Notes: Summary It was found that some ciliates,Stentor, Spirostomum andBlepharisma, which can contract rapidly like the stalks of Vorticellidae, have Ca2+-binding proteins that are very similar to spasmins, in the immunological sense. The presence of spasmins in other Protozoa and in some Metazoa was also investigated.

Notes: Summary The radiosensitization brought about by oridonin, one of theRabdosia diterpenoids, alone or in combination with misonidazole, was investigated in Chinese hamster V79 cells. The enhancement ratio of 1.92 was obtained when 0.01 mM oridonin and 1 mM misonidazole were administered to hypoxic cells under radiation. The enhancement ratios of oridonin and misonidazole for hypoxic cells were 1.16 and 1.59 respectively. Hence, a supra-additive effect was obtained by the combined treatment with these two drugs. Under aerobic conditions, no effect of 0.01 mM oridonin on the radiosensitization caused by misonidazole was observed.

Notes: Abstract Static and dynamic critical behavior ofXY systems in cubic anisotropic crystallines, with extended defects (or quenched nonmagnetic impurities) strongly correlated alongɛ d -dimensional space and randomly distributed ind − ɛ d dimensions, were studied. These extended defects make the systems coordinate anisotropic, resulting in unique critical behavior due to competition between the cubic anisotropy and the coordinate anisotropy. The systems were analyzed by anɛ 1/2 (ɛ≡4 − d) type of expansion with double expansion parameters based on a renormalization-group (RG) approach. Critical exponents were calculated near the second-order phase transition point and the behavior of the first-order transition was evaluated near the tricritical point.

Notes: In this paper we deal with the boundary-element formulation for the axisymmetric transient heat-conduction problem of a transversely isotropic medium. The time-dependent fundamental solution for the axisymmetric problem is used and the time integral is performed analytically. It is shown that the function obtained is separated into steady and transient parts and the singularity at the boundary integral is only in the steady part.
