Notes: Superconducting thin films of Y-Ba-Cu-O near the 1:2:3 stoichiometry were produced by simultaneous (coevaporation) and sequential (multilayer) evaporation in the same evaporator. The best film obtained on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) had a superconducting onset temperature of 104 K, a midpoint Tc of 92 K, and zero resistance at T≤74 K. Stoichiometry was deduced by inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy, and elemental depth profiles were obtained by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Film stoichiometry changes only near the film/substrate boundary for films on YSZ. Films on Si/SiO2 were not superconducting; depth profiling shows severe changes of film composition with depth. A major theme of this work is process reproducibility, which was found to be poor for coevaporation but improved considerably for sequential evaporation.

Notes: Thin films of the high-temperature superconductor Y-Ba-Cu-O with zero-resistance transition temperatures up to 83 K have been recently reported by using a zirconia buffer layer on the primary materials of interest for electronics, Si and SiO2. In this letter, various characteristics of these films are discussed. Microstructural analysis using transmission electron microscopy shows the complex morphology of the unoriented polycrystalline films. Elemental depth profiling by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy shows the effectiveness of the zirconia buffer layer in preventing interdiffusion; fluorine is found throughout the film at an abundance of 4 at. % The critical current density was measured as a function of temperature; its value is 5 kA cm−2 at 4.2 K.

Notes: This article seeks to clarify the meaning of ‘Japanisation’ in the British economic context, and distinguishes at least three variants: direct, mediated and permeated or full. It is argued that a more satisfactory analysis needs to take account of the interrelationships between economic structures, economic systems, organisational units and employment practices.

Notes: A pair of visible/near-UV spectrometers with eight viewing chords apiece have been installed on the DIII-D tokamak. Each system views a neutral heating beam and can acquire up to 250 complete spectra from each chord with 5–20-ms time resolution. Each viewing chord covers 60 A(ring) with 0.27-A(ring) spectral resolution, and the chords span about (2)/(3) of the plasma's full width. By viewing Doppler-broadened spectral lines from charge exchange recombination (CER) reactions between beam neutrals and plasma ions, ion temperatures up to 4 keV have been measured, and the bulk Doppler shift of these same lines has yielded plasma rotation velocities up to 200 km/s. The constancy of temperature on a magnetic flux surface and the rigid rotor model of a flux surface have been confirmed. These instruments have also been used to measure the neutral beam deposition profile, and preliminary experimental results agree with theoretical calculations of the beam deposition profile.

Notes: Single shot, multipoint ion temperature and plasma rotation profiles have been routinely obtained on the Doublet III tokamak for 32 consecutive time slices with 20-ms resolution. A six-chord tangentially viewing spectroscopic diagnostic has been built to look at radiation emitted by fully stripped low-Z impurity ions (He, C, O) that have undergone charge exchange recombination with hydrogen atoms from a 3-MW heating beam. The main components of the instrument are a single monochromator for wavelength dispersion, a single image intensifier tube for photon gain, and a pair of 1024-element linear photodiode arrays for detection. A special arrangement of fiber optics allows simultaneous data acquisition from all chords without the use of scanning mirrors or other moving parts. Ion temperature profiles taken under a variety of plasma conditions will be presented.

Notes: Ion temperature and rotation speed profiles will be measured spectroscopically on DIII-D using charge-exchange-induced excitation of spectral lines. Compared to the spectroscopic system used on Doublet III, the DIII-D system will have improved spatial and temporal resolution, reduced instrumental contribution to line broadening, and the capability to measure both toroidal and poloidal rotation.

Notes: An instrument has been developed to spectroscopically measure ion temperature and rotation speed spatial profiles in neutral-beam-heated tokamak plasmas. Up to eight spatial chords of data can be obtained for 32 time slices during a single discharge with selectable resolution times as short as 2 ms. A special arrangement of fiber optics allows simultaneous data acquisition from all chords without the use of scanning mirrors or other moving parts. Techniques used to analyze the data from the system are discussed.

Notes: This article challenges conventional theories on the role of NTBFs in the growth of new industries. Its‘community dynamics’approach is an alternative to the SPRU model of‘dynamic complementaries’and argues that while NTBFs are crucial, their capacity for employment generation is low.
