    Description: The correlation between lower ionosphere disturbances, geomagnetic variations and radiowave absorption is an important geophysical problem. The correlation is investigated between the electron density profile structure and riometer absorption, and between the absorption and the H-component magnetic field, in order to determine the relation between the (e)-profile parameters and the geomagnetic field variations.

    Description: The results of field measurements of concentration of some gaseous components of the atmosphere along the paths, in Sofia, Bulgaria, using a gas analyzer based on the use of a CO2 laser radiation frequency-doubled with ZnGeP2 monocrystals are presented. The gas analyzer is a traditional long path absorption meter. Radiation from the tunable CO2 laser of low pressure and from an additional He-Ne laser is directed to a colliminating hundredfold Gregori telescope with a 300 mm diameter of the principal mirror. The dimensions of the mirrors of a retroreflector 500 x 500 mm and a receiving telescope allow one to totally intercept the beam passed through the atmospheric layer under study and back.

    Description: The capabilities of the radiometeor method of wind measurement increase with the increase of the transmitted power of radar stations fitted with goniometric systems which enables the observation of shower meteors along with sporadic background. In shower observations the meteor zone reflecting area narrows to the echo surface which is perpendicular to the flux radiant. Favorable conditions are created for singling out atmospheric disturbances in which the wave front is parallel to the echo surface which plays, in this case, the role of a frequency filter. For the first time this technique allowed wave disturbances with periods of approx. greater than 4 min. to be measured, with about a 99 percent probability of exceeding the level of the turbulence noise, during the Geminid and Perseid showers. Maximum values of such wave disturbance amplitudes were about 15 to 20 m/s, with lifetimes up to 2 hrs.

    Description: Research in dynamic processes in the lower thermosphere has been carried out in Kazan using the meteor radar facilities of the Kazan State University under the MAP-GLOBMET international program. Presented is experimental data on seasonal dependences of the wind for anomalous winter circulation periods, spring and autumn reconstructions and stable summer circulation from observations conducted in 1978 to 1984. Prevailing wind parameters are shown: zonal and meridional component amplitudes and A sub 0 and azimuth of the prevailing wind vector. The values are also presented for semidiurnal zonal and meridional tidal components, their correlation coefficient and zonal component amplitude maximum time.

    Description: Stratospheric aerosols collected over the western U.S. from late 1982 to early 1984 show the strong effects of El Chichon's eruption. Although mineral particles disappeared during this period, large acid droplets were still common. Because these have never been seen in prevolcanic, background-level collections, they apparently result from increased droplet growth made possible by the unusual abundance of sulfate. Aerosol size distributions show a wide variety of multimodal curves due to mixing of air masses containing aerosols of various ages or histories. Toward the end of the study time there are fewer large aerosols because of gravitational settling and poleward transport. The result is a steady reduction in sulfate, as most aerosol mass is concentrated in a small number of large droplets. Even the later sulfate levels are, however, five times typical prevolcanic background contents. Thus the influence of El Chichon on high-altitude was still considerable 22 months after eruption.

    Description: As a part of the NASA Global Tropospheric Experiment to study the Amazon boundary layer, ozone and aerosol distributions were made measured in July-August 1985 by a NASA Electra aircraft on several long-range flights spanning different areas between Tabatinga and Belem, Brazil. Both positive and negative correlations were found in PBL between aerosol concentrations and O3 mixing ratios. The negative correlations result from the downward transport of relatively clean O3-rich air from the upper troposphere into PBL (which normally has higher aerosol loading and lower O3 concentrations than troposphere); positive correlations are found in biomass-burning plumes, where the aerosols are emitted into the air and O3 is photochemically produced. It was found that, in the dry season, a significant portion of the ozone over the rain forest is a result of biomass burning and that the distribution of photochemically produced O3 is strongly affected by synoptic-scale transport from large fires to the south/southeast.

    Description: The 1987 Airborne Antarctic Ozone Experiment, in which the NO3, Cl, and SO4 contents of stratospheric aerosols were estimated, is discussed. The aerosol size and chemical composition measurements were carried out on samples collected during August 17 to September 4, 1987. The data indicate that condensed nitrate is found below a threshold temperature of 193.6 + or - 3.0 K, which is generally found at latitudes exceeding 64 deg S. A negative correlation exists between condensed nitrate and ozone correlation.

    Description: The solution to the problem of excitation of longitudinal and transverse electromagnetic waves in randomly inhomogeneous media is reduced to the derivation of a complex effective dielectric constant (EDC) tensor which nonlocally connects together the average macroscopic electromagnetic fields in continuous media, it is implied that the field values which are rapidly fluctuating on a microscopic scale in space and time become smoothed out in a specified way due to the inhomogeneous mixing of diffusion. Proceedings from the derived general expression for the EDC tensor new modes of longitudinal and transverse electromagnetic wave generation due to fluctuation in the parameters of the medium was predicted. In this connection, it is of interest to investigate the peculiarities of electromagnetic longitudinal and transverse wave propagation in such randomly inhomogeneous media where, apart from the charged particle concentration change, the random spatial and temporal changes of natural frequency of closely located oscillators take place.

    Description: The problems concerning the dynamics of populations of the sounded atmospheric gas molecule levels taking into account the nonmonochromatic character of radiation, durations of exciting and sounding pulses, rates of relaxation of excited vibration-rotation states population along different channels in a natural multicomponent mixture of gases and air were investigated. The problems of spectroscopic software, completeness and accuracy of the initial spectroscopic information, information on channels and rates of relaxation from the viewpoint of developing specific schemes of sounding are discussed. The values of deviations of vibration-rotation level populations of some atmospheric molecules from their equilibrium value at simultaneous action of double frequency radiation on the sounding path and the corresponding dynamic variation of lidar return amplitude were estimated. The importance of nonlinear spectrosopic effects in the lidar return value variation at sounding radiation frequency equaling the resonance frequency of vibration-rotation transition in the problem on sounding the humidity profiles and concentrations of gaseous pollutants was also estimated.
