Notes: Abstract An experimental scheme is discussed, by which we can operate a CO laser at two individually selectable lines from the same gain tube. There are virtually no restrictions on the wavelength separation of the two lines within the manifold of the available lasing transitions. Experimental verifications of this scheme are described and the mutual influence of the simultaneous laser operation is discussed.

Notes: Summary Microwave irradiation has been shown to decrease the input resistance of snail neurons. In this study, we examined the role of extracellular calcium in triggering the microwave-induced enhancement of membrane conductance. Two sets of experiments were conducted. In the first set, nerve cells were superfused using Ringer solution with added Cd2+ (0.9 mM) which is a known blocker of calcium channels. In the second set, cells were superfused with low Ca2+ (0.7 mM) Ringer solution. Microwave irradiation was conducted at 2,450 MHz for 30 min with a specific absorption rate of 13 mW/g. It was found that 7 mM to 0.7 mM lowering of Ca2+ in bathing solution as well as blocking of calcium channels in neuronal membrane by means of Cd2+ did not influence the fall in membrane resistance induced by microwave radiation. In fact, the observed changed in membrane resistance in these experiments were nearly equal to those observed for neurons superfused by normal Ringer's. Thus, these results rule out the possible contribution of external Ca2+ in the observed microwave effect. Experiments with high Ca2+ solution also support this conclusion.

Notes: Summary The plasma and urine concentrations of famotidine, a new, potent H2-receptor antagonist, have been measured in 16 healthy young adults, 8 healthy elderly people and 18 patients with varying degrees of renal dysfunction after intravenous administration. Both the plasma elimination and renal excretion of famotidine were decreased in the elderly volunteers and renal patients. The renal clearance of famotidine averaged 4.43 ml/min/kg (310 ml/min) in normal young volunteers, which exceeded the mean creatinine clearance 1.55 ml/min/kg (109 ml/min), suggesting net secretion is a significant mechanism for elimination of famotidine. The ratio of famotidine renal clearance to creatinine clearance decreased as creatinine clearance decreased; these results suggest that the deterioration in the secretion process was much faster than that in glomerular filtration and are incompatible with the “intact nephron hypothesis”. Nevertheless, both total body clearance and renal clearance were significantly correlated with creatinine clearance. The apparent half-life was also significantly correlated with creatinine clearance. Since famotidine is essentially free of dose-related adverse effects, dose adjustment in patients with mild renal insufficiency and in elderly people is not required; however, either a prolonged dosing interval or a decrease in daily dose during long-term therapy may be adapted for the patients with severe renal insufficiency to avoid accumulation and the potential undesirable effects.

Notes: Abstract The slip behaviour of the zirconia/colloidal zirconia binder sol system has been characterized by rheological measurements. The effects of slip solid loading and methylcellulose polymer addition on rheology and on rheology as a function of ageing time have been examined. The optimum conditions for suitable slips used in the dip-coating process have been determined from the rheological properties of the slips.

Notes: Summary Early diplotene oocytes from Necturus maculosus ranging from ∼ 0.2 to 0.5 mm in diameter were examined by electron microscopy. In the smallest oocytes of this range, the cytoplasm is largely devoid of membranes, but contains primarily ribosomes and mitochondria. In slightly larger oocytes, smooth-surfaced cytomembranes first appear in the perinuclear cytoplasm. At this time, the outer layer of the germinal vesicle nuclear envelope (GVNE) shows frequent connections with long membranous lamellae that extend for considerable, but variable distances into the juxtanuclear ooplasm. The number of smooth membranous lamellae increases tremendously as the oocytes increase in diameter. In such oocytes as well, frequent continuities are observed between the outer membrane of the GVNE and many of the cytoplasmic membranes. Eventually, as the ooplasm becomes populated with extensive numbers of membranous lamellae, instances of continuity between the membranous lamellae and nuclear envelope now become sparse and eventually non-existent. The frequent connections observed between membranous lamellae and the outer membrane of the GVNE during a circumscribed interval of diplotene strongly implicate the GVNE in the generation of extensive amounts of cytoplasmic membrane. The ooplasm of larger oocytes in the size range indicated contain numerous Golgi complexes and large quantities of annulate lamellae most of which are positioned in the peripheral or subcortical ooplasm, as well as extensive quantities of smooth membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum and lipid droplets.

Notes: Abstract The resistanceR and the superconducting transition temperatureT c of Li1+x Ti2−x O4 has been investigated under pressure up to 150 kbar. TheT c is enhanced andR is suppressed by pressure. The results indicate that the superconductivity in this oxide system is ofd character associated with the Ti sublattice, and that the composition-induced disappearance of superconductivity is caused by the accompanying valence change of Ti ions rather than by the volume reduction.

Notes: Abstract The isothermal crystallization kinetics of poly(TMPS) has been measured by ISSAXS and results obtained for a molecular weight fraction (21,000) below the critical entanglement molecular weight (25,000) and another one above it (371,000). The SAXS intensity vs. time curves suggest that a single transformation mechanism exists. The SAXS long period is independent of crystallization time for both poly(TMPS) fractions. However the interlamellar thickness contribution to the long period is dependent upon molecular weight and crystallization temperature, increasing with temperature and molecular weight. The crystallite contribution also increases over the range studied. Both fractions exhibit a significant, but reversible decrease in thickness on cooling the sample from the crystallization temperature to room temperature and recyling again. The change is more pronounced for 371,000 specimen in keeping with its lower crystallinity. The path dependence of lamellar dimensions has significant implications in the morphological characterization of polymers annealed or crystallized at one temperature and then measured at another one.

Notes: Abstract The gradient diffusion parameterization of the Reynolds stress is modified by adding a bulk momentum transport term. Comparisons to available data indicate that this term accounts for the gusts or ‘downsweeps’ of higher momentum fluid into the canopy and ejections of lower momentum fluid out of the canopy. This term results in realistic mean wind speed profiles.

Notes: Abstract X-ray small-angle scattering of human normal and sickle cell deoxyhemoglobin in aqueous solution was measured at various concentrations, including those approximating the intracellular. The calculated radius of gyration, determination of the overall shape, and Soulé-Porod plots all indicate a concentration-dependent difference in strength of interparticle forces between normal and sickle cell samples at high concentration.

Notes: Abstract The Soret effect in dilute aqueous solutions of alkaline earth and nickel chlorides at 25°C has been investigated by the potentiometric method. The molar entropies of transport have been obtained from the measurements of the initial (homoheneous) and final (Soret steady-state) thermoelectric powers. The Soret coefficients at 0.005 M (molarity) have been calculated. The variation of the conventional ionic entropies of transport with the ionic radii is investigated and its possible implications for ionic hydration phenomena are discussed.
