Notizen: Summary A quantitative ultrastructural study was made of the neuntes forming the deep muscular and circular muscle plexuses of the guinea-pig small intestine following microsurgical lesions designed to interrupt intrinsic and extrinsic nerve pathways within the intestinal wall. Removal of a collar of longitudinal muscle with attached myenteric plexus from the circumference of a segment of small intestine resulted in the subsequent disappearance of 99.3% of neurites in the underlying circular muscle. The few surviving neurites in the deep muscular plexus and circular muscle disappeared completely from lesioned segments that were, in addition, extrinsically denervated surgically. These results indicate that the majority of nerve fibres in the deep muscular and circular muscle plexuses of the guinea-pig small intestine is intrinsic to the intestine and originates from nerve cell bodies located in the overlying myenteric plexus. At the light-microscopic level, nerve bundles were traced from the myenteric plexus to the circular muscle.

Notizen: Traditionally, plant viruses are viewed as harmful, undesirable pathogens. However, their genomes can provide several useful ‘designer functions’ or ‘sequence modules’ with which to tailor future gene vectors for plant or general biotechnology. The majority (77 %) of known plant viruses have single-stranded RNA of the messenger (protein coding) sense as their genetic material. Over the past 4 years, improved in vitro transcription systems and the construction of partial of fulllength DNA copies of several plant RNA viruses have enhanced our ability to manipulate and study their genomes, particularly in the context of their pathogenic interactions with host plants.Recently, two forms of genetically engineered protection against plant virus infections have been reported. In both, a virus-related ‘interfering’ molecule was stably introduced into plants via the DNA-transfer mechanism of Agro-bacterium tumefaciens. To date, the choice of ‘interfering’ molecule has been guided by empirical field-observations and each is effective against only a narrow range of closely-related viruses. As yet, we do not fully understand the molecular mechanism(s) responsible for the observed protection. The ability to manipulate the plant-pathogen relationship is a powerful tool to increase our knowledge and improve future strategies for uncoventional cropprotection by genetic engineering techniques.

Beschreibung: The Uhuru X-ray source 4U1722 + 11 was observed using the microchannel-plate detector (High Resolution Imager) on the Einstein Observatory, and its coordinates measured to a precision of about 5 arcsec. A 16th-magnitude stellar object within the error circle was observed spectroscopically at CTIO, and at the AAT, and found to have a featureless continuum. Subsequent radio observations at the VLA have established that the object is a radio source at the level of 60 mJy, and optical polarization measurements have determined that the source exhibits variable polarization at the level of 10 percent. On the basis of these observations, it is concluded that 4U1722 + 11 is a member of the class of objects known as X-ray selected blazars of BL Lac objects.

Beschreibung: Greenstone sucessions are defined as the nongranitoid component of granitoid-greenstone terrain and are linear to irregular in shape and where linear are termed belts. The chemical composition of greenstones is described. Also discussed are the continental environments of greenstone successions. The effects of contact with granitoids, geophysical properties, recumbent folds and late formation structures upon greenstones are examined. Large stratigraphy thicknesses are explained.

Beschreibung: The approx. 3.5 Ga-old bimodal suite underlying an extensive area in southwestern Swaziland comprises the oldest-dated sialic rocks in the Kaapvaal structural province. The suite consists of leucocratic, layered tonalitic-trondhjemitic gneisses and amphibolites characterized by the effects of repeated high strains. This suite is considered to represent a sialic basement on which metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks, now preserved as scattered greenstone remnants, accumulated. Direct evidence to confirm this temporal relationship is lacking, but structural data from the Dwalile, Assegaai and Commondale areas indicate that (1) the bimodal gneisses experienced a complex structural history prior to the first recognizable deformation in the supracrustal rocks (i.e., D1 in the supracrustals is equivalent to Dn + 1 in the gneisses) and (2) scattered remnants of the Dwalile rocks infolded with the bimodal suite structurally overlie the gneisses and are preserved in synformal keels. Significant proportions of metaquartzites and metapelites are present in the Assegaai greenstone sequence, the presence of which implies the existence of felsic crust in the source area from which these sediments were derived, a conclusion that is consistent with the structural data.

Beschreibung: Direct CCD imaging and long-slit Vidicon spectroscopy have been used to map the emission-line ratios, profiles, and velocity fields over the extended narrow-line regions in three nearby Seyfert galaxies, NGC 2110, NGC 5506, and MCG -5-23-16. The gas in the letter is spatially unresolved. Similarities between the other two nebulae include the excitation mechanism (photoionization by a central nonthermal source) and the overall profiles of the very broad emission lines close to the nucleus. The nebulae are, however, quite different in their global kinematic behavior. In NGC 2110, the gas appears to lie in a disk or flattened spheroid and to be in ordered rotation, with a classical rotation curve, about an axis parallel to the minor axis of the stellar isophotes. The velocity field of NGC 5506 is quite irregular, but a component of rotation in the plane of the galaxy seems to exist.

Beschreibung: The imaging proportional counter on the Einstein Observatory has been used to search for X-ray emission from 13 nearby E and S0 galaxies with compact nuclear radio sources. Five galaxies with X-ray luminosity of about 10 to the 41st ergs/s were detected, and one of them was resolved. These galaxies and a few similar ones observed by others are compared to a sample of radio-quiet E and S0 galaxies. The radio-emitting galaxies have consistently greater X-ray luminosities per unit of optical luminosity than most radio-quiet galaxies. Possible emission mechanisms and models for the resolved source, for the most powerful source, and for the class of E/S0 galaxies with active nuclei are discussed.

Beschreibung: Kinematic and imaging observations of NGC 2110 are reported and it is found that the interstellar gas is orbiting with projected rotation axis parallel to the minor axis of the stellar light. The rotation curve is steep close to the center and flat farther out. However, the nucleus is displaced by about 220 pc from the apparent mass center of the galaxy. This last result is discussed in terms of models invoking differential obscuration of stars and gas, non-Keplerian motion of the gas, or a large mass of unseen material which dominates the rotation curve.

Beschreibung: Emission in the 115 GHz 1-0 line of CO has been detected in 18 Seyfert galaxies in a sample of 43. The CO properties of 29 Seyferts in the Revised Shapley Ames Catalog (RSA) are compared with the CO properties of normal galaxies of the same Hubble type. These RSA type 2 Seyferts have an average ratio of CO-to-blue luminosity that is about twice as large as that of the normal galaxies, but the RSA type 1 Seyferts have normal CO luminosities. The RSA type 2 Seyfert galaxies have an unusually large average ratio of CO luminosity-to-H I mass compared to normal disk galaxies. The RSA type 2 Seyferts have an average far-IR luminosity that is about four times larger than a non-Seyfert comparison sample, while the RSA type 1 Seyferts are not significantly more luminous than the non-Seyferts. The result imply that the two classes of Seyferts are intrinsically different from one another and that one class cannot evolve into another in less than a few million years.

Beschreibung: It is found that NGC 5548 contains a spatially extended high-excitation narrow-line region with line widths ranging between 500 and 100 km/s (FWHM). This nebulosity is elongated along the axis of the triple radio source. The peak of optical continuum light (nucleus) coincides with the peak of the forbidden O III 5007 A distribution.
