    Notes: Reaktionen des Mangancarbonyls mit Phosphinen führen zu Monosubstitutionsprodukten, entspr. Mn(CO)4PR3, die je nach der Natur des Restes R ein- oder zweikernig gebaut sind. Einkernige, paramagnetische Verbindungen leiten sich von Triphenyl- oder Triäthylphosphin und den homologen Arsinen und Stibinen ab, während mit Tricyclohexylphosphin und Triphenylphosphit diamagnetische, zweikernige Derivate entstehen; in Lösung ist häufig ein temperaturabhängiges Gleichgewicht zwischen der monomeren und der dimeren Form anzunehmen. Auf Grund von IR-Spektren und Dipolmessungen wird der räumliche Bau der Verbindungen erörtert.

    Notes: Die Reaktion des Kobaltcarbonyls mit Triphenylphosphin in polaren Mitteln wie Dioxan (bei 30°) führt im Sinne der Disproportionierung 2 Co° → Co⊕ + Co⊖ zu einer 2-ionigen Verbindung [CoI(CO)3(P(C6H5)3)2]⊕[Co-I(CO)4]⊖, die sich mit Komplexen wie [B(C6H5)4]⊖, [HgJ4]2⊖, [Cr(NH3)2(SCN)4]⊖ unter Bildung entspr. Salze des Tricarbonyl-bis-[triphenylphosphin]-Kations umsetzen läßt. Außerdem entsteht, besonders in indifferenten Mitteln (bei 0°), als echtes Derivat des Kobalttetracarbonyls das bisher allein bekannte Bis-[tric-carbonyl-triphenylphosphin-kobalt(0)], [Co(CO)3P(C6H5)3]2; häufig liegen Gemenge beider Verbindungen vor. - Die magnetochemische Untersuchung ergibt für die ionogene Verbindung Diamagnetismus, das Kation ist somit ein Durchdringungskomplex edelgasähnlicher Konfiguration; das Reinecke-Salz zeigt dementsprechend den Paramagnetismus den komplexen Chromat(III)-Anions. Der Diamagnetismus des Substitutionsproduktes beweist dessen zweikernige Struktur, wie sie schon bisher postuliert wurde.

    Notes: Unter Anwendung einer kürzlich neu aufgefundenen, ohne Katalysator gemäß \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm Me}\left({{\rm CO}} \right)_6 + {\rm Ar} \to {\rm ArMe}\left({{\rm CO}} \right)_3 + 3\,{\rm CO} $$\end{document} \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$\left({{\rm Me} = {\rm Cr},\,{\rm Mo},\,{\rm W};{\rm Ar} = {\rm C}_6 {\rm H}_6 {\rm und}\,{\rm Derivate}} \right) $$\end{document} bei erhöhter Temperatur verlaufenden Synthese wurden zahlreiche gemischte Sechsringaromaten-Metallcarbonyle von Cr, Mo und W dargestellt. Neben Benzol, seinen Alkylverbindungen und Naphthalin als kondensiertem Aromaten erwiesen sich auch Derivate mit einsamen Elektronenpaaren in der funktionellen Gruppe, wie z. B. C6H5Cl, C6H5OH, C6H5NH2, C6H5CO2CH3, als der π-Komplexbildung fähig. Aus CH3O2CC6H5Cr(CO)3 wurde durch alkalische Verseifung weiterhin HO2CC6H5Cr(CO)3 erhalten. Die meist gelben, sublimierbaren, diamagnetischen Verbindungen sind ebenso wie C6H6Cr(CO)3 und C4H4SCr(CO)3 als edelgaskonfigurierte Durchdringungs-komplexe mit zentralem, sechsbindigem Me0 aufzufassen.  -  Die an \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm C}_6 {\rm H}_5 {\rm OHCr}\left({{\rm CO}} \right)_3,{\rm C}_6 {\rm H}_5 {\rm CO}_2 {\rm HCr}\left({{\rm CO}} \right)_3 \,{\rm und}\,{\rm C}_6 {\rm H}_5 {\rm NH}_2 {\rm Cr}\left({{\rm CO}} \right)_3 $$\end{document} gegenüber den jeweiligen freien Aromaten auftretende Aciditätssteigerung bzw. Basizitätsverminderung entspricht einem induktiven Effekt, der durch die Einbeziehung des π-Elektronensextetts in die Metallschale zustandekommt.

    Description: Structural features of ecosystems, such as leaf area index, phytomass and canopy chemical contents, are beginning to be estimated from remotely sensed data. This development, in combination with ecological modeling, is permitting the estimation of functional features of ecosystems including primary productivity and nutrient cycling. Such techniques are also being applied to the problem of monitoring the effects of air or water pollutants on biota. Sensors that obtain data at a coarse spatial scale (1 km2 or more) are also permitting the observation of biospheric patterns at a large regional or global scale for the first time. When coupled with atmospheric measurements, field data and simulation models, such data may serve to address ecological processes, including pollution effects, at large regional or global scales.

    Description: The ability of C-band radar (4.75 GHz) to discriminate features of forest structure, including biomass, is tested using a truck-mounted scatterometer for field tests on a 1.5-3.0 m pygmy forest of cypress (Cupressus pygmaea) and pine (Pinus contorta ssp, Bolanderi) near Mendocino, CA. In all, 31 structural variables of the forest are quantified at seven sites. Also measured was the backscatter from a life-sized physical model of the pygmy forest, composed of nine wooden trees with 'leafy branches' of sponge-wrapped dowels. This model enabled independent testing of the effects of stem, branch, and leafy branch biomass, branch angle, and moisture content on radar backscatter. Field results suggested that surface area of leaves played a greater role in leaf scattering properties than leaf biomass per se. Tree leaf area index was strongly correlated with vertically polarized power backscatter (r = 0.94; P less than 0.01). Field results suggested that the scattering role of leaf water is enhanced as leaf surface area per unit leaf mass increases; i.e., as the moist scattering surfaces become more dispersed. Fog condensate caused a measurable rise in forest backscatter, both from surface and internal rises in water content. Tree branch mass per unit area was highly correlated with cross-polarized backscatter in the field (r = 0.93; P less than 0.01), a result also seen in the physical model.

    Description: Observations covering a period of 20 years show that the large proper motion (4.08 arcsec/yr) of the nearly triple system 40 Eridani-ABC will cause its brightest member, A, to pass within 3 arcsec of a faint background star. The originally hoped-for primary gravitational lens effect will therefore not take place although a minor secondary effect may occur near the time of closest approach on June 1, 1987.

    Description: Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and aircraft-borne Thematic Mapper simulator (TMS) data were collected over two areas of natural vegetation in southern California exposed to gradients of pollutant dose, particularly in photochemical oxidants: the coastal sage scrub of the Santa Monica Mountains in the Los Angeles basin, and the yellow pine forests in the southern Sierra Nevada. In both situations, natural variations in canopy closure, with subsequent exposure of understory elements (e.g.,rock or soil, chaparral, grasses, and herbs), were sufficient to cause changes in spectral variation that could obscure differences due to visible foliar injury symptoms observed in the field. TM or TMS data are therefore more likely to be successful in distinguishing pollution injury from background variation when homogeneous communities with closed canopies are subjected to more severe pollution-induced structural and/or compositional change. The present study helps to define the threshold level of vegetative injury detectable by TM data.
