Notes: Abstract Equations are derived which generalize the Laplace-Kelvin laws of force and chemical potential balance for a curved interface between a solid and its melt. The main difference from previous treatments are strain corrections in the equation of melting equilibrium, for which a simple physical picture is developed. These corrections are usually small, but they are essential in order to achieve an internally consistent formulation. When applied to sound transmission at the solid-superfluid interface of4He, they guarantee energy conservation thereby answering a paradox raised by Maris.

Notes: Summary An energy transfer between donor and acceptor fluorophores across single lipid bilayer membranes is demonstrated. Anilino-naphthalene sulfonate is used as the donor chromophore: its fluorescence is enhanced by the presence of lipid and thus indicates association with the purely lipid membranes of our preparation of vesicles in suspension. Light emit ted by the donor molecules excites fluorescence of acriflavine, a suitable acceptor enclosed inside the vesicles. Absorption and fluorescence spectra of this system, in its components and as a whole, are presented in evidence for an energy transfer.

Notes: Summary The mathematical formulation of three classes of theories concerning the problem outlined in the title of this study was critically assessed and experimentally evaluated. It was found that only one class of the theories describes the relation between the distribution of particles in a volume element to that observed in sections through this volume in a satisfactory way. The errors in the remaining two classes could be traced and the corrections made after a mathematically rigorous analysis brought these theories to comply with a model which, as we could prove experimentally, deserves a high level of confidence.

Notes: Summary Vesicles bounded by single lipid bilayer membranes (outside diameter 350 to 400 Å) can be made to enclose aqueous solutions of a variety of compounds. The procedure to prepare such vesicles in suspension is demonstrated with solutions of acetylcholine (ACh) in different concentrations as ‘inside’ media. Several points are submitted as proof that the vesicles can contain a particular compound not present in the ‘outside’ aqueous solution.

Notes: Summary The conditions are described which lead to the formation of small spherical vesicles bounded by singlelipid membranes. These membranes appear as triple-layered structures in electron micrographs and thus resemble theunit membrane configuration of cellular boundaries. The theory of light scattering by spherical shells is found applicable to the vesicles described here; size determinations by electron microscopy (r=195 Å) and by light scattering (r=225 Å) give reasonably close values. The refractive index of the membranes as determined by differential refractometry is found to be 1.46 for green incident light of wavelength 5461 Å.

Notes: Abstract A field study was conducted on freshly reclaimed surface-mined area to determine response of sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata [Dumont] G. Don.) to delayed rhizobial inoculation. Soybeans (Glycine max L.) were used as a control legume. Plots were inoculated with spray applications of rhizobial suspensions at seeding, cotyledon stage or second trifoliate leaf stage, or not inoculated. Starter N at 0, 10 or 20 kg ha−1 was applied preplant in a factorial arrangement with inoculation timings.G. max. was grown for 92 days andL. cuneata for 121 days. Starter N increased plant growth and total shoot N in both species. However, % shoot N was found to increase only inL. cuneata. Delaying inoculation had no significant effect upon total shoot N or % shoot N accumulation inL. cuneata. Inoculation ofG. max at planting produced greater plant growth and N accumulation than delayed inoculation treatments. Application of inoculum as a surface spray appeared to be an effective method for delayed inoculation as evidenced by nodule formation. Lack of increased plant growth, regardless of time of inoculation, suggests that delayed inoculation does not improve establishment and growth ofL. cuneata in minesoil.

Notes: Abstract The Coulomb gas of massless fermions (Schwinger model) is solved in a one-dimensional space of finite lengthL using the boson representation of fermions. Special attention is paid to boundary effects and global degrees of freedom. It is shown that the mean current is not conserved, but oscillates. The theory is constructed in all charge sectors. The Wightman functions are calculated and the limitL→∞ is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Thermodynamic properties of inhomogeneous one dimensional classical systems with nearest neighbor interactions are considered. In particular the partition function of a system of hard core particles with a zero range attractive interaction is determined in the presence of an arbitrary external potential. Different concepts of a local pressure are developed and compared with each other.

Notes: Abstract A general thermodynamics of surfaces between elastic media is developed which extends an earlier treatment by Andreev and Kosevich to embody the Gibbsian description of fluid-fluid interfaces. Complementary to the well known surface stress the concept of surface strain is introduced. The thermodynamic variables of the surface energy and the corresponding Gibbs-Duhem- and Maxwell-relations are investigated. We study two examples in detail:a) a surface between solids that cannot transform into each other, andb) an interface between a solid and its melt. In the latter case we show that the surface tension only depends on the tangential strain.
