resulting algorithm simulates the characteristic behavior of the classical modes of electrophoresis, which is shown by examples involving moving boundary electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing. In the first example two different integration schemes are used and their accuracy and stability investigated. The second example illustrates the versatility of the methodology.

Notes: The excitation conditions have been studied and the accuracy and sensitivity estimated of the MECA-10-44 energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometer, in the determination of contents of 10 major and 25-30 rare and scattered elements in samples of rocks and ores. The use of the instrument for the rapid routine analysis of geological samples for separate groups of elements has been demonstrated; when carrying out combined geochemical investigations, such an instrument represents an essential link in the system of analytical methods applied for complete elemental composition analysis.

Notes: Pyrolysis-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization was used to study the thermal decomposition of the energetic material cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) and characterization of the individual molecular ion products was accomplished by tandem mass spectrometry. The analysis was aided with pyrolysis mass spectra of the (15N)- and perdeuterated RDX isotopes, and molecular formulae were derived for the m/z 46, 60, 74, 75, 85 and 98 molecular ions in the RDX pyrolysis mass spectrum. Equivalent fragments between the daughter ion mass spectra of the unlabeled and labeled RDX were determined in order to define a structure for each pyrolysis feature. Daughter ion mass spectra of pure reference compounds confirmed the identity of five of the six molecular ions. Perdeuterated RDX analyses provided evidence that m/z 74 and 75 are N,N-dimethylformamide and N-nitrosodimethylamine, respectively; m/z 46, 60 and 85 were identified as the protonated forms of formamide, N-methylformamide and dimethylaminoacetonitrile, respectively.

Notes: Compacted discs prepared from a mixture of finely divided particles of a compound diluted in a large excess of metal powder facilitate the measurement of Raman spectra for some compounds which give poor scattering by conventional techniques. The method is most useful with coloured compounds. The advantages include simplicity, increased signal-to-noise ratio by factors of up to 1000 and decreased or altered fluorescence. The effect appears to be caused mainly by small crevices in the compacted metal surface which act as internal mirrors to produce many small multiple-reflection cells, but there is also evidence of an electronic interaction with the metal surface. Silver, aluminium and copper matrices were studied, silver being found to be the most advantageous, although aluminium under certain conditions may also be effective.

Description: An analytical method of obtaining the natural frequencies and mode shapes of clamped, rectangular plates having a small initial curvature is presented. Specifically, the singular perturbation technique is used to reduce the fourth-order plate vibration problem to the simpler membrane problem with modified boundary conditions that account for the bending effects. The eigenfrequencies for plates with inverse aspect ratios varying between 0.1 and 1.0 and for the dimensionless normal prestress between 0.1 and 1.0 have been presented for values of epsilon, the normalized bending rigidity, ranging between 0.0010 and 0.2500. It is established that a small initial curvature has no effect on the frequency of vibration of the plate. However, its effect is manifested in the eigenmodes.

Description: The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to solve the transverse free vibration of a slightly curved, thin rectangular plate. Analytical results for natural frequencies and mode shapes are presented in the limit when the dimensionless bending rigidity, epsilon, is small compared with in-plane forces. Results for different boundary conditions are obtained when the initial deflection is: (1) a polynomial in both directions, and (2) the product of a polynomial and a trigonometric function, and arbitrary. For the arbitrary initial deflection case, the Fourier series technique is used to define the initial deflection. The results obtained show that the natural frequencies of vibration of slightly curved plates are coincident with those of perfectly flat, prestressed rectangular plates. However, the eigenmodes are very different from those of initially flat prestressed rectangular plates. The total deflection is found to be the sum of the initial deflection, the deflection resulting from the solution of the flat plate problem, and the deflection resulting from the static problem.

Description: Described is a program for development of coolant passage geometries, material systems, and joining processes that will produce long-life hydrogen-cooled structures for scramjet applications. Tests were performed to establish basic material properties, and samples constructed and evaluated to substantiate fabrication processes and inspection techniques. Results of the study show that the basic goal of increasing the life of hydrogen-cooled structures two orders of magnitude relative to that of the Hypersonic Research Engine can be reached with available means. Estimated life is 19000 cycles for the channels and 16000 cycles for pin-fin coolant passage configurations using Nickel 201. Additional research is required to establish the fatigue characteristics of dissimilar-metal coolant passages (Nickel 201/Inconel 718) and to investigate the embrittling effects of the hydrogen coolant.

Notes: The flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids which obeys a power law relationship between shear stress and shear rate has been modeled in the melt conveying section of a self-wiping co-rotating twin-screw extruder using a finite element analysis of an unwound channel section. Predictions of throughput against pressure gradient are compared with experimentally obtained results for maize grits which is represented as a power law material. Rheological data applicable to extrusion simulation were obtained from capillary rheometry. Comparisons are reasonable with predicted characteristic showing similar behavior.
