    Notes: The question of convergence of the solution of the exterior Dirichlet boundary value problem of the first order system of linearized acoustics as the frequency ω tends to zero is considered. The particular difficulty of having zero as an eigenvalue is handled by introducing certain scalar characteristics that  -  if prescribed  -  imply uniqueness in the limit case ω = 0. Convergence to the static solution in a weighted L2-space is shown. Eventually the convergence result obtained can be extended to a larger class of boundary value problems of Mathematical Physics due to the structure of the argument.

    Notes: We consider solving linear, second order, elliptic partial differential equations with boundary conditions of types Dirichlet (DIR), mixed (MIX), and nearly Neumann (Neu) by using software modules that implement five numerical methods (one finite element and four finite differences). They represent both the new generation of improved methods and the traditional ones; they are: Hermite collocation plus band Gauss elimination (HC), ordinary finite differences plus band Gauss elimination (5P), ordinary finite differences with Dyaknov iteration (DY), DY with Richardson extrapolation to achieve fourth order convergence (D4), and ordinary finite differences with multigrid iteration (MG). We carry out a performance evaluation in which we measure the grid size and the computer time needed to achieve three significant digits of accuracy in the solution. We compute the changes in these two measures as we change boundary condition types from DIR to MIX and MIX to NEU and then test the following hypotheses: (i) the performance of all the modules is degraded by introducing the derivative terms into the boundary conditions; (ii) finite element collocation (HC) is least affected; (iii) the fourth order modules (HC and D4) are less affected than the other second order modules; and (iv) the traditional 5-point finite differences (5P) are most affected. We establish these hypotheses with high levels of confidence by using several sample problems. The most significant conclusion is that a high order collocation method is preferred for problems with general operators and derivatives in the boundary conditions. We also establish with considerable confidence that these modules have the following rankings in absolute comparative time performance: MG (best), HC and D4, DY, and 5P (worst).

    Notes: We establish here the convergence (thereby proving the existence) of a semi-discrete scheme for the quasilinear hyperbolic equation where x ∊ Rn, t ∊ [0,T], and φ ∊ L∞ (Rn). It is well known that the above problem does not necessarily have global classical solutions and the usual concepts of weak solution. do not lead to a unique solution The existence of a unique solution to the above problem in a suitable sense was established in [3], where a parabolic problem obtained by introducing the term -∊Δu was studied and then the behavior as ∊ → 0 was discussed. A difference scheme approach to a problem of the above type where φi does not depend on x and t and Ψ does not depend on u was also studied in [2]. The aim of this paper is to present a proof for the case when φ depends on x, Ψ depends on u, and the technical complications in this case are nontrivial. The discussions in this paper my be considered as continuation of the ideas in the above papers.

    Notes: We present a nine-point fourth-order finite difference method for the nonlinear second-order elliptic differential equation Auxx + Buyy = f(x, y, u, ux, uy) on a rectangular region R subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions u(x, y) = g(x, y) on ∂R. We establish, under appropriate conditions O(h4)-convergence of the finite difference scheme. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the method and its fourth-order convergence.

    Notes: The construction of upper and lower bounds to the bilinear quantity g0, f, where f is the solution of an operator equation Tf = f0, requires either an approximation for f or one for T-1. In this paper the question of “best” approximation of T-1 by an operator of the form B = βI, where β is a real constant, is investigated for linear operators that are either self-adjoint or can be related by suitable manipulations to others that are. Particular attention is paid to a special operator, previously studied by Robinson, of importance in predicting the dynamic polarisabilities of quantum-mechanical systems.
