Notes: 3-Carboxy-4-hydroxyacetophenone (CHAP) was polycondensed with various proportions of formaldehyde using alcoholic alkali as catalyst. The resin samples, designated as CHAP-F, have been characterized by elemental analyses and IR spectroscopy, by estimation of their number average molecular weights (M̄n), by measurement of intrinsic viscosity, and by TGA. Polymeric metal chelates of one CHAP-F sample with Cu2+, Fe3+, Co2+, Ni2+, and UO22+ ions have been prepared and characterized.Ion-exchanging properties of one CHAP-F resin sample for Fe3+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ metal ions are studied by the application of the batch-equilibration method.

Notes: Bisphenolic resins have been prepared by alkali catalyzed condensation of bisphenol-F, bisphenol-A, and bisphenol-C, respectively, with furfural. The resin samples have been characterized by elemental analysis, dilute solution viscosity measurement, and measurement of number-average molecular weight. Curing reactions of these bisphenolic resins with hexamine have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. The overall apparent activation energies for the curing have been found to be 24 ± 2, 34.2 ± 1.9, and 36.8 ± 2.3 kcal/mole for bisphenol-F-furfural, bisphenol-A-furfural, and bisphenol-C-furfural resin, respectively. The curing reactions have been found to follow an overall first-order kinetics.

Notes: Self polycondensations of 5-amino-2-hydroxyphenacyl chloride (5A2HP), 3-amino-4-hydroxyphenacyl chloride (3A4HP), and 4-amino-2-hydroxyphenacyl chloride (4A2HP) are carried out in nitrobenzene using pyridine as an acid acceptor. The poly(keto-amines) thus formed are characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectral studies, estimation of M̄n by non-aqueous conductometric titration and/or by VPO method, by measurement of solution viscosity in formic acid, and by TGA in air. All three poly(keto-amines) are reduced to poly(amines) by Wolf-Kishner reduction. The poly(amines) thus formed are characterized and compared.Polymeric metal chelates of poly(keto-amines) derived from 5A2HP and 3A4HP with various metal ions are prepared and characterized.

Notes: Polycondensation of furfural, respectively, with o- and p-chlorophenols has been carried out under various reaction conditions. All the resin samples have been characterized by spectral studies, viscometric measurement and by the estimation of the number-average molecular weight. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of selected resin samples has been carried out. The kinetics of curing reaction of selected resin samples has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The properties of the glass laminates prepared using each of the two types of resins showed that the latter are much less suitable than phenol-furfural resin as matrices for the fabrication of laminates.
