    Notes: TOL plasmid PWWO of Pseudomonas putida contains two operons that specify a pathway for the degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons. The ‘upper’ operon encodes enzymes for the oxidation of toluene to benzoate and xylenes to toluates, whereas the meta-cleavage operon specifies the further oxidation of benzoate and toluates. Transcription of the upper pathway operon (s positively regulated by the XylR protein, which is activated by toluene/xylenes and their alcohol catabolic products, in combination with the NtrA protein, a sigma factor. Expression of the meta-operon is positively controlled by the XylS protein which is activated by meta-pathway substrates, and is Independent of NtrA protein. Expression of the meta pathway is also Induced by toluene/xylene-activated XylR protein via a cascade regulatory system in which this protein in combination with NtrA protein stimulates transcription from the xylS gene promoter. Hyper-production of XylS protein in turn provokes high level expression of the meta-operon, which is independent of meta-pathway substrates. The two promoters, which are activated by the XylR and NtrA proteins, the upper pathway promoter and the xylS gene promoter, exhibit three regions of homology centred at –12(5′–TTGCTÃG–3′), –24(5′ -TGGCPuT –3) and –45(5′-TTAAATÃGPuPuGCGPuTc-3′), with respect to their principal transcription initiation points. The possible physiological significance of activated XylR-protein-induced expression of the meta-operon through amplification of XylS protein levels is considered.

    Notes: The dielectric relaxation behavior of a nonaligned and an aligned liquid-crystalline (LC) polymer are reported for the ranges 10-3.5 to 105 Hz and 274-363 K. Multiple processes (δ and α) are observed that follow a Vogel equation for the temperature dependence related to the apparent glass transition temperature. The occurrence of these processes and the variation in their relaxation strengths as sample alignment is changed is interpreted in terms of a molecular theory for the dielectric behavior of a LC polymer that involves the director order parameter Sd, the mesophase order parameter S, the dipole moment components of the mesogenic head groups, and their associated relaxation functions.

    Notes: A variety of time-linearization, quasilinearization, operator-splitting, and implicit techniques which use compact or Hermitian operators has been developed for and applied to one-dimensional reaction-diffusion equations. Compact operators are compared with second-order accurate spatial approximations in order to assess the accuracy and efficiency of Hermitian techniques. It is shown that time-linearization, quasilinearization, and implicit techniques which use compact operators are less accurate than second-order accurate spatial discretizations if first-order approximations are employed to evaluate the time derivatives. This is attributed to first-order accurati temporal truncation errors. Compact operator techniques which use second-order temporal approximations are found to be more accurate and efficient than second-order accurate, in both space and time, algorithms. Quasilinearization methods are found to be more accurate than time-linearization schemes. However, quasilinearization techniques are less efficient because they require the inversion of block tridiagonal matrices at each iteration. Some improvements in accuracy can be obtained by using partial quasilinearization and linearizing each equation with respect to the variable whose equation is being solved. Operator-splitting methods which use compact differences to evaluate the diffusion operator were found to be less accurate than operator-splitting procedures employ second-order accurate spatial approximations. Comparisons among the methods presented in this paper are shown in terms of the L2-norm errors and computed wave speeds for a variety of time steps and grid spacings: The numerical efficiency is assessed in terms of the CPU time required to achieve the same accuracy.

    Notes: A system of reaction-diffusion equations which governs the propagation of an ozone decomposition laminar flame in Lagrangian co-ordinates is analysed by means of compact operators and modified equation methods. It is shown that the use of fourth-order accurate compact operators yields very accurate solutions if sufficient numbers of grid points are located at the flame front, where very steep gradients of temperature and species concentrations exist. Modified equation methods are shown to impose a restriction on the time step under certain conditions. The solutions obtained by means of compact operators and modified equation methods are compared with solutions obtained by other methods; good agreement is obtained.

    Notes: An adaptive finite element method is developed and applied to study the ozone decomposition laminar flame. The method uses a semidiscrete, linear Galerkin approximation in which the size of the elements is controlled by an integral which minimizes the changes in mesh spacing. The sizes and locations of the elements are controlled by the location and magnitude of the largest temperature gradient. The numerical results obtained with this adaptive finite element method are compared with those obtained using fixed-node finite-difference schemes and an adaptive finite-difference method. It is shown that the adaptive finite element method developed here using 36 elements can yield as accurate flame speeds as fourth-order accurate, fixed-node, finite-difference methods when 272 collocation points are employed in the calculations.

    Notes: Myelin membrane and its proteolipid protein (PLP) have been examined by infrared and Raman spectroscopy to provide information about the secondary structure of proteins and conformation of lipid chains. Splitting of the amide I modes in the vibrational spectra and locations of amide A, I, II, III and V bands indicate that the polypeptide arrangement in both membrane systems is mainly helical. The β-form is also present, its amount being higher in PLP. Raman spectra in the C—C and C—H stretching regions show significant differences concerning intra- and inter-chain lipid order, which is greater in PLP.

    Notes: Raman spectra of seven commercial poly(methyl methacrylate) intraocular lenses (IOLs) before and after implantation in the anterior chamber of rabbit eyes are reported and discussed in order to assess their biocompatibility.The material does not seem to change its structure on implantation; in particular the level of residual monomer, which is the main factor responsible for the biological intolerance of the lenses, remains constant.Providing a non-destructive structural probe, Raman spectroscopy is a suitable method for monitoring the biocompatibility of ophthalmological materials.
