Notes: Summary A cytochemical study of gastric K+-stimulated p-nitrophenylphosphatase (K-NPPase) activity, corresponding to a K+-stimulated phosphoprotein phosphatase of H-K-ATPase system, has been made by a new cytochemical method. Sections of fixed guinea pig gastric mucosa in a mixture of 2% paraformaldehyde and 0.25% glutaraldehyde, were incubated with the incubation medium (1.0 M glycine-0.1 M KOH buffer, pH 9.0, 2.5 ml; 1.1 M KCl, 0.5 ml; 10 mM lead citrate dissolved in 50 mM KOH, 4 ml; levamisole, 6.0 mg; dimethyl sulfoxide, 2.0 ml; 0.1 M p-nitrophenylphosphate (Mg-salt), 1.0 ml; ouabain, 73.0 mg) for 30 min at room temperature. Under a light microscope the specific gastric K-NPPase reaction was distributed only in the parietal cells of the fundic glands. The electron microscopic cytochemistry showed that the gastric K-NPPase activity was localized on the membrane lining the apical surfaces, secretory canaliculi and tubulovesicles. On the other hand, ouabain-sensitive K-NPPase activity (Na-K-ATPase) was demonstrated to localize only in the basolateral membrane of parietal cells with Mayahara's method. These findings support the interrelationships between the apical surface membrane, secretory canalicular membrane and tubulovesicles, and the functional differentiation of the membrane between the secretory membrane and basolateral membrane.

Notes: Abstract The copolymerization of maleic anhydride (MAn) with phenyl-4′-vinylphenylbutadiyne(PVPB) was carried out using 2, 2′-azobisisobutyronitrile as an initiator. Although PVPB does not homopolymerize by free radicals in solution, it copolymerized giving copolymers having average molecular weights up to 12,000, and consisting of slightly more PVPB units. The monomer reactivity ratios were estimated to be r (MAn)=0 and r (PVPB) =0.1–0.2. It was concluded that the copolymerization likely proceeds via a free monomer propagation mechanism rather than through a donor-acceptor complex mechanism.

Notes: Abstract Night airglow of oxygen 130.4 and 135.6 nm emissions was measured by a spectrophotometer aborad an S520 sounding rocket, launched at 19:50 JST (10:50 UT) on 14 February, 1982 from Kagoshima, Japan. The altitude variation of the emissions was obtained from 110 to 266 km at zenith angles of 35.5°±4°. The emission intensity around 260 km was about 160R and is roughly compatible with model calculations taking account of O++e − radiative recombination as well as O+−O− mutual neutralization. Some excess of about 50R, compared to the model calculation, was observed around 200 km. Possible explanations of the excess are: (i) remnant oxygen ions during the transition period from day to night and (ii) diffuse radiation from the background sky. Model calculations taking account of remnant oxygen ions were also performed by adding an excess electron density to the original density profile. However, it was found that an unreasonably large electron density is required around 200 km (∼5×105 cm−3) to produce the observed intensity. It is also probable that some contribution from the background sky is present in the observed intensity.

Notes: Abstract The crystal structure of copper(II)mellitate, Cu3.5C12H29O27, has been determined by X-ray analysis. The complex crystallizes in the orthorhombic space groupIba2, with unit-cell dimensionsa=19.274(3),b=21.054(7),c=12.956(4) Å. The structure was deduced by the direct method with the help of the Patterson method and refined by the block-diagonal least-squares technique to a finalR value of 0.037 for 2995 observed reflections. Among six carboxyl groups of mellitic acid, five groups lose protons and form coordinate bonds to four copper atoms, and the remaining group forms hydrogen bonds to the water of crystallization and coordinated water. The configuration around copper is distorted-pyramidal, with the Cu-O bond distances of 1.896(7) to 2.425(7) Å.

Notes: Abstract Excess volumes, excess isentropic compressions and excess isobaric heat capacities for binary liquid mixtures of methanol with ethanol, 1-propanol and 1-butanol have been determined at 25° C. These thermodynamic functions are smaller than those for alkanol + water mixtures and are correlated with the difference in the alkyl chain length in two of the alkanol molecules. The behavior of the component molecules in solution is found to be similar to that in the pure liquid. The excess isentropic compressions of methanol + 1-butanol show an S-shaped concentration dependence with a positive lobe in the methanol rich range and a negative lobe in the methanol poor range, which resembles that of the excess Gibbs energy reported by Polak et al.

Notes: Summary It was found that some ciliates,Stentor, Spirostomum andBlepharisma, which can contract rapidly like the stalks of Vorticellidae, have Ca2+-binding proteins that are very similar to spasmins, in the immunological sense. The presence of spasmins in other Protozoa and in some Metazoa was also investigated.

Notes: Abstract A geographical difference in reproductive status of moths in populations of C. medinalis Guénée was recognized in autumn paddy fields of north Kyushu, south-west Japan. This geographical variation in mating frequency of the population resembled the intensity of immigrant density in early summer: the proportion of mated females in the population was high in the west coast regions of Kyushu and low in inland areas. Light trap catches of moths in 1985 suggested overseas invasions from China in the autumn to westerly regions of north Kyushu. The potential autumn immigrations of moths in ripening paddy fields would satisfactorily explain the variations in reproductive status of moths with locality in the same season. These migrations are apparently non-adaptive because immigrants or their progeny would soon be killed at harvest or from cold weather.

Notes: Abstract A systematic description is developed for the dynamical behavior of a multi-mode unidirectional ring laser under modulation of the population inversion in a homogeneously broadened active medium. The modulation frequency is chosen to be close to the longitudinal mode spacing in the cavity. We report a rigorous and extensive numerical analysis of this system by choosing the dc component of the population inversion, the modulation amplitude and the detuning of the modulation frequency as control parameters for both cases of good and bad cavities. In the good cavity, this system exhibits two characteristic transitions toward the conventional mode-locked pulse oscillation as the modulation amplitude increases: the first transition to the region of the ordered amplitude and disordered phase of the electric field, and the second one to the ordinary mode-locking in which both the amplitude and the phase are ordered. In the bad cavity, two kinds of chaos are observed: the Lorenz-type chaos in the region of weak modulation and strong population inversion and the quasi-periodic chaos in the region of strong modulation and intermediate population inversion. The dimensionality of chaotic behaviors is also tested to reveal mechanisms of instability. The coherent and incoherent properties of emitted light at each region are clarified, too.
