    Description: The NASA Launch Processing System (LPS) to which attention is presently given has arrived at satisfactory solutions for the distributed-computing, good user interface and dissimilar-hardware interface, and automation-related problems that emerge in the specific arena of spacecraft launch preparations. An aggressive effort was made to apply the lessons learned in the 1960s, during the first attempts at automatic launch vehicle checkout, to the LPS. As the Space Shuttle System continues to evolve, the primary contributor to safety and reliability will be the LPS.

    Description: Two rapidly developing extratropical maritime cyclones (one, developed during January 13-15, 1979, along an intense frontal zone south of Japan, the other, of January 26-27, 1979, in a polar mass over the North Atlantic) were investigated using the FGGE data and ECMWF level IIIb analyses to describe the structure and dynamics of these events. Although the cyclones evolved from a strong low-level baroclinic zone without initial large midtropospheric vorticity advection, thus resembling the Petterssen type A development, rapid deepening occurred in both cases when an approaching upper tropospheric jet with appreciable shear vorticity advection became favorably superposed over the surface low. During the development period, stability decreased in the low troposphere, aiding in the rapid development of an intense mass-circulation and low tropospheric vorticity production by the divergence term. The results suggest that upper-level forcing plays a greater role in the initiation of explosive oceanic development than is suggested by the Petterssen and Smebye (1971) description.

    Description: This study evaluates the potential of measuring/mapping forest damage in spruce-fir forests in the Green Mountains of Vermont and White Mountains of New Hampshire using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) data. The TM 1.65/0.83-micron (TM5/4) and 2.22/0.83-micron (TM7/4) band ratios were found to correlate well with ground-based measurements of forest damage (a measure of percentage foliar loss) at 11 spruce-fir stands located on Camels Hump, a mountain in northern Vermont. Images using 0.56 and 1.65-micron bands with 1.65/0.83-micron band ratios indicated locations of heavy conifer forest damage. Both 1.65/0.83 and 2.22/0.83-micron band ratios were used to quantify levels of conifer forest damage among individual mountains throughout many of the Green and White Mountains. Damage was found to be consistently higher for the Green than the White Mountains.

    Description: The Hale telescope has employed an astronomical camera using four 800x800 CCDs in an optical arrangement that allows the imaging of a contiguous 1600-pixel-square region of the sky; reimaging optics are then used to yield a scale of 0.33 arcsec/pixel. Optical coatings are incorporated to yield a throughput at peak efficiency of nearly 50 percent, including telescope losses. This camera can be used in a scanning mode, in which the telescope tracking rate is offset and the charge is clocked in the chips in such a way that the charge image remains aligned with the optical image. Attention is given to the results of a survey for high-redshift quasars using this equipment, which has produced images for the most distant galaxy clusters yet discovered.

    Description: A NASA laboratory for evaluating linear detector arrays for remote sensing applications from the visible to shortwave infrared is described. Nominal requirements are presented on the critical parameters of signal-to-noise ratio, modulation transfer function, response linearity, dynamic range, and detector-to-detector response uniformity. Results of tests on a custom developed multi-spectral linear array from RCA and two commercial arrays from Texas Instruments and Reticon for the visible and near-infrared are presented. The custom array was clearly superior in signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range to its off-the-shelf counterparts. Allthe arrays were found to have somewhat less than desirable modulation transfer functions, but excellent response linearity.

    Description: The Rotorcraft Dynamics Analysis was used to predict the aeroelastic responses of a representative X-Wing model with a 10-ft diameter rotor. The aeroelastic methodology used and the tests and assumptions involved are reviewed. Results are reported on the findings concerning control power and higher harmonic control in hover, transition flight, vibratory loads at forward speed, and responses in conversion. It is concluded that the analysis can give satisfactory predictions of X-Wing behavior.

    Description: The dynamics of the Hyades open star cluster is investigated analytically on the basis of the photoelectric radial velocities reported by Griffin et al. (1988). The methods used to determine the radial-velocity gradient, convergent point, and distance modulus are described, and the results are presented in tables and graphs and characterized in detail. Findings reported include convergent-point alpha = 98.2 + or - 1.1 deg and delta = 6.1 + or - 1.0 deg, space motion 48.0 + or - 0.27 km/s, distance to cluster center 45.4 + or - 2.1 pc, distance modulus 3.28 + or - 0.10, and cluster velocity dispersion 230 m/s.

    Description: The Particle Measuring Systems (PMS) Forwared Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP-100) which was flown on the ER-2 during the Airborne Antarctic Ozone Experiment for the measurement of particles in polar stratospheric clouds has been evaluated and calibrated. The sample volume of the probe per 10-s sampling period increases from 257 cu cm for 1-micron particles to 412 for 15-micron particles, but there is substantial uncertainty in this value. Limitations in the measurements from this instrument and possible corrections are discussed. The uncertainty in the total particle mass measured by the probe may be as large as + or - 100 percent. Recommendations are given for the processing of data from the FSSP used in this project.
