Notes: Long-range spin ordering has been studied in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet α-FeC2O4⋅2D2O by neutron diffraction on a powdered sample above and below TN=11.7 K. Data at 14 K show essentially the room-temperature chemical structure. The space group is C2/c, Z=4, and unit cell dimensions are a=11.700 A(ring), b=5.568 A(ring), and c=9.847 A(ring) with β=128.05°. Magnetic peaks appear at TN and data at 10.5 K show doubling of the unit cell along the b direction, the chain axis. The ordered structure belongs to the magnetic space group P2b2/n with spins parallel to the b axis. Cancellation of certain interchain interactions gives the structure a pronounced two-dimensional character. At T2=9.5 K a discontinuous transition to a second magnetic phase occurs with additional doubling of the unit cell in the a direction. Below T2 the symmetry of the magnetic structure is reduced to triclinic, P2s1¯ with the spins deviating slightly from the b axis.

Notes: Orthobaric densities of a square well fluid are obtained by means of a molecular dynamics simulation. Hard wall boundary conditions in one direction and periodic boundary conditions in the other two, added to a mean density close to the critical have two effects: a fast spinodal decomposition that condenses a slab of liquid at the center of the box plus a better sampling of the whole orthobaric curve. Results for the liquid densities compare well with previously obtained data while vapor densities are more sensitive to capillary effects. These finite size effects are analyzed within a lattice gas model, especially those produced by changes in box size and mean density. The method is well suited to predict orthobaric and miscibility curves for binary mixtures once the orthobaric curves of each molecular species have been properly adjusted to experiment.

Notes: Via the TDPAC technique and complementary x-ray diffraction analysis, the thermal decomposition of (NH4)2ZrF6 has been observed to occur in the range 400–800 K according to the thermolysis scheme (NH4)2ZrF6→485 KNH4ZrF5→560 KNH4Zr2F9 →620 KZrF4→760 KZrO2. Assuming that the first transformation takes place through the simple chemical reaction (NH4)2ZrF6→NH4ZrF5+NH4F, the corresponding activation energy has been determined to be Ea=(82±6) kJ/mol. The hyperfine parameters of the NH4Zr2F9 decomposition product have been determined between 14 and 560 K. A complete analogy with the isomorphous compound NH4Hf2F9 was observed.

Notes: Electronic-to-vibrational energy transfer has been studied by solving numerically the close-coupling equations, in the T-shape configuration, on the two lowest electronic states of the Na–N2 system. The diabatic potential surfaces were taken from Archirel and Habitz while the interelectronic coupling was modeled by different Gaussian-type functions. Different sets of parameters for the coupling were used in order to study the final vibrational distributions of N2. Finally, partial quenching probabilities are presented and compared with previous theoretical and experimental works.

Notes: The photodissociation of aminotetrazine-Ar and aminotetrazine-Ar2 was studied using supersonic jet spectroscopy. Excitation of aminotetrazine-Ar to the levels 16b2, 16a2, and 6a1 (429, 505, and 606 cm−1 vibrational energy, respectively) produced photodissociation lifetimes that differed by more than two orders of magnitude. Excitation of these three levels in aminotetrazine-Ar2 caused large changes in the branching ratio between the two dissociation products, aminotetrazine-Ar and aminotetrazine.

Notes: A multiseries integrable model (MSIM) is defined as a family of compatible flows on an infinite-dimensional Lie group of N-tuples of formal series around N given poles on the Riemann sphere. Broad classes of solutions to a MSIM are characterized through modules over rings of rational functions, called asymptotic modules. Possible ways for constructing asymptotic modules are Riemann–Hilbert and ∂¯ problems. When MSIM's are written in terms of the "group coordinates,'' some of them can be "contracted'' into standard integrable models involving a small number of scalar functions only. Simple contractible MSIM's corresponding to one pole, yield the Ablowitz–Kaup–Newell–Segur (AKNS) hierarchy. Two-pole contractible MSIM's are exhibited, which lead to a hierarchy of solvable systems of nonlinear differential equations consisting of (2+1)-dimensional evolution equations and of quite strong differential constraints.

Notes: We consider metrics which possess a priori certain "intrinsic symmetries'' on the three-spaces t=const. In the vacuum case, we obtain a generalization of Birkhoff's theorem and a set of solutions with a translational isometry operating on the whole space-time. In the nonvacuum case, we assume a perfect fluid matter content and a fluid flow orthogonal to the three-spaces t=const, and obtain several exact analytical solutions, some of them satisfying the standard energy conditions. In particular, a stiff equation of state is obtained in some cases, and we also have found particular solutions where a plane, spherical, or hyperbolic intrinsic symmetry is manifest.

Notes: A detailed description is provided of a triple quadrupole (QQQ) tandem mass spectrometer (MS/MS) which is kinetically well behaved and can be configured to use either a molecular beam target (type A) or collision chamber (type B) configuration. Its unique capabilities are being used to explore design criteria essential for (i) absolute cross-section measurements, and for (ii) the development of standardized operating conditions for generic, instrument-independent spectral databases for collisionally activated dissociation (CAD).

Notes: We describe a tunable electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometer designed to operate at frequencies between 160 and 525 GHz and magnetic fields of up to 20 T. To operate in such a broad frequency range we use a very stable optically pumped far infrared laser. The performance of the spectrometer has been measured with solid and liquid samples. This allows us to outline the potential uses of the spectrometer.
