Notes: Abstract An eigenexpansion solution of the time-independent Brownian motion Fokker-Planck equation is given for a situation in which the external acceleration is a step function. The solution describes the heavy-species velocity distribution function in a binary mixture undergoing a shock wave, in the limit of high dilution of the heavy species and negligible width of the light-gas internal shock. The diffusion solution is part of the eigenexpansion. The coefficients of the series of eigenfunctions are obtained analytically with transcendentally small errors of order exp(−1/M), whereM ≪ 1 is the mass ratio. Comparison is made with results from a hypersonic approximation.

Notes: Abstract Coexisting feldspars from across 2,000 km2 of the granulite facies Oaxacan Complex, southern Mexico exhibit variable amounts of solid solution from nearly binary (Ab-An and Ab-Or) to substantially ternary (Ab-An-Or). Reintegrated analyses of 21 coarsely exsolved perthite (AF)-plagioclase (PL) pairs yield AF=Or30–63 Ab30–56An2–15 and PL=Or1–2Ab70–84An11–28. These data have been used to test existing two feldspar geothermometers for this extended composition range. For all compositions, temperature estimates show relatively little spread in value (660° to 795° C, 7 kbar) using the Haselton et al. (1983) calibration (HHHR). These temperatures are in fair agreement with estimates of 750±40° C for feldspar pairs with nearly binary compositions using the Stormer (1975) thermometer (STO). However, STO temperatures increase significantly (to 990° C) with increasing ternary solid solution in AF, suggesting that thermometers derived for binary systems are inaccurate for ternary compositions. Isotherms drawn from HHHR which take into account variable anorthite solution in alkali feldspar show that estimated temperature decreased by 50–100° C for each 5 mole percent anorthite in alkali feldspar. Experimentally determined solvus relations (Seck 1971) require feldspars with significant ternary solid solution to have crystallized or to have equilibrated at higher temperature than feldspars with more binary compositions. However, petrographic and field relations of ternary and binary feldspars in the Oaxacan Complex suggest they were all equilibrated at similar metamorphic pressures and temperatures and do not support a model where ternary feldspars have preserved higher premetamorphic temperatures. The composition of coexisting feldspars from other Precambrian granulite-facies terranes are also inconsistent with Seck's (1971) results. Hence, thermometers which fit Seck's solvus relations may not yield accurate temperatures in high grade metamorphic terranes. Parallel tie-lines for ternary and binary feldspars in the Oaxacan Complex and the consistency of inferred temperatures (HHHR) for many granulite terranes suggest that estimation of temperature using tie-line slopes rather than solvus width may yield more accurate results for these samples. Peak metamorphic conditions in the Oaxacan Complex are inferred to have been 730±50° C, 7±1 kbar. Pressure estimates from four garnet-plagioclase barometers show good agreement. Results of feldspar thermometry are consistent with diopside-forsterite equilibria in marbles which restrict T=720–765° C at P=7 kbar.

Notes: Abstract The understanding of glass forming ability requires quantitative information on the stable and metastable phase equilibria of binary and multicomponent systems, particularly as a function of composition and temperature. This paper discusses the success of the use of Gibbs free energy curves for the supercooled liquid relative to the stable crystalline phases to describe glass forming ability. Applications are reported for the systems GeSe2-Se, Sb2Se3-Se and GeSe2-Sb2Se3 for which experimental minimal quenching rates are available. A strongly associated regular solution model for the liquid phase gives a predicted behaviour consistent with experimental data. The method is intended to apply to glass forming liquids both in equilibrium with a solid and in a supercooled state.

Notes: Summary By means of the freeze-fracture technique and in tracer studies it is demonstrated that the structure of tight junctions and the permeability to lanthanum of the guinea-pig cecal epithelium change during maturation of cells. Height and strand number of tight junctions in the apical-basal direction increase as crypt cells migrate to the surface of the epithelium. Likewise, the interlacing of continuous strands was greater in surface than in crypt junctions. The numerous free-ends, isolated individual freestrands and maculae occludentes found in crypt cells were absent in surface epithelial cells. Goblet cells, located at the bottom of crypts, displayed tight junctions similar in characteristics to those of cells located in the middle region of crypts. Cells at the surface and in middle regions of crypts possess tight junctions impermeable to lanthanum, whereas junctions between cells located at the bottom of crypts often were permeable to the tracer, indicating that permeability decreases as the epithelial cells mature. Genesis and maturation mechanisms related to structural configuration of tight junctions are discussed.

Notes: Summary Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the cecum of the guinea-pig is colonized by numerous spiral-shaped bacteria; these microorganisms, which adhere to mucosa at one end, were found exclusively on the brush border of the surface epithelium. The membranes of sectioned bacteria have a set of electron-dense bands girdling the tip adhered to epithelium. Freeze-fracture replicas of the bacteria revealed the prokaryote-eukaryote junction as a set of ridges on the P-face of outer membrane; the numerous particles of E-face were arranged in parallel rows; on the other hand, the apical plasma membrane and subjacent cytoplasm of epithelium occupied by the spiral-shaped bacteria did not show a structural counterpart. Observations suggest that one end of the spiral-shaped bacteria possesses specialized membrane components that permit specific attachment to the apical surface of epithelial cells.

Notes: Abstract For the alloy of eutectic composition in the quasibinary GeSe2-Sb2Se3 system the heat capacities of the glass, undercooled and stable liquid and crystalline phases have been measured using differential scanning calorimetry. Enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy differences of vitreous and crystalline forms have been deduced for this alloy. The kinetic parameters of crystallization for glasses of nearby composition have been obtained by continuous heating experiments. The effective activation energy obtained has a value that accounts for the activation energy for nucleation calculated using simple nucleation theory formulae.

Notes: Abstract Concepts of higher-order differentiation of functions and jet fields, of vector fields, and of covecter fields are introduced. These concepts, which generalize those of successive differentiation (ordinary or covariant), are shown to correspond to certain important types of derivative strings.

Notes: Abstract We present a two-fold approach for strongly inhomogeneous plasmas for which the Chapman-Enskog asymptotic expansion breaks down: First, a heuristic one: we solve the kinetic equation by an iterative algorithm, and obtain a non-local response to the local gradients of the local maxwellian distribution function. The other approach consists in resummation methods of the Chapman-Enskog expansion for the distribution function or for its velocity moments: we use Padé or Borel-Padé approximants, and obtain with the simplest ones delocalization formulas similar to those obtained by using the iterative algorithm. These formulas are of great potential use in any situation where strong temperature gradients occur (laser plasma interaction, stellar winds, cloud evaporation).
