Notes: Directionally solidified superconducting Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thick films have been fabricated by laser zone melting. Highly aligned grain structures were obtained. Films with no post-processing anneal showed Tc(R=0)=82 K and transport critical current densities Jc as high as 450 A/cm2 at 77 K and 5400 A/cm2 at 60 K. After annealing for 65 h at 850 °C, Tc increased to 85 K, and the best sample showed Jc =2200 A/cm2 at 77 K and 11 200 A/cm2 at 60 K.

Notes: A high-intensity dc electron beam with energy on the order of 100 keV propagating through a rarefied gas may be space-charge neutralized and made self-focusing by means of the beam-generated plasma. The purpose of this research was to investigate the propagation of partially and fully neutralized electron beams and to identify the ranges of gas pressure and other parameters which would permit high-quality electron beam transport, with linear self-focusing forces. Experiments were performed to measure transverse current density distributions for an electron beam of energy 60 keV, current 270 mA, propagating through nitrogen at pressures from 10−6 to 10−5 Torr. Theories were developed to describe the radial distributions of neutralization in the two distinct cases of incomplete and complete neutralization. The neutralization distributions in each case were calculated numerically and using a beam sheath tracing program, theoretical values of the beam current density distributions were obtained. Good agreement was generally found between experimental data and the calculations. The results confirm that under conditions where complete and uniform neutralization was expected, the beam optics were, in fact, linear, while partial neutralization produced serious nonlinearities.

Notes: The 200-MeV electron linac at the Hefei National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (HESYRL) is described. It is not only an injector of the 800-MeV storage ring, but an electron accelerator used for nuclear physics experiments and some other applications as well. The main design parameters and measuring results of the LINAC are given. The linac is a travelling wave structure, operating at a frequency of 2856 MHz, constant impedance, in a 2/3π mode. Its total length is about 35 m. Five klystrons are used as rf power; each klystron will provide 15 MW. In November 1987, the machine was successfully commissioned and typical operating parameters are 220 MeV, and 50 mA with an energy spread of ±0.8%.
