Notes: Abstract The structures of 1,1,2,2-tetraphenylethane-1,2-diol and its 1∶2 molecular inclusion complex with dmso have been elucidated by X-ray crystallography from single crystal diffraction data. Crystals of the host, compound I, are monoclinic, space groupP21/n, witha=17.669(6) Å,b=6.144(6) Å,c=17.873(6) Å,β=92.67(3)°,z=4. Crystals of the clathrate, compound II, are triclinic,P¯1, witha=9.138(5) Å,b=18.384(6) Å,c=18.496(3) Å,α=61.16(2)°,β=83.22(3)°, γ=88.06(3)°,Z=4. Both structures were solved by direct methods and refined to finalR values of 0.072 and 0.107, respectively. Compound I is partially disordered and its packing is governed by strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Compound II is characterized by crossing channels which accommodate the guest dmso molecules. The thermal properties of the latter compound have been characterized by DTA and TGA thermograms.

Notes: Abstract The structures of the 1∶2 molecular complexes oftrans-9,10-dihydroxy-9,10-diphenyl-9,10-dihydroanthracene with 4-methylcyclohexanone (1) and with 2-methylcyclohexanone (2) have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The crystal data are as follows: Compound (1):P22/c,a=8.838(2) Å,b=8.92(1) Å,c=20.879(8)=Å,β=98.67(2)°,V=1627(2) Å3,Z=2 andR=0.062 for 2201 unique MoKα reflections; Compound (2):P¯1,a=8.917(3) Å,b=9.900(2) Å,c=11.250(4) Å,a=68.72(2)°,β=64.39(3)°, γ=74.86(2)°,V=828.1(5) Å3,Z=1 andR=0.098 for 2563 unique reflections. Both inclusion compounds exhibit O-H⋯O=C hydrogen bonding interactions. The thermal properties of these compounds have been characterized by DTA and TGA thermograms.

Notes: Abstract Alkane hydrogenolysis on Re/Al2O3 catalysts has been studied by a thermal cycling procedure. Because deactivation occurs during heating and is then reversed at higher temperatures, rates are much faster during cooling than during heating. Rates during subsequent thermal cycles are reproducible. Re is 104 times more active than Pt for hydrogenolysis.

Notes: Abstract A transformation of the differential equations of motion of the two-body problem in the spherical coordinates to oscillator form is derived. It is shown that the independent variable transformation dt/ds=r2 is a transformation which makes the oscillator form possible.

Notes: Abstract The first data from a16O beam of total energy 232 GeV at the BNL Tandem-AGS are discussed. Preliminary results from a28Si beam of total energy 406 GeV are also shown. The full complement of E802, including a magnetic spectrometer, was used for the28Si measurement. A different experimental arrangement was used for16O. Comparison measurements with proton beams are presented for both configurations.

Notes: Summary Electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) has been used to study the subcellular distribution of Ca, Na, K. Cl, and Mg in smooth muscle. The EPMA results indicate that the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is the majorintracellular source and sink of activator Ca: norepinephrine decreases the Ca content of the junctional SR in portal vein smooth muscle. Mitochondria do not play a significant role in regulating cytoplasmic free Ca2+, but mitochondrial Ca content can be altered to a degree compatible with suggestions that fluctuations in matrix Ca contribute to the control of mitochondrial metabolism. The rise intotal cytoplasmic Ca during a maintained, maximal contraction is very much greater than the rise in free Ca2+, and is probably in excess of the known binding sites available on calmodulin and myosin. Cell Ca is not increased in normal cells that are Na-loaded. The non-Donnan distribution of Cl is not due to compartmentalization, but reflects high cytoplasmic Cl. Na-loading of smooth muscle in K-free solutions is temperature dependent, and may exhibit cellular heterogeneity undetected by conventional techniques. The total cell Mg is equivalent to approximately 12 mM, and less than 50% of it can be accounted for by binding to ATP and to actin. Mitochondrial monovalent cations in smooth muscle are relatively rapidly exchangeable.

Notes: Abstract The hydrogenolysis of propane and of n-butane on Pt/Al2O3 and Pt-Re/Al2O3 catalysts has been studied using a stepwise temperature programme which reveals clearly the effects of carbonaceous deposits on both rate and product selectivities. On Pt/Al2O3 catalysts, deposits formed during the reaction of n-butane suppress C2H6 formation and enhance C3H8 formation, due solely to a decrease in the probability of central C-C bond fission. On Pt-Re/Al2O3, such deposits have little or no effect on product selectivities.

Notes: Summary Surface fluxes of heat, latent heat, and momentum, and entrainment fluxes and vertical motion at the top of the boundary layer have been calculated for limited regions of several mid-latitude ocean storms. Results have been combined to describe distributions of boundary layer processes which are characteristic of such storms. Surface heat fluxes have important effects in the region west of cold or occluded fronts and are relatively unimportant within a band of about 200 km width east of fronts. Entrainment in pre-frontal regions is driven largely by vertical shear at the top of the boundary layer, while in post-frontal regions it is driven largely by surface heat flux. Boundary layers are well defined in regions more than roughly 200 km east or west of fronts; but closer to fronts boundary layers are not well defined due to the combined effects of entrainment, condensation, and vertical motion associated with the distribution of surface stress.

Notes: Summary Polypeptides, with elevated levels of essential amino acids, could be useful as partial protein supplements to food and feeds. To obtain DNA fragments coding for these polymers, oligonucleotides were constructed by random synthesis of a mixture of appropriate codon pairs and inserted into a bacterial plasmid in E. coli. Two of the isolated fragments were subjected to DNA sequence analysis and theoretically code for polypeptides containing up to 23% lysine, 12% tryptophan, 12% methionine, 6% isoleucine, and 6% threonine. These five amino acids make up 60% of the total amino acid content of the peptide, compared with 25% for the same amino acids in α lactalbumin, a milk protein considered to be high in essential amino acids. These fragments, when fused to an active bacterial promoter, which directs the synthesis of chloramphenicol acetyl transferase (CAT), cause bacteria, harboring these modified genes, to take up more lysine as compared to control cells and produce commensurately larger CAT polypeptides. This method of gene synthesis may permit production of polypeptides with a specified amino acid composition to supplement specific diets low in the essential amino acids.

Notes: Summary The data suggest that rats genetically inbred to be hypertensive (SHR) are less able to compensate for hemorrhage and shock than their normotensive controls (WKY). Two reasons for this genetic dysfunction are: 1) SHRs seem to depend more on innervated alpha 1 than noninnervated alpha 2 adrenoreceptors for vasoconstriction; and 2) the vascular smooth muscle hypertrophy noted in SHRs may interfere with effective vasoconstriction.
