Notes: A rapid and reproducible procedure suitable for the analysis of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in sludges and soil samples has been developed. The PACs are isolated by ultrasonic extraction with methyl chloride, redissolution of the crude extract in isooctane and clean-up of the PAC-containing fraction by chromatography on alumina micro-columns. After separation and quantitative determination of the various PACs by capillary gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, more than 50 PAC compounds which cover a wide range of concentrations were detected in the sludge samples. The most abundant compounds were mono-, di- and trimethyl derivatives of naphthalene, phenanthrene, fluorene, dibenzethiophene and naphthothiophene. No accumulation of PAC in an agricultural soil after an experiment of compost application over three years was observed.

Notes: The electron impact induced fragmentations observed in the mass spectra of eight 1,4-diene-3-ketopregnane steroids are described. The effect of hydroxyl substituents in positions 11β, 17α and 21, on the typical fragmentation pattern is analysed; in particular the ‘long range’ effect of the 17α-hydroxy group on the relative abundance of the ions m/z 121 and 122 is confirmed using specific deuterium labelling.

Notes: The influence of the photons emitted by a 241Am XRF excitation source below 59.6 keV on sample fluorescence production has been analysed. A general method for evaluating the contribution of the various lines from the source in specific equipment configurations is presented. The excitation was performed with 23 elemental targets and the measured experimental intensities were fitted by means of a minimization program which takes into account the most important transition groups observed in the spectrum of the excitation source. The program allows for attenuation of excitation and fluoresced photons in the target. Intensity data for the exciting beam were compared with the theoretical intensities of photons from 237Np, and it was concluded that these values are compatible with the Am and Al thicknesses of the excitation source. Correction factors considering low-energy transitions were calculated for several elements for both thick and thin targets. The over-excitation evaluated for Z = 34 reached values ranging between 180% and 550%.

Notes: 20-Methylpregna-4,20-dien-3-one and the corresponding 17α-hydroxy, 20-hydroxymethyl and 17α-hydroxy-20-hydroxymethyl derivatives were prepared from the 20-keto compounds by Wittig reaction or a modified Simmons-Smith reaction. The 13C NMR spectra of these steroids and of 3-methylene derivatives are analysed. Solvent effects produced by addition of methanol-d4 in the spectra of the 20-methylene steroids are correlated with intramolecular hydrogen bonding in the corresponding 20-ketosteroids.

Notes: The νt(OH) and νt(OD) torsional modes in some chloro-substituted derivatives of phenol were assigned from their Raman spectra in CS2 solution. The corresponding rotation barriers were then calculated by means of a rigorous optimization method. Some theoretical calculations have allowed an extension of the discussion to the vapour phase.

Notes: A study of the electronic, infrared, Raman and pre-resonace Raman spectra of the solid complex tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)vanadium(III) was performed. The excitation profiles of the vibrational modes that show preresonance on excitation with laser lines within the electronic bands in the visible region are reported and, on this basis and molecular orbital calculations, several vibrational and electronic absorption bands were assigned.
