Notes: Studies on tensile strength of polybutadiene (BR) and ethylene-propylene diene rubber (EPDM) having a wide range of flaw sizes have been carried out under both normal and aging conditions. A similar study has been done for a solid propellant rocket insulator compound, based on EPDM. The morphology of tensile fracture surface has also been reported in each case in order to understand the mechanism of rupture. Unlike NR, EPDM, and BR gum vulcanizates, both unaged and aged, show no critical cut length (lc). lc may be defined as the cut length at which the strength decreases abruptly (sometimes there is a drop of a factor of 3 or more, at lc). However, the insulator compound, based on EPDM, exhibits a definite lc in the region of 1.5-1.7 mm. This arises because of anisotropic effect of asbestos fibers. Scanning electron microscopic studies show that the mechanisms of rupture of EPDM and BR gum vulcanizates are similar throughout the whole range of precuts. It occurs through a tearing process originated from the given precut at the center of the samples. A quantitative relation between tensile strength and distance between crack lines/tear lines has also been found. Though insulator compound shows a definite lc, similar fracture surface has been observed over the entire range of flaw sizes.

Notes: Pentafluorobenzyl (PFBz) derivatives of the following nucleobases were prepared: cytosine, 5-methylcytosine, O2-methylcytosine, O2-ethylthymine, O4-ethylthymine, 5-hydroxymethyluracil, N6-methyladenine, O6-methylguanine, O6-hydroxyethylguanine and O6-hydroxyethylpurine. 13C nuclear magnetic resonance was diagnostic for O- versus N-attachment of the PFBz moiety: the resonance of the methylene carbon appeared in the range 29.15-42.13 ppm for NCH2C6F5, and 58.45-69.01 for OCH2C6F5. Considerable structural information was provided by mass spectrometry with ionization by electron impact. All of the derivatives were detected with high sensitivity and specificity by gas chromatography with detection by electron capture negative ion mass spectrometry, reflecting not only their chemical and physical stability, but also their strong tendency to form a structurally diagnostic anion, [M - PFBz]-, in high yield under these ionization conditions. PFBz derivatives are therefore attractive forms of alkyl-substituted nucleobases for analysis by mass spectrometry.

Notes: The polymerization of methyl methacrylate was studied in carbon tetrachloride medium with ferric laurate, a metal soap, in combination with n-hexyl amine as the initiator system at 60°C. The rate of polymerization was found to be linear with the monomer concentration and proportional to the square root of both ferric ion and amine concentration. A reaction scheme involving initial complex formation between ferric ion and amine and subsequent reaction of the complex with the solvent molecule to produce free radicals responsible for initiation of polymerization has been postulated to account for the observed results.

Notes: The DNA base uracil was derivatized with pentafluorobenzoyl chloride, followed by methylation with methyl iodide in the presence of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). In addition to a 3-pentafluoro-benzoyl-1 -methyl derivative of uracil, GC/MS analysis of the reaction mixture revealed the formation of an unusual product, whose molecular weight was 12 U higher than that of the prior derivative. This unexpected product has been identified as the 3-(para-methoxytetrafluorobenzoyl)-1-methyl derivative of uracil. Isotopic labeling and related experiments have revealed that the DMF solvent contributes the oxygen atom of the methoxy group that replaces the para fluorine atom. This work allowed a single derivative to be obtained for the methylation reaction by changing the solvent to acetonitrile.

Notes: The effect of various substituted amines on the polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by ferric laurate - amine as the initiator system has been studied in carbon tetrachloride medium at 60°C. Amines used are n-butyl amine, di-n-butyl amine. The rate of polymerization is found to follow the order: tertiary 〉 secondary 〉 primary amine. From the detailed kinetic studies it was found that the overall polymerization rate can be expressed by the equation: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ R_p = \frac{{k_p }}{{k_t^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} }}(k_1 f)^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} [{\rm Monomer}][{\rm Fe}^{3 + } ]^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} [{\rm Amine}]^{{1 \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} 2}} $\end{document} The relative activity of the different amines has been found to be dependent on the relative electron-donating tendency of the substituents present in the amine. The mechanism of the polymerization is discussed on the basis of these results, and various kinetic constants are evaluated.

Notes: Initiation of polymerization of methyl methacrylate with redox system montmorillonite (with lattice Fe3+)-thiourea has been achieved. The rates are dependent on both clay mineral and thiourea. Amidosulfenyl radicals are believed to initiate the polymerization on the clay surface. The polymerization produced nonextractable clay-polymer adduct up to an extent of 70 wt %. The pH of the medium (in the acidic range) did not affect the polymerization rate.

Notes: Structural features of bhindi fiber have been studied by X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. The fiber has multicellular structure and on alkali treatment, it behaves like other lignocellulosic fibers. Infrared spectra indicated that alkali degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose was quite significant in the fiber and that substantial portion of uronic acid was removed as a results of alkali treatment.
