Notes: Abstract An approach to structural analysis is presented in which object-oriented data structures make it possible to arrange computational tasks in a unique fashion. A general matrix-free solution algorithm for use with arbitrary assemblages of linearly connected objects is presented, followed by an overview of a prototype structural analysis program built entirely on such an object-oriented data structure. The principal result is due to the flexibility inherent in this type of data structure, which makes it possible to analyze structural models incrementally as they are developed. Although certainly useful in traditional contexts, the parallel nature of the scheme could be particularly powerful in a multiprocessor environment.

Notes: Abstract Stable isotope measurements on molluses from raised marine deposits, and on foraminifera in a piston core, define a series of light isotope events. A major event is14C dated at ca. 10.3 ka and is correlated with a marked isotopic excursion in HU77-021-156. This event is followed by a dramatic rise in diatom and, slightly later, in benthic foraminiferal abundances. Molluses record another light event around 8 ka. Major fluctuations in both δ18O and δ13C around 10.3 ka suggests that the Hudson Strait ice stream may have responded to the Younger Dryas climatic oscillation.

Notes: Summary Uteroglobin, a secretory protein of rabbit uterine epithelium, was localized by the direct immunoperoxidase method in control and hCG-induced pseudopregnant rabbits. In control rabbits, uteroglobin was confined to the apical cytoplasm of nearly all cells of the endometrial epithelium. The induction of pseudopregnancy resulted in a pronounced continuing increase, through 4 days post-hCG administration, in the absolute number of epithelial cells engaged in uteroglobin synthesis. Furthermore, the endoplasmic reticulum was more intensely stained for uteroglobin than in the epithelial cells of control rabbit endometrium. Thus, the increased production of uteroglobin, in response to hormonal stimulation, appears to be achieved both through an increase in the amount of uteroglobin synthesized by a given cell as well as by an increase in the number of cells involved in uteroglobin synthesis. Concurrent with the increase in the number of cells synthesizing uteroglobin, an increase in the number of unstained cells first appeared at the second day of pseudopregnancy, during the period of maximal epithelial proliferation. However, within those cells containing uteroglobin on the second day following injection with hCG, most staining was limited to the perinuclear membrane. At various times following hCG administration, a number of scattered cells, intensely stained for uteroglobin, were observed in the uterine epithelium. Based upon ultrastructural studies, failure to exclude trypan blue, and the presence of intra-mitochondrial uteroglobin, they were identified as cither dead or dying cells.

Notes: Abstract The effects of dopant addition on sintering, electrical conductivity, fracture strength, and corrosion resistance of polycrystalline calcium titanate have been investigated for a wide list of potential substitutional dopants. Significant improvements of electrical conductivity at room temperature and corrosion resistance in molten KOH at 450° C have been observed in the polycrystalline calcium titanate specimens doped with tantalum and niobium and cerium and chromium, respectively. These results are in comparison to pure, reduced material. On the other hand, no appreciable effect of dopant addition has been observed on sinterability and fracture strength of the polycrystalline calcium titanate.

Notes: Summary A table of data for acidity, basicity, polarity and London potential for stationary phases is given. These provide guidance in choosing a stationary phase for a given task from the 26 substances listed. The indices are calculated from infra-red shifts of 1-chlorobutane and the visible wavelength shifts of l2 when they are dissolved in the stationary phases, from NMR estimates of acidity and basicity and from relative retention data. They replace the less reliable data of Burns and Hawkes. Methods of determining the indices are suggested that require only a gas chromatograph and can be applied by technicians with no specialized understanding of solution parameters. An attempt to add electron donoracceptor indices to the table was unsuccessful. A further table is given of the slopes of the log plots d(logt′)/dC for use in extrapolating from one homologue to another on these stationary phases.

Notes: Abstract This study provides the most comprehensive physico-chemical and phytoplankton data yet available for Australian dune lakes, which are among the world's most naturally acidic and oligotrophic freshwaters. Seasonal and spatial variations were examined in Blue Lagoon and Lake Freshwater, two ‘water-table window’ lakes in south-east Queensland. Like other dune lakes, they are acidic (minimum pH 4.20 and 4.55, respectively), polymictic water bodies with low concentrations of marine-derived major ions and almost undetectable levels of trace metals. While linmologically similar in winter, during spring-summer Lake Freshwater has significantly higher levels of chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus (TP) and turbidity than Blue Lagoon and other dune lakes, indicating seasonal mesotrophy. The key nutrient is TP, which has recently increased to a maximum of 17 μ· l−1, due either to inputs from recreational sources, or to the death and decomposition of littoral vegetation resulting from falling water levels over the last decade. Inorganic nitrogen, though present only in small amounts, does not appear to limit the eutrophication process because of a shift in phytoplankton dominance from the usual desmids and dinoflagellates to N2-fixing blue-green algae. A chlorophyll - TP linear regression derived for dune lakes indicates that at TP 〈 20 µg · l−1 chlorophyll ‘yield’ is higher than in other lake types represented by regressions from the literature. This may be due to a more efficient utilization of the limited available phosphorus by dune lake algae which have adapted to the naturally oligotrophic environment. The implications of these findings for lake management are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Samples of sandstones and shales were analysed by instrumental neutron activation analysis for a total of 30 elements. Three irradiation and five counting periods wer employed. Solutions and National Bureau of Standards Reference Materials wer used for comparison. The samples were obtained from drill cuttings (with a few core samples) from drillings in the Salton Sea geothermal field of California. These determinations form part of a major study to elemental variation as a function of mineral variation as depth and temperature in the well vary. The overall goal is to examine mineral alteration and/or element migration under typical geothermal conditions. The techniques involve typical compromises between maximizing precision for individual element determinations and the amount of time and effort that can be expended, as it is desired to examine large numbers of samples. With the limitations imposed by the reactor flux ailable at the U. C. Irvine TRIGA reactor, the detectors available, and time factors, most precisions are acceptable for geological comparison purposes. Some additional measurements wer made by delayed-neutron counting methods to compare with uranium determinations made by conventional instrumental neutron activation analysis methods.
