    Description: The X-ray spectra of 27 Seyfert galaxies measured with the Solid State Spectrometer (SSS) onboard the Einstein Observatory is investigated. This new investigation features the utilization of simultaneous data from the Monitor Proportional Counter (MPC) and automatic correction for systematic effects in the SSS. The new results are that the best-fit single power law indices agree with those previously reported, but that soft excesses are inferred for at least 20 percent of the measured spectra. The soft excesses are consistent with either an approximately 0.25 keV black body or Fe-L line emission.

    Description: A computational method is developed for the estimation of parameters in a distributed model for a flexible structure. The structure we consider (part of the RPL experiment) consists of a cantilevered beam with a thruster and linear accelerometer at the free end. The thruster is fed by a pressurized hose whose horizontal motion effects the transverse vibration of the beam. The Euler-Bernoulli theory is used to model the vibration of the beam and treat the hose-thruster assembly as a lumped or point mass-dashpot-spring system at the tip. Using measurements of linear acceleration at the tip, it is estimated that the parameters (mass, stiffness, damping) and a Voight-Kelvin viscoelastic structural damping parameter for the beam using a least squares fit to the data. Spline based approximations to the hybrid (coupled ordinary and partial differential equations) system are considered; theoretical convergence results and numerical studies with both simulation and actual experimental data obtained from the structure are presented and discussed.

    Description: Two regions of recent star formation in blue irregular galaxies were observed with the IUE in the short wavelength, low dispersion mode. The spectra indicates that the massive star content is similar in these regions and is best fit by massive stars formed in a burst and now are approximately 2.5 to 3.0 million years old.

    Description: A practically important regularization of the Navier-Stokes equations was analyzed. As a continuation of the previous work, the structure of the attractors characterizing the solutins was studied. Local as well as global invariant manifolds were found.     Description: A new approach for solving certain types of boundary value problems about complex configurations is presented. Numerical algorithms from such diverse fields as finite elements, preconditioned Krylov subspace methods, discrete Fourier analysis, and integral equations are combined to take advantage of the memory, speed and architecture of current and emerging supercomputers. Although the approach has application to many branches of computational physics, the present effort is concentrated in areas of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) such as steady nonlinear aerodynamics, time harmonic unsteady aerodynamics, and aeroacoustics. The most significant attribute of the approach is that it can handle truly arbitrary boundary geometries and eliminates the difficult task of generating surface fitted grids.

    Description: The development and testing of a detector to be used in the Energetic X-ray Imaging Telescope Experiment (EXITE) are reported. It consists of a 34 cm diameter NaI(Tl) crystal coupled directly to a single large image intensifier tube with associated silicon PIN diode readout. The measured spatial and energy resolutions at 122 keV are 6mm (FWHM) and 9 percent (FWHM), respectively. This energy resolution is about 50 percent better than that of any previously flown hard X-ray experiment. These resolutions decrease with the square root of the energy of the incident X-ray, indicating that they are determined by the number of photons emitted in the NaI(Tl) scintillator light flash.

    Description: The High Resolution Camera being developed for AXAF is briefly described, comparing it with its predecessor, the Einstein HRI, and providing preliminary performance data. The HRC is a 10 cm x 10 cm detector with CsI coated microchannel plates providing a large field of view device with high X-ray quantum efficiency. The overall sensitivity of the HRC on AXAF is about 50 times that of the Einstein HRI. An example of the power of this instrument is discussed in the context of studies of distant clusters of galaxies. The HRC can detect individual galaxies in a cluster of redshift 1, if they are similar to the early-type galaxies in nearby clusters that have been observed by the Einstein instruments. The HRC will be used to measure the luminosity function for clusters of galaxies as a function of their distance up to a redshift of 1. This will allow observation of evolutionary effects in clusters as a whole, while the detection of individual galaxies will permit studies of galaxy evolution in a cluster environment.
