Notes: Abstract Digital image processing is emerging as an increasingly important modality in the evolution of different types of image acquisition and analysis in cardiology. It has become an integral element in the technologies that are being developped and explored. New mathematical concepts in the assessment of cardiac function have been applied to digital images of the heart. Among them, the measurement of temporal changes in regional wall motion of the heart using Fourier analysis led to a significant improvement in the detection of regional alterations of ventricular function. Several imaging modalities can benefit from this approach for the assessment of the temporal sequence of cardiac wall motion.

Notes: Abstract Replacement of dolomite rhombs is zone selective in Cracow-Silesian Zn-Pb deposits. The discussed replacement of dolomite by sphalerite occurs as spotted sphalerite ore constituting about one-fourth of the economic sulfide mineralization of the Pomorzany Mine. Replacement is controlled by two factors, i.e., microporosity and chemical composition. The epigenetic host dolomite rhombs are zoned into three main zones, i.e., the outer rhombohedral rim which is hard and Fe rich with remarkable Zn content, the inner zone which is porous and Zn rich but usually low in Fe content, and the core of the dolomite rhombs which is Fe free but may contain some Zn. Zones rich in Zn were the first to be replaced by sphalerite; the same holds true for zones with higher microporosity showing a high degree of crystallographic disorder of cations. The other zones seem to be intact. There are four successive replacement stages, i.e., partial, moderate, intense, and advanced. During replacement the intact parts become more Zn-rich, consequently being replaced completely in the later stages, the greater the zinc content in the host dolomite is, the more reactive it is to replacement by sphalerite. The liberated iron from replaced Fe-rich zones is fixed as finely crystalline pyrite.

Notes: Abstract Arsenic uptake from water and from phytoplankton was followed in the copepod Eurytemora affinis and the barnacle Balanus improvisus collected from the Patuxent River estuary, Chesapeake Bay, eastern coast of the USA in 1987, and in the oyster Crassostrea virginica obtained from a hatchery on the shore of Chesapeake Bay in 1987. Dissolved arsenic was readily taken up by phytoplankton and by shell material of B. improvisus and C. virginica; however, no dissolved arsenic was incorporated into the invertebrate tissues. When E. affinis, B. improvisus and C. virginica were fed phytoplankton containing elevated arsenic contents, significant arsenic incorporation occurred. Juvenile B. improvisus incorporated relatively more arsenic than adults of all three species. Compared to the 100 to 200% increase in arsenic content by phytoplankton exposed to dissolved arsenic, the 25 to 50% increase in these invertebrate species via trophic transfer is relatively small. Even though the trophic pathway for arsenic transfer is the major one for higher trophic levels within an ecosystem, the potential for direct arsenic impact to trophic levels other than phytoplankton appears to be minimal.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a primal-dual conjugate subgradient algorithm for solving convex programming problems. The motivation, however, is to employ it for solving specially structured or decomposable linear programming problems. The algorithm coordinates a primal penalty function and a Lagrangian dual function, in order to generate a (geometrically) convergent sequence of primal and dual iterates. Several refinements are discussed to improve the performance of the algorithm. These are tested on some network problems, with side constraints and variables, faced by the Freight Equipment Management Program of the Association of American Railroads, and suggestions are made for implementation.

Notes: Abstract The electrodeposition of cobalt-nickel alloys was carried out from Watts-type baths of composition 5–60gl−1 CoSO4 · 7H2O, 100–300gl−1 NiCl2 · 6H2O and 25gl−1 H3BO3 at a pH of 4.4. The cathodic polarization during electrodeposition and the alloy composition were greatly influenced by the concentrations of the depositable metal ions; whereas, the cathodic efficiency was only slightly affected. Under the examined conditions, the electrodeposition of the alloys belonged to the anomalous type. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the alloys were deposited in the face-centred cubic structure and consisted of a mixture of the two phases α(Co) andβ(Ni). Sound, smooth and bright alloy deposits were obtained and their properties were improved by increasing the nickel content of the bath.

Notes: Abstract We present an outline to calculate the principal and indirect portions of the planetary disturbing function, based on the method of W. M. Smart. We truncate the Taylor expansion at the third power of eccentricity-inclination. The outline of a new method to obtain the negative powers of the mutual distance between two planets is also given, neglecting powers higher than the fourth in the eccentricity-inclination.

Notes: Abstract Pyrite, chalcopyrite, and gold occur in quartz veins in granitic rocks and as scattered and disseminated impregnations in shear zones of the highly altered metavolcanics in the Hamash area, Southeastern Desert, Egypt. The minerals are associated in part with pyrrhotite, digenite, tetrahedrite, chalcocite, bornite, and covellite. Pyrite occurs in two forms: (1) idio- to hypidiomorphic coarse crystals with inclusions of preexisting sulfides, and (2) fine-crystalline aggregates. Chalcopyrite occurs in three forms: (1) idiomorphic coarse crystals, (2) fine-crystalline microinclusions, and (3) xenomorphic relicts. Three genetic phases of sulfide mineralization were identified. They are related to the successive cooling of the crystallizing solutions. Gold was hosted in the older sulfide minerals during a high-temperature disorder phase. Native gold was formed during the latest, decreasing-temperature phase through remobilization of auriferous pyrite. Microprobe analysis confirmed that gold and copper are relatively enriched in the late pyrite. Identified surface-alteration products include goethite, limonite, gold, carbonates, and sulfates of iron and copper.

Notes: Abstract A variety of new 6-thiophen-2-yl and 6-furan-2-ylthiazolo[2,3—a]pyridine derivatives could be prepared via the reaction of 2-functionally substituted methyl-2-thiazolin-4-one with cyanomethylenethiophen-2-yl and cyanomethylenefuran-2-yl derivatives. The structure of the reaction products was established based on spectral data.

Notes: Abstract Surface photometry of the UV continuum galaxy NGC 838 has been carried out in theB, V system using photographic plates obtained with the 74″ Kottamia telescope, Egypt. Isophotes, luminosity profiles, integrated photographic magnitudes, effective diameters and other photometric parameters are derived. The photoelectrically calibrated total apparent magnitudes areB T =13.57 with maximum diameters 1.57×1.34 (at threshold μ m =27.7 mag.//□″) andV T =12.91 with maximum diameters 1′.54×1′.32 (at threshold μ m =27.7 mag./□″). The integrated colour index(B−V) T =0.66 and the effective surface brightness μ e (B=19.0 mag./□″) and μ e (V=19.7 mag./□″. The major axis is at position angle θ=85°±1°. The nucleus of NGC 838 is quite blue (integrated colour(B−V)=0.41 forr *〈0′.1) compared to normal galaxies while the colour becomes redder from the nucleus outwards. The UV excess, Hα emission and radio continuum emission previously observed from this galaxy by other investigators may be attributed to a recent burst of star formation in the nucleus of the galaxy of duration slightly greater than 2×107 yr.
