Notes: This paper describes reactive flow in permeable media based on a numerical model that assumes local thermodynamic equilibrium. The model simulates single-phase, one-dimensional flow with greater generality than any model in the current literature. The mathematical foundation for the formulation is discussed in some detail. Results for hypothetical examples demonstrate that ion exchange and precipitation/dissolution of solids can interact to produce wave behavior not possible with either phenomenon alone. An important application involving both ion exchange and precipitation/dissolution is alkaline flooding. Model predictions for several laboratory alkaline floods indicate that the assumption of equilibrium is justified for these experiments. Simple calculations based on the equilibrium theory provide estimates of pH loss and hydroxide penetration distance.

Notes: The pipeline mixing of two fluid streams by turbulent jet injection normal to the pipeline has been studied theoretically and experimentally. A simple scaling law for the second moment of the tracer concentration within the pipeline is proposed for the first fifteen pipe diameters down-stream from the injection point. The similarity solution is derived by assuming that the tracer diffuses in a weak compound jet moving parallel to the pipeline axis. The theoretical results are correlated with all of the available experimental measurements. The results indicate that the second moment of the tracer concentration decreases with increasing jet momentum and distance from the injection point such that M = 0.25. (lm/D)-2 (x/D)-4/3.

Notes: The two-scale turbulence concept is recommended for modeling the turbulence in a baffled vessel equipped with a Rushton-type turbine impeller. A three-equation isotropic turbulence model is proposed that employs the balance equations for: the kinetic energy of the large scale vortices; the kinetic energy of the inertial subrange eddies; and the dissipation rate of the small-scale turbulence. The energy transfer rate from the large-scale vortices is prescribed algebraically. Flow patterns are modeled by solving the transport equations for vorticity, stream function, and tangential momentum. The Reynolds stresses are modeled by means of the effective viscosity, based on the three-equation model of turbulence. The calculated profiles of the mean velocity at the tank wall agree with experimental data obtained in the same system by means of a Pitot tube.

Notes: One hundred sets of R-11 two-phase pressure drop and boiling heat transfer data are reported for cocurrent down-flow over an in-line tube bundle. The pressure drop data agree with predicitions using the Diehl correlation. A new heat transfer correlation is reported, accounting for the observed convective and nucleate mechanisms.

Notes: A theory for flow through permeable media with equilibrium precipitation/dissolution interactions is rigorously established. The general solution in terms of waves, which represent the propagation of concentration changes is developed, and the detailed structure of a precipitation/dissolution wave in the presence of dissipation (diffusion and dispersion) is derived; this structure plays a vital role in the general solution. The solution is based on Riemann invariants and thus exhibits certain similarities to wave solutions of related problems in gas dynamics and chromatography. However, a discontinuity peculiar to the precipitation/dissolution problem prevents unification of these similar solutions into a single, more general theory.

Notes: The concept of the trailing vortex introduced by van't Riet and Smith (1975) is used for evaluation of the mean velocity and intensity of periodic velocity fluctuations in the turbine impeller discharge flow. From the analysis of forces acting on the trailing vortex, it follows that geometric similarity in the impeller discharge flow can be expected for the Reynolds number range Re ε 〈1.5 × 104; 9.0 × 104〉 and for the radial distance up to one-tenth of the impeller diameter. The calculated profiles of mean velocity and intensity of periodic velocity fluctuations agree with published data and permit the declaration of boundary conditions for the impeller discharge flow for numerical modeling of turbulent fluid flow in turbine impeller agitated tanks.

Notes: The facilitated transport of CO2 through ion exchange membranes containing organic amine counterions was studied. Steady state CO2 fluxes were measured from pure gas streams and mixtures with CH4. Facilitation factors for CO2 up to 26.7 were calculated from transport data. Transport measurements were binary mixtures of CO2 and CH4 yielded ratios of CO2 flux to CH4 flux ranging from 29.0 to 264. Conversion of flux ratios to permeabilities yielded separation factors up to 551 for CO2 over CH4, which are compared to literature data for polymeric membranes. The transport data support a mobile, reactive-carrier facilitated transport mechanism with a carbamate zwitterion complex. Effective diffusivities for CO2 and the carrier-gas complex were determined from transport data. A reaction equilibrium model predicted facilitation factors that were in very good agreement with experimental values. Potential applications are also discussed.
