    Description: The unidentified infrared (UIR) features are a group of emission bands observed in a variety of objects, which can be characterized as having moderate density gas (densities from 1000 to 1,000,000/cu.cm.) and a nearby ultraviolet source. The origin of the features is still uncertain, but the current evidence points to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) as the source of the UIR features. Problems with identifying PAHs as the source of the UIR features are discussed.

    Description: Composition and flow parameter of cold heavy ions from the PICCA instrument on Giotto within a cometocentric distance of 50,000 km are presented. A distinct boundary at about 27,000 km, where the flow parameters changed abruptly, is identified and its physical significance is discussed. Radial profiles of heavy ion groups and abundance ratios are given.

    Description: The angular distribution and local concentration of interstellar Al-26 are calculated for five theoretical models of its origin, as a guide for future observations. The models considered relate Al-26 to current star formation (with surface CO density as its indicator), treat Al-26 as a secondary-nucleosynthesis product on seed nuclei with the same metallicity gradient as O, assume the Al-26 ejection rate is proportional to present light output, make Al-26 synthesis depend on total H I + H2 gas density, or assume that Al-26 is formed mainly in novae. The local decay and production rates for the five models are found to lie within a factor of 2 of surface density 0.0003/sq cm s, corresponding to a present (Al-26)/(Al-27) ratio of 5 x 10 to the -6th averaged over H I and H2 phases.

    Description: A description of the ER-2 lidar data characteristics and available products, plus flight times and locations is presented for the FIRE cirrus experiment of October 13 through November 2, 1986. The CALS airborne lidar was flown for this experiment on the NASA ER-2 high altitude aircraft. The primary objectives of the CALS observations were to intensively measure cirrus cloud top height and structure for basic cirrus studies and for validation of satellite cloud retrievals.

    Description: The detection of the acetylene derivative propynal in the cold cloud TMC-1, with an abundance that is very close to that for the related species tricarbon monoxide, is reported. Propadienone, an isomer of propynal, was not detected and is hence less abundant than either C3O or HC2CHO.

    Description: The nearby radio galaxy M87 (Virgo A) is studied with the Einstein X-ray Observatory and the VLA to investigate possible inverse Compton X-ray emission from the 'radio halo'. An asymmetrical X-ray structure is superposed on the dominant symmetrical emission due to the hot interstellar gas, consisting of broad ridges extending about 0.5-5 arcmin E and SW of the nucleus. The radio halo also has prominent structures to the E and SW, probably due to bent jets seen in projection. But comparison of the X-ray and radio maps show the features are not entirely coincident. An inverse Compton origin of the X-ray emission implies the magnetic field of the halo varies between 3 and 8 times below equipartition levels of 2-5 microG. The principal alternative explanation for the asymmetrical X-ray component is that the outflowing jets compress the interstellar medium, causing a local enhancement of thermal X-ray emission.

    Description: Results are reported from a search to determine the correlation, if any, between the temporal behaviors of 0.2-7 MeV or higher electrons at GEO (6.6 earth radii) and 6-10 MeV electrons in the interplanetary region near earth at the period of the Jovian synodic year (about 13 months). The 13-month intensity variation results from the synodic interplanetary magnetic field conection of earth to Jupiter. Direct compariosn of intensity-time flux profiles for the years 1976-1984, about 7 synodic Jovian electron seasons, shows that the intensity envelope of peak electron flux at GEO does not appear to be correlated to the observed 13 month intensity envelope of relativistic electron flux in the interplanetary region near earth. A persistent 13-month variation of GEO flux is not obvious, thus indicating that the intensity of electron flux at GEO is not directly and soley related to the intensity of Jovian electron flux near earth. It is concluded that dynamic erergization and redistribution processes in earth's magnetosphere must be invoked to produce the intensity variations of relativistic electron flux at GEO and not interplanetary magnetic field connection to Jupiter.

    Description: The identification of a fifth serendipitous Einstein source with a new BL Lac object in a very luminous galaxy is reported. The resolved component is well fitted by an exponential disk with scale length 18 kpc and absolute magnitude of roughly -24.2. A redshift of 0.237 is derived from stellar absorption features. No emission lines are seen in the 3200-9000 A wavelength range. Decomposition of the optical spectrum into a standard galaxy plus a power law yields a spectral index of 0.5 + or - 0.5, significantly flatter than in the average BL Lac object. Linear polarization of the nonstellar component is about 6 percent in the 4500-7000 A wavelength range. The X-ray flux in the 0.3-3.5 keV band is 1.16 x 10 to the -11th ergs/sq cm/s, corresponding to a luminosity of 3.5 x 10 to the 45th ergs/s . The radio flux density is 85.6 mJy at 20 cm and 54.5 mJy at 6 cm.

    Description: The Einstein Observatory and the VLA were used to scan the radio halo of the galaxy M87 to detect the presence, if any, of inverse Compton X-ray (ICX) emissions. The scans revealed a coincidence of an asymmetrical X-ray structure with a luminosity near 4 x 10 to the 41st ergs/sec and dominant symmetrical emission from the hot interstellar gas. The emission can be attributed to ICX if the magnetic field of the proposed halo varies between 3-8 times below equipartition levels of 2-5 micro-gauss, which would imply that the confinement is produced by an outside medium. The necessary characteristics of the confining mechanism are discussed.

    Description: X-ray spectroscopic observations obtained with the Einstein objective grating spectrometer (OGS) and monitor proportional counter (MPC) instruments of three Galactic bulge sources, the globular cluster burst source 1820-30, the burster Serpens X-1, and the GX 9+9 are presented. Joint spectral fits to the OGS and MPC data are consistent for all three sources with either a thermal bremsstrahlung model with temperature ranging from 6 to 10 keV or with a two-component blackbody model, where one component may be associated with the neutron star and one with the accretion disk. The spectra of Serpens X-1 and 1820-30 harden with increases in intensity. The implications of the results for recent models of low-mass X-ray binaries are discussed.
