Notes: Abstract Crystals of this calabash curare alkaloid, space groupP21; havea=12.695(4), Å,b=7.424(2) Å,c=21.762(6) Å,β=98.03(5)°,Z=2,F(000)=884. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by least squares toR=0.10. The alkaloid cation, with two-fold molecular symmetry, has a highly fused ring system and is structurally rigid. This determination provides accurate stereochemical parameters for those atoms and groups (N+ centers, aromatic rings, and hydrogen bond acceptors) postulated by various theories as involved in binding to the acetylcholine receptor. In the crystal, layers of alkaloid cations parallel to thebc plane alternate with layers containing two Cl− ions and eight water molecules distributed almost randomly over ten sites. Electrostatic attractions between N+ and Cl− bind the alternating layers together. Each one of the ten sites is, on average, 4.60 Å from one or two N+, allowing the two Cl− ions to be disordered. Binding interactions within the alkaloid layers are solely van der Waals attractions. Within each H2O/C1− layer there is a complex hydrogen bond system, including four infinite spirals parallel to theb axis, with an average bonding distance of 2.94 Å. There are no hydrogen bonds between layers. The possible relevance to the activity of the alkaloid of its ability to organize large amounts of water is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The problem of approximating a surface normal by linear interpolation across a surface facet is considered from a geometric point of view. This point of view makes the coordinate independence for triangular facets particularly easy to see, and provides some insight into the problem of non-uniqueness for the non-triangular case.

Notes: Abstract The theoretical force-free magnetic fields in the first paper of this series, modeling magnetic configurations associated with polarity intrusion in active regions, are established to be all stable to linear ideal hydromagnetic perturbations under the boundary condition that anchors the lines of force rigidly to the photosphere. It is shown first that these force-free fields belong to an even larger class found by Chang and Carovillano (1981). A proof by the energy principle is then given to establish that all force-free magnetic fields in the larger class are absolutely stable. The physical implications of this result are discussed.

Notes: Abstract This article describes recent developments in the theoretical investigation of magnetostatic equilibrium in the presence of gravity, nonequilibrium in hydromagnetics, and classical problems in hydromagnetic stability. The construction of magnetostatic equilibria has progressed beyond geometrically idealized systems, such as the axisymmetric system, to fully three-dimensional systems capable of modelling realistic solar structures. Nonequilibrium in a magnetic field with an arbitrary interweaving of lines of force due to random footpoint motion is a novel and subtle property with important implications for the solar atmosphere. Work begun by Parker and subsequent developments are described. To the extent quasi-static solar structures are approximated by stable equilibrium, ideal hydromagnetic stability theory provides a first insight into how stability is achieved in the solar environment. A qualitative physical picture based on recent stability analyses is given. The article places emphasis on understanding basic principles and issues rather than detailed results which can be found in the published literature.

Notes: Abstract The wedge problem, that is, the propagation of radiation or particles in the presence of a wedge, is examined in different contexts. Generally, the paper follows the historical order from Sommerfeld's early work to recent stochastic results—hindsights and new results being woven in as appropriate. In each context, identifying the relevant mathematical problem has been the key to the solution. Thus each section can be given both a physics and a mathematics title: Section 2: diffraction by reflecting wedge; boundary value problem of differential equations; solutions defined on mutiply connected spaces. Section 3: geometrical theory of diffraction; identificiation of function spaces. Section 4: path integral solutions; path integration on multiply connected spaces; asymptotics on the boundaries of function spaces. Section 5: probing the shape of the wedge and the roughness of its surface; stochastic calculus. Several propagators and Green functions are given explicitly, some old ones and some new ones. They include the knife-edge propagator for Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, the absorbing knife edge propagator, the wedge propagators, the propagator for a free particle on a μ-sheeted Riemann surface, the Dirichlet and the Neumann wedge Green function.

Notes: Summary Leukocyte and skin cultures of a female hybrid between a donkey and Grevy zebra show a diploid chromosome complement of 48. From this finding it is inferred that the Grevy zebra is characterized by 2n=34 and that such hybrid's regular infertility is analogous to that of mules and hinnies. Barr bodies were present in the tissue-cultured cells and studies with tritiated thymidine show that Barr body and the chromosome set replicate asynchronously. One large element corresponds to the late replicating X of other species and often possesses the morphologic features of a donkey X. At other times it is decidedly more metacentric, a quality tentatively assigned to the Grevy zebra X. Not enough cells could be studied to determine whether random or selective late replication (? inactivation) of one or the other of the sex chromosomes takes place. It is suggested that the study of such hybrids may yield cytologic information concerning the lyon hypothesis.
