Notes: Abstract The substituted apatites Ca10(PO4)6(1−x)(VO4)6x (OH)2 and Pb10(PO4)6(1−x)(VO4)6x (OH)2, where x is the fraction of vanadate, were prepared in the powdered microcrystalline nature. The X-ray diffraction patterns and the infrared spectra of these substituted apatites were recorded. The analysis of the measurements established that the unit cell parameters did not vary smoothly with the degree of substitution as expected by the Vegard's Law. Two different types of linear behaviour in the two regions 0 to 50% and 50 to 100% were present. Hence, this implies the inadequacy of the Vegard's Law when applied to the whole range of substitutions.

Notes: Abstract A study of charged charm production is made at 400 GeV incident energy of protons in nuclear emulsion. A total of 7005 primary stars have been scrutinized to look for charm particle decays in the forward cone within a decay distance of 100–1,000 μm (3,056 stars) and 100–2,000 μm (3,949 stars). In all 10 charm candidates decaying to 3 charged particles plus neutrals have been observed. Background due to secondary interactions for events of such topology is estimated to be ≈3. Background due to strange particle decays is estimated to be negligible. The rest of the events are attributed toΛ c + andD ± decays. This leads to a value of 91±35 μb/nucleon for the total charged charm production cross section. Using production cross section forD ± from other experiments we obtainΛ c + production cross section as 62±27 μb/nucleon. Two cases of pair production of charm have been seen.

Notes: Abstract The new mass relation based on the generalised Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem has been used to obtain a relation for the fission barriers of three nuclei. This relation has been found satisfactory to describe the data. Further a general expression has been given describing satisfactorily the inner barrier height, the second minimum and the second barrier height for all actinides with an rms deviation of 0.32, 0.32 and 0.33 MeV respectively. The estimated shell energies agree reasonably well with those of Brack et al. In addition the barriers for thorium isotopes have been described well.

Notes: Abstract 40Ar-emulsion interactions are studied, to investigate the question of anomalons, in twoG- 5 emulsion stacks. In about 4600 primary interactions, projectile fragments of Z≧2 for all generations have been followed until they interact or leave the stack. After careful estimation of charges of these fragments, variation of their mean free paths is studied as a function of distance from the preceding interaction. Generation effect,N h dependence and production angle effect are investigated. In addition multi-chain events are analysed separately. Our results do not show anomalons at the 6% level and are consistent with non-occurrence of anomalons. However, this experiment is not sensitive enough to rule out anomalons (with a mfp of the order of 2 to 3 cm) produced at about 1% (or less) level.

Notes: Abstract The forward energy flow cross section is described in terms of the projectile-nucleon abrasion probability which is calculated in the impact parameter representation within the framework of the Glauber multiple scattering formalism. Realistic nuclear densities and the nucleon-nucleon inelastic cross section have been used in the calculation. The recent WA80 data are in reasonable agreement with the calculation. A simple relationship has been obtained between the abrased nucleons from the target and projectile and the zero degree energy.

Notes: Abstract The elementary reaction pp→nΔ + +, through which the6Li(p, Δ + +)6He reaction proceeds, is considered as the flip of spins and isospins of two quarks, one in each of the two quark bags of the interacting nucleons. Using the experimental data on the6Li(p, Δ + +)6He reaction at 1.04 GeV and the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) for the reaction mechanism, the strength of the spin-isospin quark-quark interaction is determined. It is found to be 70 MeV fm3.

Notes: Abstract Storage capacity-discharge relationships have been derived. These relationships can be used to predict the maximum storage capacity for the storage structures in subsurface drainage systems. Practical applications have been dealt with using field data representing situations in Indo-Gangetic Plains of India. Though the relationships can be useful for designing either a sump or an evaporation pond, it is inferred that the relationships developed are most effective in calculating the storage capacity of an evaporation pond. Conversely, with some trial and error, the relationships can also be used to calculate the area which can be commanded by an evaporation pond of a given capacity.

Notes: Abstract Five anionic polyelectrolytes were prepared with different molar ratios of acrylamide and acrylic acid monomers. The optimum flocculation conditions were found to depend on the polyelectrolyte and characteristics of the sample. The optimum time for flash mixing for alum and for polyelectrolytes was 1 to 2 min. The optimum flocculation time was 10 to 25 min and optimum flocculation intensity varied between 20 to 30 rpm. The pH was found to be inversely proportional to flocculation efficiency. The COD removal and coliform bacteria removal were 65 and 98%, respectively.

Notes: Abstract A study of physicochemical and biological treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater by the activated sludge process was performed in an oxidation ditch. The physicochemical study using different coagulants revealed that all the coagulants used are not effective and their doses required were very high for COD reduction. In the biological oxidation study, it was found that the wastewater could be processed at all organic loadings and phenol concentrations encountered in wastewater. The yield coefficient and decay coefficient were 0.75 (COD basis) and 0.01 day−1 (COD basis), respectively.
