Notes: Abstract In view of the possible application in non-aqueous líthium cells operating at relatively high temperatures, molten dimethylsulphone (DMSO2) has been used as the electrolyte solvent in lithium cells at 150°C. The stability of lithium in molten DMSO2 has been found to be good as compared with that observed in organic solvents such as propylene carbonate, thus indicating that the Li+/Li system can be used as a suitable reference electrode in this medium. The electrochemical behaviour of some transition metal oxides has been investigated in LIClO4 solutions in molten DMSO2. The results obtained from voltammetric and chronopotentiometric measurements have shown a satisfactory behaviour for all the cathodic materials tested. Moreover, electrochemical insertion of Li+ ions into the crystal lattice of these oxides is a very fast process. Thus molten DMSO2 appears to be a very interesting organic solvent usable in high energy density non-aqueous lithium cells.

Notes: Abstract The CD3OH molecule has been investigated for new far-infrared laser lines by optically pumping with a cw waveguide CO2 laser. The increased tunability (300 MHz) with respect to a conventional CO2 laser permits to pump many new CD3OH lines. As a consequence 108 new laser lines have been discovered, ranging from 42.9 to 1155 μm in wavelength. On some lines the effect of an electric Stark field has been investigated demonstrating a laser frequency tuning. The total number of known FIR laser lines from CD3OH is increased to about 340 making this molecule the most prolific together with CH3OH.

Notes: Abstract We have found twelve new FIR laser lines in12CH3OH and thirty three in13CH3OH. Both molecules were pumped by a regular cw CO2 laser. We have also assigned 2013CH3OH laser lines to specific rotational energy levels in the excited C-O stretchhindered rotation combined states

Notes: Abstract FIR laser lines close to the N+ 3 P 2−3 P 1 transition at 122 μm can be used as a local oscillator for heterodyne detectors. The frequencies of some candidate laser lines from CH2F2,13CH3OH, CD3OD, and CD3OH have been measured and the output power of the most interesting lines has been optimized.

Notes: Abstract This work reports 83 new optically pumped far infrared laser lines, using deuterated methyl alcohol, CHD2OH, as active medium. For each line we list the measured wavelength, its polarization relative to the pump line, the optimum gas pressure and the CO2 laser pump power at the maximum absorption.

Notes: Abstract The12CH3 18OH molecule has been investigated for new far-infrared laser lines by optically pumping it with a cw waveguide CO2 laser. The larger tunability (318 MHz) with respect to a conventional CO2 laser permits the pumping of many12CH3 18OH lines. As a consequence 100 new laser lines have been discovered, ranging from 34.6 μm to 653.2 μm in wavelength. The infrared spectrum of12CH3 18OH has been observed and all the fundamental vibration energies measured.

Notes: Summary A 2810 by DNA fragment containing the beta-isopropylmalate dehydrogenase gene of the dimorphic yeast Yarrowia lipolytica has been sequenced. The sequence contains an open reading frame of 405 codons, predicting a protein of 43,366 molecular weight. Protein sequence homology with the polypeptide encoded by the LEU2 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae is 64%, whereas DNA sequence homology is 61%. The 5′- and 3′-flanking regions of the Y. lipolytica LEU2 gene share only some general structural features common to genes of S. cereviside such as the presence and location of TATA boxes, CAAT boxes, CACACA repeats, the lack of G residues in the 5′-untranslated region and 3′-transcription terminators. Transcription of a 1.4 kb mRNA begins at a small cluster of sites approximately 40 base pairs before the initial ATG.

Notes: Summary 4(5)-D-Arabinotetrahydroxybutylimidazoline-2-thione, THBIT, is proposed as a new reagent for the spectrophotometric determination of Pd(II). Pd(II) forms 1∶1, 1∶2 and 1∶4 complexes with THBIT. The system conforms to Beer's law up to 5μg/ml palladium concentration in aqueous medium (molar absorptivity, 1.99×104 l· mole−1·cm−1 at 338 nm). The most serious interference is from Hg(II), Os(VIII), Ru(IV), Cr(VI), V(V) and S2O3 2−. The method has been used successfully for the determination of palladium in catalysts and synthetic samples.

Notes: Summary Derivatives of Imidazole as Spectrophotometric Analytical Reagents The synthesis, characteristics and metal-ion reactions of three imidazole derivatives, namely 4(5)-D-arabinotetrahydroxybutylimidazoline-2-thione (THBIT), and the oxime (IMALOX) and rhodanine (IMAR) of 4(5)-imidazolecarboxaldehyde, have been studied. IMALOX and IMAR exhibit three pK values in aqueous solution, but THBIT exhibits only one. All the reagents form stable complexes with only a small number of cations and some of them show promise as Spectrophotometric reagents.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The optimization approach for elastoplastic analysis is discussed showing that some minimum principles related to numerical methods can be derived by means of duality and penalization procedures. Three minimum principles for velocity and plastic multiplier rate fields are presented in the framework of perfect plasticity. The first one is the classical Greenberg formulation. The second one, due to Capurso in rates and to Maier in finite terms, is developed here with different motivation, and modified by penalization of constraints so as to arrive at a third principle for rates. The counterparts of these optimization formulations in terms of discrete increments of displacements and plastic multipliers are discussed. The third one of these minimum principles for finite increments is recognized to be closely related to Maier's formulation of holonomic plasticity.
