Abstract Diurnal sampling of a transect across a shallow, eutrophic gravel pit suggested that a diurnal horizontal migration was present in Daphnia hyalina lacustris, in which it remained in the littoral zone during the day and moved out into the open water at night. The avoidance of fish predation seemed the most likely ultimate cause of this migration.
