Notizen: The proportion of random localized destructive breakdown to stable electroluminescence has been varied continuously by adjusting (1) the recipe used to fabricate dc thin-film electroluminescent devices and (2) the conditions under which they have been tested. It has been shown that neither simple geometrical artifacts nor migration effects can be responsible for localized destructive breakdown. Rather, it has been established that the experiments require an explanation based on a fundamental tendency for dc thin-film electroluminescence to be associated with a current-controlled negative differential resistance which gives rise to filamentary and sometimes destructive current concentration. It is concluded that the existence and origins of such current-controlled negative differential resistance should be tested by theoretical and materials science studies.

Notizen: It has been seen that a plasma produced by a Marshall gun can be injected into and trapped by a tokamak plasma. This trapping of a gun-injected plasma is explained in terms of a depolarization current mechanism. A model is developed that describes the slowing of a plasma beam crossing into the magnetic field of a tokamak. The slowing down time is shown to go as τs∝T3/2eL2/nbα20, where nb and Te are the density and temperature of the plasma beam and α0/L is the pitch of the field lines per unit length in the direction in which the beam is traveling. Experimental tests of this model are consistent with the scaling predictions.

Notizen: In the Tokapole II tokamak [Nucl. Fusion 19, 1509 (1979)] the three-dimensional structure of the rapid sawtooth crash that accompanies internal disruptions has been observed. The sawtooth crash is helical, i.e., the decrease in soft x-ray intensity occurs along a q=1 helical contour, in accord with the standard reconnection model. The poloidally asymmetric radial expansion of the crash inward from the q=1 surface provides a measure of the reconnection time consistent with single helicity reconnection from a growing, nonrotating magnetic island.

Notizen: The central safety factor during a sawtooth oscillation in material limiter tokamak discharges (scrapeoff plates inserted to the separatrix) in the TOKAPOLE II poloidal divertor tokamak [Phys. Rev. Lett. 49, 734 (1982)] is measured to be significantly less than 1 (approximately 0.7) during a sawtooth oscillation. This result is identical to that observed earlier in the same device in magnetic limiter discharges. Thus the presence of scrapeoff plasma beyond the divertor separatrix is not responsible for the absence of total reconnection.

Notizen: The polarization of electron-cyclotron emission at the second harmonic (ω=2ωce) has been measured both without and with a microwave absorber installed within view of the receiver to reduce wall reflection. Whereas without the absorber the radiation is dominantly unpolarized, with the absorber installed the radiation is significantly polarized, and the extraordinary mode intensity is typically three times the ordinary mode intensity. This indicates that wall reflections significantly depolarize the received radiation. Right-hand-cutoff effects are also observed and electron temperature is inferred from the emission from optically thin plasmas.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper we consider the problem of determining and constructing E- and MV-optimal block designs to use in experimental settings where ν treatments are applied to experimental units occurring in b blocks of size k, k≥ν. It is shown that some of the well-known methods for constructing E- and MV-optimal unequally replicated designs having ν≥k fail to yield optimal designs in the case where ν〈k. Some sufficient conditions are derived for the E- and MV-optimality of block designs having ν〈k and methods for constructing designs satisfying these sufficient conditions are given.

Notizen: Abstract We prove a finite model theorem and infinitary completeness result for the propositional μ-calculus. The construction establishes a link between finite model theorems for propositional program logics and the theory of well-quasi-orders.

Notizen: Summary The axial forces generated by the earthworm Aporrectodea rosea were measured by directing the earthworm to tunnel into soil discs mounted on an electronic balance connected to a datalogger. The area over which the force acted was estimated from the size of the hole created by the tunnelling. The maximum force recorded by an individual worm was 0.760 N and the mean maximum value was 0.465 N. The maximum pressures recorded was 116.5 kPa, while the mean maximum pressure was 72.8 kPa. These axial pressures are approximately one-tenth of the maximum axial pressure recorded for plant roots. The statistical distribution of activity as the worms tunnelled through the soil discs was analysed. Pressures recorded were well in excess of physiologically measured pressures and the generation of forces within muscles to achieve these pressures was calculated by some assumptions. It was estimated that there is a maximum tension in the circular muscles of 0.15 N per segment of the worm.

Notizen: Summary The radial pressures generated by the earthworm Aporrectodea rosea were measured in a study of the conditions under which the worms were able to crack soil discs into which they were encouraged to tunnel. The tensile strength of replicate discs was determined by indirect tension tests and by expansion of rubber membranes in soil discs. Simple engineering theory was used to relate the stress required to fracture a disc with the applied internal stress. Mean values for the radial stress applied by the earthworms in tunnelling through the discs was 230 kPa. With some assumptions about the distribution of muscles across the worm diameter, it was estimated that the mean maximum force generated by all the longitudinal muscles in any segment was 3.2 N.

Notizen: Summary Some physical properties of casts of the earthworm Aporrectodea rosea were examined and compared with the properties of aggregates from the bulk soil. Cast shape was quantified by three ratio methods and two mathematical spectra methods, using data obtained by two-dimensional scanning. Shapes were compared with previously published descriptions of “modexi”. The tensile strength of dry casts was measured by the indirect tension method and was found to be approximately 2.5 times greater than that of dried aggregates of similar size. Tensile strengths are used to predict that beds of casts are less compactable than beds of aggregates. From relationships between soil water content, matric potential and undrained shear strength of fresh earthworm casts, the mean pressure applied to soil as it is remoulded by passing through the earthworm gut is estimated to be 259 Pa.
