Notes: Abstract NON-VON is a highly parallel non-von Neumann supercomputer presently under construction at Columbia University. The basis for NON-VON's significant cost/performance advantage lies in a highly unusual application of VLSI technology to the realization of massive computational parallelism. This paper outlines the manner in which the emerging technology of VLSI circuits is employed in NON-VON to achieve this advantage. Particular emphasis is given to novel aspects of the design, layout, and operation of the NON-VON processing element, eight of which are to be embedded within each integrated circuit chip.

Notes: Abstract Conventional random access memories are capable only of writing data into and reading data from the storage location corresponding to a given address. The availability of VLSI circuits containing hundreds of thousands of switching devices, however, has recently made practical the implementation of “active” memory chips capable of performing a range of complex operations on their stored data. Such designs are characterized by the extensive intermingling of processing and memory resources within a single chip to achieve the rapid and cost-effective parallel execution of operations relevant to such tasks as image processing, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, and database management. This paper presents a brief survey of a number of active memory chips that have been implemented or proposed, along with a more detailed examination of a particular active memory circuit, the NON-VON 3 primary processing subsystem chip.

Notes: Abstract Product data models can be viewed as a class of semantic data models which take into account the needs of engineering data. In this paper the characteristics for semantic data models defined by Peckham and Maryanski [8] are taken as a starting point. The relevance of these characteristics to product data is shown. The capabilities of a prototype product description system are described in relation to the same characteristics. Additional data modeling characteristics such as parametrization and data sharing, which have been introduced to support engineering design, are then described. These can be viewed as extending beyond the accepted capabilities of semantic data models.

Notes: Summary Polyacetylene was doped with evaporated iodine (I2). The characteristics of A1/cis-[CHIy]x/Au Schottky barrier solar cell was investigated. It is found that the maximum conversion efficiency is 2.67%. The solar cell parameters, such as open-circuit voltage (Voc), short-circuit current (Jsc), fill factor (F.F.), and energy conversion efficiency (η), were measured under the various incident light intensity. The stability of the cell was also estimated by the variation of J-V curves in argon environment.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis and selected aspects of the UV, IR, and1H NMR spectra of the title compound are described. The crystals of the title compound are triclinic witha=12.999(9),b=8.911(4),c=9.199(5) Å;α=105.56(3),β=113.50(4), γ=92.53(3)°;Z=2; space groupP¯1. Its X-ray crystal structure analysis provides information regarding the conformational features of the amide linkage when no intermolecular hydrogen bonding involving this group is present. The X-ray study shows that the C′-N bond is longer [1.363(4) Å] than that found normally in peptide molecules. The compound shows a peculiar disorder involving one of the two amide groups present in the molecule. The conformation of theN-methyl acetanilide moiety and its relation to the1H NMR spectrum of the compound are discussed.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes an FMS scheduling method that treats an FMS as a group of problem-solving agents cooperating to perform manufacturing jobs. The main thrusts of such a method include the ability to handle the dynamically changing production conditions, its taking into account the communication method, the improved reliability, and the use of distributed control. The paper emphasizes research issues associated with various aspects of the cooperative problem-solving method, including: (1) dynamic task assignments, (2) the coordination mechanism, and (3) knowledge-based scheduling as problem solving. A simulation study which compares the performance of the cooperative problem solving approach with that of the more traditional scheduling approaches is also reported.

Notes: Abstract The planning, scheduling, and control of manufacturing systems can all be viewed as problem-solving activities. In flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs), the computer program carrying out these problem-solving activities must additionally be able to handle the shorter lead time, the flexibility of job routing, the multiprocessing environment, the dynamic changing states, and the versatility of machines. This article presents an artificial intelligence (AI) method to perform manufacturing problem solving. Since the method is driven by manufacturing scenarios represented by symbolic patterns, it is referred to as pattern-directed. The method is based on three AI techniques. The first is the pattern-directed inference technique to capture the dynamic nature of FMSs. The second is the nonlinear planning technique to construct schedules and assign resources. The third is the inductive learning method to generate the pattern-directed heuristics. This article focuses on solving the FMS scheduling problem. In addition, this article reports the computation results to evaluate the utility of various heuristic functions, to identify important design parameters, and to analyze the resulting computational performance in using the pattern-directed approach for manufacturing problem-solving tasks such as scheduling.

Notes: Abstract Scheduling in flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) must take into account the shorter lead time, the multiprocessing environment, and the dynamically changing states. In this paper, a pattern-directed approach is presented which incorporates a nonlinear planning method developed in the artificial intelligence field. The scheduling system described here is knowledge-based and utilizes both forward-and backward-chaining for generating schedules (treated as state-space plans). The pattern-directed approach is dynamically adjustable and thus can handle scheduling requirements unique to the FMS environment, such as dynamic scheduling, failure-recovery scheduling, or prioritized scheduling for meeting deadlines.
