    Notizen: Abstract— Near-threshold fatigue crack growth and crack closure were investigated in a nodular cast iron. Fracture surface roughness was promoted by spheroidal graphites. The spheroidal graphites are partially crushed to form powder which accumulates within the crack and thus enhance crack closure. The marked influence of stress ratio on near-threshold crack growth is due to graphite-induced crack closure. When the contribution of graphite-induced crack closure is excluded, the crack growth characteristics are insensitive to stress ratio, and the threshold behaviour for crack growth tends to disappear. In this case, Young's modulus becomes a controlling material parameter for the power law relationship between crack growth rate and stress intensity range.

    Notizen: The growth characteristics of small fatigue cracks were studied under rotary bending in a low carbon steel prepared with two ferrite grain sizes of 24 and 84 μm, and were compared with the growth characteristics of large through cracks in fracture mechanics type specimens. The effect of microstructure on crack growth rates and the interaction in growth behaviour between two neighboring small cracks were examined experimentally, and also the critical crack lengths above which linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is applicable were evaluated for small crack growth and for fatigue crack thresholds. It is found that small cracks grow much faster than large ones and also show growth rate perturbations due to grain boundaries. It is indicated that the critical crack lengths for fatigue crack thresholds are significantly shorter than those for small crack growth.

    Notizen: Abstract— The growth characteristics of small fatigue cracks were investigated under rotary bending in a high tensile strength steel, and the critical crack length above which linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is applicable was evaluated systematically from the results of the present study and previous studies in which two steels having different microstructures and strengths were used. It is found that the critical crack length extends over two regions each exhibiting different growth mechanisms. These regions of microstructurally small cracks and mechanically small cracks are found to be a unique function of the microstructural unit size and the yield strength of the materials, respectively. Therefore, using these relationships, it is possible to estimate the critical crack length for a given material.

    Notizen: Abstract Germination responses of Taraxacum platycarpum seeds to temperature were examined under laboratory conditions to investigate the emergence-season choice mechanism of the seeds. Almost all the newly collected seeds were non-dormant. Under constant temperature conditions, maximum percentage germination (approximately 90%) was attained at temperatures 6–16°C, where simple linear relationships were observed between the temperature and the rates of germination, i.e. the reciprocals of the time taken to germinate by seed subpopulations with 10–80% germination. Thermal time required for germination of the subpopulations ranged from 600 Kh (degree Kelvin × hours) to 1500 Kh with a relatively constant base temperature of about 2.5°C. Lower limit temperature for germination was slightly below 6°C. Higher limit temperature for germination has the normal distribution with the mean ±SD of 19±2.5°C. Pre-exposure of imbibed seeds to temperatures higher than the higher limit temperature for germination, 25 and 30°C, had no effect on the germinability and the rate of germination at a circa-optimum temperature. Moist chilling treatment at 4°C caused an increase in the variation of germination rate within the seed population, but no evidence for dormancy-inducing or breaking effects was obtained.

    Notizen: The growth characteristics of small fatigue cracks were investigated under rotary bending in a low alloy steel prepared with two prior austenite grain sizes of 15 μm (fine grain) and 91 μm (coarse grain). The influence of grain boundaries on crack growth rate and the crack aspect ratio was examined, and the critical crack length above which linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) is applicable was evaluated for a growing small crack. When the surface crack length is shorter than three grain diameters (3d), crack growth rates decrease near the grain boundaries. Aspect ratios are also affected by the microstructure and thus vary widely. Cracks longer than 3d are not influenced by the microstructure, but they grow faster than would be expected based on LEFM until their lengths reach 3d+ 150 μm. This behaviour may be attributed to the difference in crack closure between small cracks and large cracks. If the contribution of crack closure to the growth of small cracks can be established experimentally or analytically, the critical crack length above which LEFM is applicable would be 3d. However, because it is difficult to evaluate crack closure, 3d+ 150 μm is considered to be the critical crack length for engineering applications.

    Notizen: Mettwurst and Bologna sausage were produced from pork using enzymatically modified gelatin (EMG-8), which had been produced with covalent attachment of L-leucine n-octyl ester. EMG-8 improved spreadability, smoothness and softness of the Mettwurst. With the addition of EMG-8, the texture of the Bologna sausage was kept soft over a 1 to 7 day period of storage at 4°C or 2 to 4 weeks of storage at -20°C. Microscopic observation showed that fat globules in the Bologna sausage produced with EMG-8 were more homogeneously distributed than those in a control Bologna sausage.

    Notizen: Abstract An ethylene-forming enzyme which forms ethylene from 2-oxo-4-methylthiobutyric acid (KMBA) was purified to an electrophoretically homogeneous state from a cell-free extract of Cryptococcus albidus IFP 0939. The presence of KMBA, NADH, Fe(III) chelated to EDTA and oxygen were essential for the formation of ethylene. When ferric ions, as Fe(III)EDTA, in the reaction mixture were replaced by Fe(II)EDTA under aerobic conditions, the non-enzymatic formation of ethylene was observed. Under anaerobic conditions in the presence of Fe(III)EDTA and NADH, the enzyme reduced 2 mol of Fe(III) with 1 mol of NADH to give 2 mol of Fe(II) and 1 mol NAD+, indicating that the ethylene-forming enzyme is an NADH-Fe(III)EDTA oxidoreductase. The role of NADH:Fe(III)EDTA oxidoreductase activity in the formation in vivo ethylene from KMBA is discussed.
