Notes: Water-insoluble polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) were prepared by mixing methyl glycol chitosan (MGC, 1) and [2-(diethylamino)ethyl]dextran (EA, 2) with poly(potassium vinyl sulfate) (PVSK, 3) in aqueous solution at various hydrogen ion concentrations. Elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, and solubilities of PEC reveal that PEC differ in molecular structure and properties according to pH. It seems that the degree of dissociation and the conformation of MGC, EA, and PVSK change with pH. PEC membranes were made by casting from solutions of all kinds of PEC, and transport phenomena through the membrane of PEC prepared in 4 wt.-% HCl solution were investigated under various conditions. The driving force of the transport depends on the membrance potential, Donnan potential, and diffusion potential, according to measurements of the transport ratio of Na+ and the electric potential difference between the left- and right-hand side of the membrane. Moreover, the permeability of K+ is higher than that of Na+.

Notes: Summary Smooth muscle from small segments of the vas deferens, urinary bladder and the ureter of the guinea pig was transplanted into the anterior chamber of the eye. Some muscle cells had a normal appearance, but others showed morphological changes during the first few days following transplantation. Changes of two main kinds were observed: some cells contained aggregations of glycogen granules and lipid droplets; other cells were characterized by either a general increase in electron density of the cell with the presence of very thick filaments (which are, possibly, aggregates of thin filaments), or cells containing an electron-dense nucleus, ruptured cellular membranous systems and degenerating mitochondria. Following revascularisation, which commenced one to two days after transplantation, areas containing cells with an appearance similar to that of embryonic smooth muscle were apparent. Evidence of mitosis of smooth-muscle and other cell types was also noted, the most active period being five to ten days after transplantation. Bundles containing normal muscle cells were apparent by four weeks in these transplants. However, whole undissected transplants contained normal-looking muscle bundles after one week. These findings are discussed in relation to the repair of wounds to smooth muscle.

Notes: Summary Smooth muscle cells of the guinea-pig sphincter pupillae were fixed in the presence of 3% lanthanum nitrate. Although only small amounts of lanthanum were found in plasmalemmal vesicles, large deposits were present within a membrane system resembling sarcoplasmic reticulum. The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to the use of lanthanum nitrate as an extracellular tracer.

Notes: Summary This paper discusses the possibility that fenestrated capillaries may be induced by the presence or action of epithelial cells. Fenestrations were shown to exist in a number of capillaries in close proximity to the epithelium in the in situ guinea-pig vas deferens and ureter. These results suggest further roles for the vas deferens and ureter than those previously conceived. Transplants of these tissues in the anterior eye chamber were, by two weeks, highly vascularized. Those transplants containing epithelium showed fenestrated capillaries in close proximity to these cells. However, in transplants which did not contain epithelial cells, no fenestrations were noted in capillaries.

Notes: Summary The present study deals with the localization and development of S-100 protein-like immunoreactivity in the retina, ciliary body and iris of human fetuses. In the retina, numerous astrocytes, densely distributed in the nerve-fiber layer and ganglion-cell layer, were stained strongly with the S-100 antiserum. The first immunoreactive astrocytes occurred at the posterior pole of the retina and spread gradually outward and toward the ora serrata with increasing age. Müller cells were not immunoreactive for S-100 during development, except in the retina of the latest fetus examined. S-100 immunoreactivity was also found in the nonpigmented ciliary epithelium and posterior epithelium of the iris, both of which are developed from the inner wall of the optic cup. On the other hand, the pigmented epithelium extending from retina to iris, derived from the outer layer of the optic cup, was free of S-100 immunoreactivity.

Description / Table of Contents: Charge transfer complexes of the type [ML2]2-[RV]2+ are prepared from viologens (RV2+) and dianionic metal dithiolenes ([ML2]2-; M=Zn, Cd, Hg; L=a substituted 1,2-ethenedithiolate). The solid state structure consists of separated pseudocolumns of tetrahedral metal dithiolenes and twisted viologens. While there is no evidence for short contacts within a column, an intercolumnar interaction is indicated by Zn-H and S-H distances of 3.27 and 2.87 Å, respectively. UV-VIS spectra exhibit an ion pair charge transfer band in the range of 460-660 nm (∊=400-1900). Its location is predominatly determined by the nature of the ethenedithiolate ligand inducing shifts of 70-200 nm while the metal has only a weak influence. Formation constants of the 1:1 ion pairs are in the range of 100-600 1 mol-1. Spectrophotometric analysis reveals the presence of further adducts with different composition.

Notes: A rhodium complex was anchored upon three types of phosphinated polystyrene which were crosslinked with divinylbenzene or ethylene dimethacrylate. Glass transitions were separately observed for the flexible polymer supports and their polymer-anchored rhodium complex catalysts using differential scanning calorimetry. Discontinuous activity drops in the Arrhenius plot for the ethylene hydrogenation reaction were observed for these flexibe polymer catalysts, while, for the rhodium complex anchored on a highly crosslinked rigid polymer, neither glass transition nor such a discontinuity in the catalytic activity could be detected. This reversible activity drop is discussed in terms of changes in the stability and the coordination state of the ethylene complex influenced by the micro-Brownian motion of the polymer network.

Notes: Three active p-aminobenzenesulfonic acid derivatives, 1-(p-aminobenzenesulfonyl)imidazole (4a), 1-(p-aminobenzenesulfonyloxy)benzotriazole (4b), and 2-phenyl-4-(p-aminobenzenesulfonyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazoline-5-thione (4c) were synthesized by reacting p-isocyanatobenzenesulfonyl chloride (1) with stoichiometrical quantities of water in the presence of dibutyltin didodecanoate and subsequently with imidazole, 1-hydroxybenzotriazole and 2-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazoline-5-thione, respectively. The self-polycondensation of 4a-c, leading to poly(p-benzenesulfonamide) (7), was carried out in solution using polar aprotic solvents, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and hexamethylphosphoric triamide (HMPA), and acidic media, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and m-cresol, with or without an appropriate acid catalyst or acid acceptor under mild conditions. Poly(p-benzenesulfonamide) having the highest reduced viscosity of 0,14 dl·-1 was obtained almost quantitatively from 4c by using m-cresol as a solvent without any acid catalyst and acid acceptor at 25°C. The polymers are soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as NMP, HMPA and DMSO and in aqueous sodium hydroxide. These poly(p-benzenesulfonamide)s are less thermally stable than completely aromatic polyamides, because the initial weight-loss started at 250-350°C. Aminolysis of three benzenesulfonic acid derivatives, 1-benzenesulfonylimidazole (5a), 1-benzenesulfonyloxybenzotriazole (5b), and 2-phenyl-4-benzenesulfonyl-1,3,4-oxadiazoline-5-thione (5c), with the same leaving groups was also carried out as a model reaction of self-polycondensation to determine the reaction conditions.
