    Notes: Abstract We draw attention to a visual observation of a brief flash from ζ Lyrae, observed by Heis in 1850, which resembles the optical burst detected electronically by Wdowiak and Clifton (1985) from β Cam in 1969. Visual observation by the author of a second magnitude flash of very short duration is shown to originate from planar reflection from a very distant satellite. Such flashes will contribute to the ‘noise’ in all-sky searches for optical counterparts of γ-ray bursters.

    Notes: Abstract The similarity in properties of GK Per and BV Cen suggests that the latter may be a classical nova remnant rather than a dwarf nova. Our Hα and V CCD photometry show no sign of a nova shell but disclose the presence of a close and probably physical companion. BV(RI) c CCD photometry of the companion, assumed to be a dwarf, givesM v =3.1±0.3 for BV Cen at quiescence. Even though half of the light in BV Cen comes from the secondary this is much brighter than expected for a dwarf nova and supports the conclusion that BV Cen was an unrecorded nova.

    Notes: Abstract A broad class of problems involving the optimal control of robot arms can be formulated as dynamic programming problems whose structure is particularly attractive for parallel processing. For certain simple cost functions the dynamic programming formulation reduces to determining the shortest path through a network. This algorithm has been implemented on a Floating Point Systems' T-20 hypercube computer. An analysis of the performance of the algorithm provides several important insights into the interplay between problem size and the number of processors in a parallel computer. The results also underscore the potential for parallel computers in real-time control applications.

    Notes: Abstract From about 30 Dwarf Novae with the best determined distances the following relationships are found. (i) a tight correlation between absolute magnitude at maximum light, Mv(max), and orbital period, P. (ii) a correlation between Mv(min) and P showing wide scatter. (iii) a correlation between Mv(mean), the mean absolute magnitude averaged over normal outbursts, and P, again with wide scatter. The scatter is shown to correlate strongly with ouburst timescale Tn. (iv) a strong correlation between range, Mv(min)-Mv(max), and Tn (the Kukarkin-Parenago relationship). (v) a strong correlation between range Mv(mean)-Mv(max), and both Tn and P. This final correlation is interpreted in terms of the disc instability model of dwarf novae and successfully predicts the observed width of outburst versus P relationship.

    Notes: Abstract We present optical and IR observations of the dwarf nova OY Car during the May 1985 superoutburst. From them we find that the superhump has a temperature of ∼8000K and an area of order half the size of the red dwarf or accretion disk. We also compare the behaviour during two simultaneous optical/IR observations. Whilst the light curves in the two pass bands are similar during one observation, in the other observation they show marked differences that may be due to a cool region in the outer disk.

    Notes: Abstract This investigation describes five Mesozoic dolerite dikes which intrude Paleozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks of the Inner Piedmont of western South Carolina. The dikes are vertical or nearly so and strike approximately N40° W. Three major northeast-trending faults also occur in the study area. Left lateral displacement of one dolerite is documented at a locality near Cleveland, South Carolina. Elsewhere, several of the dolerite dikes appear to terminate at or near the faults. — The dolerite dikes have subophitic to microporphyritic textures and consist principally of plagioclase (generally An70–80), olivine (dominantly Fo80–90) and augite with subordinate pigeonite, titanomagnetite, chromite and brown, partly glassy mesostasis. In one dike pyroxene compositions trend from augite to ferroaugite in contrast to an augite→subcalcic augite→pigeonite trend characteristic of the other dolerites. The contrasting trends primarily result from differences in SiO2 abundance in the dolerite magmas. — Major and trace element analyses indicate the presence of two different olivine-normative dolerite magma types. The two magma types are not related by near surface crystal fractionation. Models for genesis of the olivine-normative dolerite magmas by partial melting of a plagioclase peridotite upper mantle source region are presented. The models require that the source region be enriched in LREE and incompatible elements such as Rb, Ba, Hf and Th relative to Cl chondritic abundances. One magma type appears to represent a primary dolerite magma that ascended from the source region with little subsequent compositional change. The second magma type most likely experienced assimilation of clinopyroxene-garnet (eclogite) during ascent, thereby acquiring a REE pattern with a less steep negative slope for the LREE and a slight positive slope in the HREE.
