    Description: Recent optical and spectrophotometric observations of all currently known DAO and DO hot white dwarf candidates from the Palomar-Green Survey are presented. The optical observations were carried out using the Kitt Peak National Observatory Intensified Image Dissector Scanner (IIDS) system, the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT), and two photon-counting Reticon systems. Ultraviolet spectrophotometry was obtained using the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) short-wavelength and long-wavelength cameras. The following spectroscopic subgroups were identified in the observations: the cool DO stars with spectra showing H I features together with He II + H blends; the hot DO stars, with spectra exhibiting weak He II (+H) lines; and hydrogen-rich DAO stars with broad H lines and sharp H II lines at 4686 A. A fourth subgroup of stars resembling PG 1159 with He at He II lines at 4686, and a C, N ion blend in the optical spectrum were also found. The spectroscopic data were analyzed in terms of a grid of hot, high-gravity LTE model atmospheres composed of a mixture of hydrogen and helium, and atmospheric parameters are deduced for each class of objects. On the basis of the model atmosphere analysis, the local space density of the DO stars is estimated to be 1.9-3.0 x 10 to the -7th per cubic pc, depending on the scale height.

    Description: IUE data are presented on three AM Her stars (CW 1103 + 254, E1114 + 182, and PG 1550 + 191) which are used in conjunction with optical and IR fluxes to study the accretion characteristics of these systems in relation to other polars.The time-resolved IUE spectra of CW 1103 show that the column contributes little to the UV, while the white dwarf, with a temperature of approximately 13,000 K and a distance of approximately 140 pc, is the dominant source of light. Thus, CW 1103 at its normal state is basically very similar to VV Pup at its low accretion state, except for increased IR emission that is not connected to the accretion column or the secondary. E1114 also appears to be a low UV emitter, but better data are needed to constrain the observed temperature. On the other hand, PG 1550 has a steeper UV distribution, with a possibility for a hot Rayleigh-Jeans component at wavelengths less than 1600 A. This source is very similar to E1405-451 and AM Her itself.

    Description: A comprehensive analysis of E 1114 + 182, the first eclipsing AM Herculis binary system and the shortest-period eclipsing cataclysmic variable known, is presented. The time-resolved X-ray observations which led to the system's recognition as an AM Her system with a roughly 90 minute orbital period are reported. The current optical photometric and polarimetric ephemeris and a description of the system's phase-modulated properties are given. The detailed photometric eclipse profile and the highly variable spectroscopic behavior are addressed. This information is used to determine systemic parameters and derive new information on the line emission regions. The data put severe constraints on current torque models for keeping the binary and white dwarf rotation in phase.

    Description: An analysis of PG 1034 + 001 extended to include the high-dispersion IUE spectra and the high-resolution optical multiple-mirror telescope echelle spectra is discussed. The observations reveal the presence of absorption lines (C IV at 1548 and 1551 A, N V at 1238 and 1242 A, and O V at 1371 A) from highly ionized species with large redshifts (+ 40-50) km/s) relative to the interstellar lines. The results of a preliminary abundance analysis of the photospheric lines, together with the results of a search of sharp shortward-shifted features are presented. An interpretation of the observed abundances is made in terms of selective radiative forces acting in a high-temperature photosphere. Some speculations on the evolutionary status of DO stars like PG 1034 + 001 are given.

    Description: The discovery of strong O VI absorption/emission lines in five members of the PG 1159 degenerate stars is reported. It is shown that the optical spectra are dominated by C IV, O VI, and He II, with no detectable N lines. It is confirmed that the planetary nebula-central star, K1-16, which is found to be a pulsating star by Grauer and Bond (1984), is a member of the spectroscopic group. The detection of strong oxygen features in the photospheres of the objects provides support of the prediction of Starrfield et al. (1984). The properties of the PG 1159 stars are compared with the so-called O VI central stars of planetary nebulae and both groups of stars are found to have similar spectral features, temperatures, and luminosities. The implications of the O VI/PG 1159 evolutionary link are assessed.

    Description: A comprehensive photometric and spectroscopic study of the low state of the novalike variable TT Ari has been made with observations spanning the UV to IR spectral regions. The roughly 5 mag drop in the system's luminosity from the high state indicates that the mass-transfer rate decreased by more than two orders of magnitude. The drastic reduction in the luminosity of the accretion disk between the high and low states enabled the white dwarf component to be directly observed for the first time. The broad absorption profiles at various lines and the UV energy distribution are best fitted by a hot white dwarf. A lower limit of 200 pc for the distance to TT Ari is derived, and the behavior of TT Ari is compared to that of another novalike variable, MV Lyr. The long-term photometric behavior of TT Ari makes it a typical member of the VY Scl subclass of novalike variables.

    Description: In a survey for galactic plane UV-excess objects, a very hot (T about 100,000 K) helium-rich white dwarf is discovered. The object is spectroscopically similar to the pulsating PG 1159 class of stars, with narrow emission lines of He II, probably C IV, and possibly C III/N III, although there is no trace of carbon absorptions. Not all features have positive identifications. This object appears to be an old PG 1159 star, having ceased pulsations during evolution toward a more typical DO white dwarf.

    Description: The discovery of two magnetic white dwarfs culled from blue star surveys is reported. The surveys were carried out with the Mount Lemnon 1.5-meter reflecting telescope attached to a two-holer polarimeter/photometer. Spectral observations of the objects, (PG 1533 - 057, and K813 - 14), indicate the presence of hydrogen and Zeeman components. On the basis of dipolar field simulations, it is shown that PG 1533 - 057 has a polar field strength of 31 megagauss (MG) while K813 - 14 has a polar field strength of 29 MG. A third known white dwarf has a polar field strength of 18 MG. All the dwarfs had temperatures in the 11,000-20,000 K range. The possibility that a significant fraction of isolated magnetic degenerate stars could be the progeny of magnetic accreting binary systems is considered.

    Description: In the present study of astrometric, photometric, and spectrophotometric data for the low luminosity carbon star G77-61, radial velocity variations are detected which have a binary period of 245 days. The unseen companion is probably a cool white dwarf of much higher mass than the visible object. The most straightforward evolutionary hypothesis is that this star has an extremely metal-poor composition, and that it accreted a small amount of carbon-rich material when the now-unseen primary was at maximum radius. This may have inverted the C/O abundance of the secondary without achieving common envelope evolution and a sorter period.

    Description: New observations and a new synthetic spectrum of the cool white dwarf LP 701-29 are presented. The analysis suggests that the atmosphere of this star is helium dominated, with enhanced metal abundances compared to the usual abundances of white dwarfs. The best fit is achieved with an effective temperature of 4500 K and an abundance of heavy elements (especially Ca) of the order 0.01 of the solar ratio of metals to helium.
