Notes: Abstract In five-minute records in which they were rejected by their mothers, passive preventions of nipple access, 11- to 15-week-old group-living rhesus monkey infants (Macaca mulatta) initiated fewer playful conctacts with others relative to the other kinds of social contact they initiated, while their overall rates of initiating social contacts may not have been reduced. Whether acts of maternal rejection are costly and distressing to the infant may depend on the nature of the social companions available for it and until more is known of the context of such acts, hypothesis about weaning conflict will be difficult to test in detail.

Notes: Abstract A review of the literature suggested that animals exposed to more risk in their social groups should be more enterprising. Rhesus monkey infants of 37 to 44 weeks were attracted to bait in places out of their mothers' reach. The tests were run in the home pen, in the absence of social companions apart from a sibling in its second year of life, if present. In each test the bait was a sawdust and grain mixture, with two or three raisins, and enterprise was measured in terms of the number of raisins taken. Before the test period, the infants had lived in small stable captive social groups. Infants of non-top-ranking mothers took more raisins than infants of top-ranking mothers, if infants subject to high levels of aggression from their own mothers or from the adult males in their groups, were excluded. Observations of the group in a competitive foraging situation confirmed that non-to-ranking infants should be at greater risk than top-ranking ones. The infants receiving notably high levels of aggression from their mothers or the adult males in their groups took more raisins than the remainder. These results are consistent with the view that experience of risk in a social group can promote enterprise in rhesus monkey infants of less than a year old. The problems of assessing “risk” faced by socially living animals, and the mechanisms whereby experience of risk could enhance enterprise, ere discussed.

Notes: Abstract Special techniques are needed to help us understand the long-term effects of infants' experiences of their relationships with their mothers, especially when direct experimental control of the interaction between mother and young is impossible, or could distort their relationship. A classification approach is developed to show how outcomes in individuals can be predicted from their earlier experiences and characteristics. Four-week-old rhesus monkey infants' characteristic levels of enterprise persisted through their first year, but could be reduced in certain individuals who had been kept off their mothers by high rates of early maternal rejection. Correlational approaches are difficult to interpret when they fail to confirm simple effects of experience or of individual characteristics, because they are based on groups not individuals, and because certain individuals can affect the values of correlation coefficients in ways that cannot be specified without using a classification approach. The possible effects on correlation coefficients of inconsistent individuals, and of being unable to specify which infants respond in which ways to relevant variables were discussed.

Description: The design requirements for a family or type of Public Service Helicopter (PSH) is examined which will satisfy the needs of municipal and state governments in the following mission areas: Emergency Medical Service--Airborne Rescue Squad; Law Enforcement; Search and Rescue; and Environmental Control (Fire Fighting, Pollution, Resource Management). The report compares both design and performance requirements as specified by the PSH user's group against current technological capabilities, RTOPS and US Army LHX design requirements. The study explores various design trade-offs and options available to the aircraft designer/manufacturer in order to meet the several criteria specified by the PSH user's group. In addition, the report includes a brief assessment of the feasibility of employing certain advanced rotorcraft designs to meet the stringent combination of operational capabilities desired by the Public Service Helicopter Users.

Description: Measurement and analysis procedures for cabin noise control ground tests conducted on a DC-9 aircraft test section are presented along with a summary of test results. These tests were designed to analyze the effectiveness of selected noise control treatments in reducing passenger cabin noise on aircraft with aft-mounted, advanced turboprop engines. The performance of various structural and cabin sidewall treatments is assessed, based on measurements of the resulting interior noise levels and fuselage acceleration levels under simulated advanced turboprop excitation.
