Notes: In order to assess the geometric changes caused when the antitumor drug cis-diammine-dichloroplatinum(II) (cis-DDP) binds to DNA, molecular mechanics calculations were performed on two double-stranded and two single-stranded oligonucleotides and their adducts with cis-{Pt(NH3)2}2+. For the platinated duplexes, three model structures have been derived, one involving only local disruption of base pairing with retention of the helix directionality, and two models showing pronounced kinking of the double helix. One of the kinked models is stabilized by bridging sodium ions. The other kinked duplex model shows retention of all Watson-Crick base pairing, including that of the coordinated guanines. All models exhibit hydrogen bonds connecting one ammine ligand of platinum with one or two phosphate groups located at the 5′ side of the platinated strand.

Description: A grid of cooling flow models for the hot gas in normal elliptical galaxies is calculated, including the loss of gas due to inhomogeneous cooling. The loss process is modeled as a distributed sink for the gas with the rate of loss being proportional to the local cooling rate. The cooling flow models with gas loss have smaller sonic radii, smaller inflow rates in their central regions, lower densities, and higher temperatures than homogeneous models. The reduction in the amount of hot gas flowing into the center of the models brings the models into much better agreement with the observed X-ray surface brightness profiles of elliptical galaxies. However, there is a large dispersion in the observed X-ray luminosities of ellipticals, and this cannot be explained by variations in the efficiency of gas loss. The gas-loss models have X-ray surface brightness profiles which are much less centrally peaked than the no-gas-loss models.

Description: The black-hole/accretion-disk model proposed to explain the high observed luminosities of AGN is discussed, reviewing the results of recent observational and theoretical investigations. The derivation of the governing equations for black holes and thick or thin disks is outlined; numerical predictions are presented in tables and graphs; and the observational implications for the thermal continuum and its polarization, the broad emission lines, and thermal light variations are explored.

Description: The first measurements of the semiforbidden C III 1909 A and forbidden N II 6583 A emission lines in I Zw 18 are reported. These data are combined with previously published spectrophotometry in order to derive the carbon and nitrogen abundances in I Zw 18 with the aid of a nebular model. The CNO abundances in I Zw 18 are found to exceed those found in the Magellanic Clouds and other well-observed oxygen-poor irregular galaxies and are more similar to those in the sun and nearby Galactic H II regions. It is argued that I Zw 18 may be older and more chemically evolved than previously believed, and that its extremely low O/H results from escape of O-rich supernova ejecta from the Galaxy or from dilution by accretion of primordial gas. Alternatively, I Zw 18 may have formed from a preenriched intergalactic medium. Spectroscopic diagnostics for composite photoionization models to fit the spectrum of I Zw 18 are discussed.
