    Description: The Hubble Space Telescope will provide the opportunity to perform precise astronomical photometry above the disturbing effects of the atmosphere. The High Speed Photometer is designed to provide the observatory with a stable, precise photometer with wide dynamic range, broad wavelenth coverage, time resolution in the microsecond region, and polarimetric capability. Here, the scientific requirements for the instrument are examined, the unique design features of the photometer are explored, and the improvements to be expected over the performance of ground-based instruments are projected.

    Description: An analysis of the particulates which form upon the bombardment of a gaseous mixture reflecting cosmic molecular abundances with H2(+) ions accelerated at 350 keV. The model of Black and Dalgarno (1977) for the Zeta Oph cloud and an observational determination of the interstellar Ar abundances (Simpson et al., 1986) are used to determine the abundances of the gas mixture. The characteristics of the resulting residue are examined, including photographs and absorbance spectra. The possible astrophysical implications of the experiment are discussed.

    Description: A finite-element numerical method is used here to analyze the effect of a low-viscosity zone on convection driven by heating from below in the upper mantle, in particular on the formation of midplate swells. The convective temperature and velocity solutions are calculated for different combinations of the viscosity in the top layer, the fluid layer thicknesses, and the Rayleigh number based on the viscosity in the bottom layer. The temperature solutions are used to calculate the geoid, topography, and heat flow anomalies, the elastic plate thickness, the depth of compensation, and an upper bound on the uplift time that result from the flow. The results are compared to data at the Hawaii, Bermuda, Cape Verde, and Marquesas swells. The magnitudes and the trend with age are consistent with theoretical and other estimates of the viscosity variation in the shallow upper mantle. Convective models can therefore explain the uplift and observed anomalies at midplate swells.
