With a series of carboxymethyl and carboxyethyl celluloses (DS 0.1 to 1.4) different procedures of total hydrolysis of these anionic cellulose ethers with sulfuric acid and trifluoro acetic acid are compared. Completeness of hydrolysis was assessed by enzymatic determination of the glucose content in the hydrolysate. Calculations of theoretical glucose yield are based on Spurlin's model of substituent distribution. Excessive swelling or fast dissolution of the substrate in the reaction medium was found to be a decisive premisse for complete cleavage of glycosidic bonds without significant decomposition of the fragments obtained.

Unter Verwendung von Carboxymethyl- und Carboxyethyl-Celluloseproben mit DS-Werten zwischen 0,1 und 1,4 wurden verschiedene Varianten der Totalhydrolyse anionischer Celluloseether mit Schwefelsäure und Trifluoressigsäure verglichen. Als Kriterium für die Vollständigkeit der Hydrolyse diente die enzymatisch bestimmte Glucosemenge im Hydrolysat unter Zugrundelegung des Spurlin-Modells für die Substituentenverteilung. Entscheidende Voraussetzung für eine vollständige Spaltung der Glucosidbindungen ohne wesentliche Zersetzung der Spaltstücke ist die ausreichend hohe Quellung des Substrats bzw. seine möglichst rasche Auflüsung im Hydrolysemedium.
