    Notes: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the treatment of tumor tissue with a photosensitizer and light to effect the delineation and/or eradication of the tumor. PDT is a two step process: (1) incorporation of photosensitizer into the cell where it must be retained by tumors in vivo; and (2) illumination of the tumor cell with light to effect cell death. Hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) is a complex mixture of porphyrins currently used for PDT in the clinical setting. Hematoporphyrin-based oligomers of up to five subunits were determined using fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry of the high-molecular-weight fraction of the drug. Reduction of this fraction with LiAlH4 permitted determination of the covalent bond linking the monomers in these oligoporphyrins. Application of these analytical procedures to the determination of the composition of different preparations of HPD will be described.

    Notes: The observation that protonated molecules are present in solvents utilized for fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometric studies has been demonstrated using visible absorption spectrometry. Addition of porphyrins to thioglycerol, a solvent used for FAB analyses, results in partial protonation of the molecule. This reaction can be monitored by observing the shift in visible absorption maxima associated with the molecular transition from free base to protonated structure. A good correlation is observed between the degree of protonation indicated by the appropriate absorption bands and the abundance of the [M + H]+ ion in the FAB spectrum of the corresponding solution. Addition of certain non-polar porphyrin molecules to thioglycerol does not result in the protonation of the molecule in solution; in these cases, analyses of the corresponding solutions by FAB do not yield [M + H]+ ions. Subsequent addition of trifluoroacetic acid to the solvent has proved sufficient to protonate the analyte molecule, as indicated by the visible absorption spectrum; FAB analyses of these non-polar porphyins in acidified solvent result in the observation of [M + H]+ ions. These experiments demonstrate that analyses of these analyte molecules requires that they be present as ions in solution prior to analysis by FAB. This study provides experimental evidence for the presence of ions in solutions employed for FAB analysis, suggesting that these ions are essential for the generation of the protonated molecules observed during FAB mass spectrometric analyses.

The compounds are 4-n-alkyl-4′-cyanobiphenyls and 4-n-alkyloxy-4′-cyanobiphenyls, with the alkyl group ranging from pentyl to octyl. 13C and 1H chemical shifts and 13C-1H scalar coupling constants are tabulated.

    Description: The noise due to finite-word-length effects is analyzed for digital-signal power processors using Welch's power-spectrum estimation technique to measure the power of Gaussian random signals over a frequency band of interest. The input of the digital signal processor contains a finite-length time interval in which the true Gaussian signal is contaminated by Gaussian noise. The roundoff noise-to-signal ratio in the measurement of the signal power is derived, and computer simulations which validate the analytical results are presented. These results can be used in tradeoff studies of hardware design, such as the number of bits required at each processing stage. The results presented in this paper are currently being used in the design of a digital Doppler processor (Chi et al., 1986) for a radar scatterometer.

The results can be used in tradeoff studies of hardware design such as number of bits required at each processing stage. The results are used in the design of a DPP for the NASA scatterometer planned to be launched in 1990.

    Description: A number of representative techniques for analyzing frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs), which comprise periodic arrays of patches or apertures in a conducting screen and find important applications as filters in microwaves and optics, are discussed. The basic properties of the FSSs are reviewed and several different approaches to predicting their frequency-response characteristics are described. Some recent developments in the treatment of truncated, curved, and doubly periodic screens are mentioned and representative experimental results are included.
