Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Auf zwei verschiedene Arten hergestellte Molybdäntrioxidkatalysatoren wurden für selektive Oxidationen untersucht.
Notes: Summary As catalysts for selective oxidation, molybdenum trioxide catalysts—prepared by two different methods—have been investigated. The results of vapor-phase oxidation of methanol are discussed on the basis of the acidic property, oxidizing functions, and the crystallographic structure of the catalysts. It was found that the acidic property is not the sole factor deciding the catalytic activity. Electrical conductivity measurements proved that molecular oxygen in the gas feed is necessary for maintaining the catalysts active. The difference in the catalytic activity and selectivity were reasonably interpreted in view of the structure sensitivity of those catalysts. A redox mechanism is also discussed in this paper.

Notes: Abstract The dielectric constant, dc resistance, D-E ferroelectric hysteresis loop and dilatometric analysis of the three phases I, II, and III of AgNO3 single crystals has been studied over the temperature range 100–200° C. A ferroelectric behaviour of the metastable phase III was detected here for the first time similar to what happened in KNO3. The ferroelectric is attributed here to Ag+-ion vacancy formation in the unit cell of AgNO3. The energy activating the process of vacancy formation was found to beE v=2.6 eV. It was found that an ionic shift from one lattice point to another requires an amount of energy to overcome a potential barrierE m=0.1 eV. A model is suggested to explain such behaviour. Dilatometric analysis indicated that this metastable phase transition I→II is accompanied by an expansion of the unit cell.

Notes: Abstract Porous and granular materials often defy an accurate description which would identify them. Property values for such media reported in the literature can then serve as guides only and a user of such material who needs accurate property values has to obtain them by measurement on a sample of the specific material with which he is concerned. It is the purpose of the present paper to describe a device by which specific heat, heat conductivity, and thermal diffusivity of particulate materials can be measured rapidly and accurately. The sample has an annular cylindrical shape, and is heated with a uniform heat flux on its inside and outside surfaces. The analysis performed has resulted in closed form expressions for the properties in terms of the measured variables in the quasi-steady state regime. An apparatus was designed and manufactured to verify the analysis. The conductivity of dry sand obtained by this method agrees with that measured in a steady state test within 2.17%.

Notes: Summary The mature pollen of Larix leptolepis Gord. (Conifer) contains five different cell types, and the plasma membrane of the vegetative cell is continuous and organized. The pollen wall is composed of two morphologically and cytochemically distinct domains: the exine and the intine. In the multilayered exine, the ektexine appears granular and the endexine, lamellar. The intine is thick and bilayered with a microfibrillar structure occupying its inner portion. Cytochemical reactions of the exine and the intine are similar to those found in angiosperms. Pollen wall involvement in the male female recognition system is discussed with respecl to the angiosperms.

Notes: Abstract These experiments are concerned with individual behavior under risk and under uncertainty. By exploiting the ‘isolation effect’ the experiments were able to offer to 134 subjects the possibility of actually gaining or losing an important sum of money. The experimental data show that under risk as well as under complete ignorance the subjects' attitudes towards prospects of gains and towards prospects of losses are totally unrelated. The data also show that when facing prospects of gains, the subjects generally take the exact probabilities of the events into account, whereas, when facing prospects of losses many of then have only recourse to coarser categories of plausibility, or even no longer use their information at all.

Notes: Abstract A new population of Mus musculus domesticus showing Robertsonian translocations (2n = 22) has been identified in Tunisia. Mice carried 9 pairs of Robertsonian translocations: Rb(1.11), Rb(2.16), Rb(3.12), Rb(4.6), Rb(5.14), Rb(7.18), Rb(8.9), Rb(10.17) and Rb(13.15). Five of the nine translocations are not known to occur elsewhere. In two populations only 2n = 22 mice were present, whereas in a third one a mixture of karyotypes (2n = 22, 38, 39, 40) was found. The slight electrophoretic differentiation observed for other Robertsonian populations as well as the hybrid nature of the karyotypically heterogeneous populations are confirmed. Allele frequency differences between the 2n = 22 and 2n = 40 mice in the latter population show that local electrophoretic differentiation exists and allow to compare chromosome flow and gene flow. The presence of a chromosome-1 polymorphism for additional fragments of heterochromatin present in the Robertsoman population provides a convenient marker of recombinational events in the hybrid zone.
