Notes: In the presence of catalytic amounts of organoantimony(V) halides such as Ph4SbI, Ph4SbBr, Ph3SbBr2, and Ph3SbCl2, the cycloaddition of aziridines 1a-g with heterocumulenes (phenyl isothiocyanate, carbon disulfide, and carbon dioxide) selectively gave ring-expanded cycloadducts 3a-d, f, g, and 6e by α-cleavage of the aziridine rings.

Notes: Three active p-aminobenzenesulfonic acid derivatives, 1-(p-aminobenzenesulfonyl)imidazole (4a), 1-(p-aminobenzenesulfonyloxy)benzotriazole (4b), and 2-phenyl-4-(p-aminobenzenesulfonyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazoline-5-thione (4c) were synthesized by reacting p-isocyanatobenzenesulfonyl chloride (1) with stoichiometrical quantities of water in the presence of dibutyltin didodecanoate and subsequently with imidazole, 1-hydroxybenzotriazole and 2-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazoline-5-thione, respectively. The self-polycondensation of 4a-c, leading to poly(p-benzenesulfonamide) (7), was carried out in solution using polar aprotic solvents, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and hexamethylphosphoric triamide (HMPA), and acidic media, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and m-cresol, with or without an appropriate acid catalyst or acid acceptor under mild conditions. Poly(p-benzenesulfonamide) having the highest reduced viscosity of 0,14 dl·-1 was obtained almost quantitatively from 4c by using m-cresol as a solvent without any acid catalyst and acid acceptor at 25°C. The polymers are soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as NMP, HMPA and DMSO and in aqueous sodium hydroxide. These poly(p-benzenesulfonamide)s are less thermally stable than completely aromatic polyamides, because the initial weight-loss started at 250-350°C. Aminolysis of three benzenesulfonic acid derivatives, 1-benzenesulfonylimidazole (5a), 1-benzenesulfonyloxybenzotriazole (5b), and 2-phenyl-4-benzenesulfonyl-1,3,4-oxadiazoline-5-thione (5c), with the same leaving groups was also carried out as a model reaction of self-polycondensation to determine the reaction conditions.

Notes: An apparatus for continuous preparative method of polymer beads was investigated. Monomer droplets formed in glycerol were continuously introduced to a rotating glass tube which was filled with warmed glycerol and polymerized. Polymer beads of around 4 mm diameter were obtained. As an application of the polymer beads, urease was immobilized on the beads and their properties were evaluated. Macroreticular type of beads prepared with a mixture of maleic anhydride, styrene, and divinylbenzene showed the highest enzymatic activity among the beads tested, and the urease immobilized beads could be successfully applied for determination of blood urea nitrogen in human sera.

Notes: Poly[acryloyl-L-valine (ALV)] microspheres containing peroxy ester groups were prepared by radical copolymerization of ALV with a small amount of di-tert-butyl peroxyfumarate. When the microspheres were irradiated in the presence of second vinyl monomers, long-lived propagating radicals of the second monomers were formed in the microspheres by the reaction of microsphere polymer radicals with the monomers. The presence of a minute quantity of ethyl alcohol served to soften the microspheres and made the polymer radicals more mobile in the microspheres. As a result, sharper ESR spectra of the propagating radicals were observed although their lifetimes became shorter. This microsphere method also yielded easily the stable propagating radicals of a-methylstyrene and 1,1-diphenylethylene which have no homopolymerizability in usual radical polymerization. When N-n-propyldimethacroylamide and N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-dimethacroylhydrazine, which undergo cyclopolymerization, were used as second monomer, uncyclized polymer radicals were only observed. Some discussions were given on the propagation mechanism of the cyclopolymerization.

Notes: Polyaromatic ether-ketones prepared from isophthaloyl dichloride, diphenyl ether, and various amounts of biphenylene and its derivative, were compressed to films under various conditions, and their crosslinking behaviors were studied. Although strong and flexible films could be obtained from low melting crosslinkable polymers, the low molecular weight polymers, which melt below 300°C, decompose at the biphenylene ring opening temperature of over 290°C, giving films full of gas bubbles. The addition of metal complexes to decrease the biphenylene ring opening temperature did not improve the film quality, although gas bubbles could be avoided. The strong and flexible films were amorphous, and the brittle films were mixtures of crystalline and amorphous polymers.

Notes: The free radical polymerization of vinyl monomers such as styrene, methylmethacrylate, methyacrylate, acrylonitrile, vinylacetate, etc. in the presence of diphenylbutadiyne, was investigated. Both rates of polymerization and molecular weights of polymer decreased by the addition of diphenylbutadiyne. The degree of retardation depended on the stability of propagating radicals. The butadiyne does not react with the propagating radicals having high Q values, but it seems to trap the radicals temporarily thus retarding the polymerization

Notes: Successful chromatograms were obtained for trifluoroacetylated nylon 12 (N-TFA-N) in gel permeation chromatography (GPC) with dichloromethane as eluent. It was confirmed that the method of universal calibration was applicable for N-TFA-N and polystyrene. The average molecular weights of nylon 12 were obtained from the chromatogram of N-TFA-N by use of the calibration curve for polystyrene. The stability of N-TFA-N in solution was examined from various angles. Satisfactory results are obtained, if the sample solution is measured within 48 h after preparation.

Notes: Reduction of aromatic aldehydes by benzeneselenol is found to be promoted by molecular oxygen to give corresponding alcohols in good yields. No reduction took place without oxygen.A free radical process involving SH2 reaction at the selenium atom is proposed where the phenylseleno radical attacks the selenium atom of selenohemiacetal, the adduct of benzeneselenol to aldehyde, to give the ketyl radical which then abstracts hydrogen from benzeneselenol. The intermediacy of selenohemiacetal is supported by a quantitative reduction of α-methoxybenzyl phenyl selenide, which is used as a model compound of the intermediate.
