Notes: The objective of the present work is to elucidate the influence of intraparticle mass and heat transfer phenomena on the overall rate and product yields during devolatilization of a single coal particle in an inert atmosphere. To this end a mathematical model has been formulated which covers transient devolatilization kinetics and intraparticle mass and heat transport. Secondary deposition reactions of tarry volatiles also are included. These specific features of the model allow a quantitative assessment to be made of the impact of major process conditions such as the coal particle size, the ambient pressure and the heating rate on the tar, gas and total volatile yield during devolatilization. Model predictions are compared to a limited number of experimental results, both from the present work and from various literature sources.

Notes: The deformation of purely elastic spheres in steady and unsteady elongational flow has been studied. Experiments were carried out in a four roller apparatus (steady elongational flow) and in the time dependent elongational flow of a converging channel. The existing theory which gives a first order approximation of the deformation of elastic spheres is extended to the non-steady elongational flow in the cone. Both in steady and unsteady elongational flow, the theory describes the deformation of the spheres satisfactorily and under certain conditions even for higher deformations than expected.

Notes: Orientation-induced crystallization of crystallizable polymer melts can occur, under certain conditions, during flow through converging channels. Attempts have been made to achieve this phenomenon in a two-phase system, i.e., during simultaneous extrusion of a continuous concentric core of polypropylene within a polystyrene matrix through a conical duct. On one occasion, using Carlona P SY6100 (MFI = 11.0) with Hostyren N2000-V-01 (MFI = 25.0), a highly oriented polypropylene thread with a modulus of 14.6 GPa and a melting point of 178°C was extruded at a die temperature of approximately 170°C and a pressure lower than 40 MPa. It is, in principle, possible to form highly oriented, fiber-like structures as reinforcing elements in a polymer matrix.

Notes: Electronic properties of dopamine were studied by the ab initio STO-3G MO method. The molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) around the aromatic ring and the catechol group remains practically the same in 3,4-dihydroxytoluene (a model compound) and in neutral dopamine examined in its two extended conformations, namely that found in the crystal (side-chain and aromatic ring almost perpendicular) and the one corresponding to 2-amino-6,7-dihydroxytetralin (6,7-ADTN) (side-chain and aromatic ring almost coplanar). In protonated dopamine and in dopamine hydrochloride, the electrostatic potential of the catechol moiety is overshadowed by the positive charge, but the main features remain discernible. The catechol moiety was examined in its two coplanar conformations containing a ‘flip-flop H-bond’. The electrostatic potential around the catechol moiety is quite complex, with alternating positive and negative maxima. At increasing distances above and away from the catechol moiety, only two peripheral maxima, one negative and one positive, remain perceptible. The ‘flip-flop’ mechanism results in an approximate interchange of these two potential maxima, a fact which tends to level out the structural differences between the α- and β-rotamer of dopamine. Based on these results and on the structure of rigid agonists, some pharmacophoric features of dopamine agonists are proposed.
